K, I just finished this anime, and I was blown away by it. It was way better than a lot of the shounen animes I've seen recently, so that bumped it up in my book.
The thing I liked the most about it weres the Kazuki/Tokiko interactions and love story. It was a refreshing change from either a wimpy male lead and strong female lead, or strong male lead and /barf quiet female lead (see SEED, Tengen Toppa Gurren Larann, Vandread, etc etc). They were both very strong characters (though obviously with a soft side), and did well in fights. I personally LOVED the ending. Honestly, like EVERY single other anime has the "final battle" end halfway through the final episode, then you get 10 minutes of falling action/happiness, and it's over. BR's heavy action basically ended in episode 24, which I thought was amazingly unique. To have 1.5-2 full episodes of "after" time (well not really cause of how it turned out, but close enough) really shows class on the writers' parts. There aren't many writers with the balls to end the "action" more than 10 minutes before the show's over. The scar touching thing had me laughing in the final credits, another unique sequence that puts this series above the rest. I laughed a lot in different parts of this series, even in episode 1 (that's what hooked me really), and that's rare. I don't laugh easy, especially at the "jokes" in most anime, but the one liners in BR hit my funny bone a lot. It also made me feel really sad at the end, which was great. I don't think I've ever come close to really tearing up while watching an anime like I did during the "Kazuki is gone" scenes. It was obvious he wasn't (especially since it was episode 24), but it still got to me. I felt a lot for Tokiko during the series, she was a beautifully done character. I'm not one to nitpick over action in series like this (wierd huh, seeing as it's shounen), but the fights left an epic feel in my mind almost every time in this series. No points off for action, even if some of the names were corny (when aren't they? Thinking of them as battle cries helped). To me, I enjoy action shows like this that have good character stories/development. If an anime can have both of these, it's much better than a "omgwtf action" show AND a "aw /love /drama" anime. Don't ask me why. :P 10/10. |

1. Same as anime 2. Spoiler for manga differences:
3. Besides a few events in the middle, everything plays out similarly.
