Ooooh update.
It's a good thing the prologue shows the tone and scope of the story quite well, and right off the bat showing off the political aspects with this small, if relevant piece on how the Japanese government views the entire situation. Good stuff

Also keep in mind that they're not just fighting people in this world. They're potentially fighting large and very tough fantasy creatures. Like a troll. 10-12 feet tall and built with the giant bones and muscle of a male silver back gorilla. Against something like that, you would probably want to opt to your older Type 64's, simply because their 7.62 cartridges pack more punch. |

The biggest problem is getting dedicated translators for a series that's this obscure outside of Japan (most translation projects like this are motivated because there was an anime/manga series), plus the fact that this ISN'T a light novel. There's allot more material to translate. |

That said I do agree they'd want something with more punch, I'd just expect to see the majority of soldiers armed with the newer rifle.

If the infantry that fought off the initial invasion in Tokyo had a great deal of trouble killing the larger fantasy monsters with the Type 89's, it'd be entirely reasonable fr the leader of the Recon platoon to request Type 64's to be taken out of storage for his unit. They DID built hundreds of thousands of the things. |

Depending on how it's handled and how good the art is, could very well take over ID's top spot for me on anything that involves fantasy and female elf warriors

It is worth noting that the author is a retired soldier and may just have a preference for the older gun, and not the new fangled thing. Its not uncommon to see soldiers be hesitant about entrusting their lives to new pieces of equipment that's quality and reliability are yet to be proven. A perfect example would be the M1 to the M-16 transition. Initially a lot of the older soldiers HATED the M-16. Not only did it pack a lot less kick, (it was called a pea shooter) It also had a tendency to foul up and jam.

M1-M14-M16 While that COULD be a reasoning behind it, considering that they're not just fighting against regular human type sized enemies, there could be plenty of motivation to bring something with a heavier round. The transition to lighter assault rifle rounds happened under the context that -An unarmored man hit by 5.56mm NATO is just as likely to be made a casualty as one hit by 7.62mm NATO and -Modern firefights are often determined by volume of suppression fire than aimed shots. |

Given that manga is easier to translate than the hefty novels that Gate is, we can at least expect much faster updates on the manga than on the novel translations. Hell, if the manga takes off we might see some good progress on the novel translations as well
