Just watch the 1st episode raw.
They adapted the emotional scene between Yumemi and the Planetarium's staff right at the beginning as shown in the extended PV. Then it followed the beginning of the novel faithfully. Art and animation was good, BGM was fairly nice. Not much happened at this point, though my true commitment to the original novel only came at the latter half of the story, so this is to be expected. I wish all 5 episodes are released now so we can have the full experience of this beautiful short story. But for now, I'm pleased with what I saw.

First episode is really nice. This really shows what kind of existance Yumemi is: Machine by nature, with some programmed emotions, but having clear purpose and "pride of robots". The anime seems to show more emotion than the KN, and that's quite fitting as an anime.
Timing to pull the heartstrings are also done right. But I'm not sure how does it feel to anime only audiences, because some moments might be lost if you're not familiar enough with the characters. Episode length including ED is 18 minutes only, but it's still quite satisfying and ended just the right moment. If every episodes are similar length, then it will be around 90 minutes total, and no wonder there's no volume number to the BD - probably all episodes are on one disc. |

Episode 1:
Hmm, I thought that was actually strange and cute the same time. Hoshino (the robot girl) introduces herself and we see how this series' world works. Meanwhile, I find it peculiar that there's almost no human left in their world. The Space Colonization Program gave me an experimental feel about the plot as well. The anime seems lighthearted so far but with also darker themes. It's only about 20+ minutes long so there wasn't too much but introducing the general premise for now. I'll look forward to more to see how it develops.

There wasn't much, but it looks promising. Hoshino is cute, but sad at the same time. She is pretty much stuck there serving anyone that comes by and trying to continue the role she was made for and she even seems to do it happily. Meanwhile it doesn't seem like her creators are ever coming back.

Well, I'm liking Planetarian more than Rewrite so far, that's for sure.
Very good 1st episode for Planetarian. Quote:
I like the contrast between the two lead characters, and I like how the male lead is pretty hardened and morose, beyond what you typically see with Key male leads. It makes sense that the guy is like this, and it makes those brief moments of real connection between him and Hoshino that much more effective. I also like how Episode 1 presents some good hints and some broad features to this fictional world, but leaves a lot to mystery and speculation. It relies more on atmospheric show than on exposition-heavy tell, and that's probably for the best here. A very solid start to this anime show. As an anime-original viewer, I'm satisfied so far.

Excellent first episode for an excellent VN. They totally nailed Yumemi's beautiful appearance as well as the desolate setting.
My only issues are the mediocre ED song and the fact that they skipped some essential world-building, but I can always skip the former and it's possible for them to cover the latter in the next few episodes. Plus, holding back on explaining the setting at first has plenty of its own strengths: it leaves the viewer to wonder what the hell happened to the world to make it end up the way it is. Well, both have a cute robot girl with light-colored hair in a sci-fi setting, and the comparisons pretty much end right there. Even as "robots" Isla and Yumemi are very different in nature; Isla's AI is basically the same as a human while Yumemi's AI is obviously computer-like (in a very cute way), and Isla is some complex semi-organic body that eats and drinks and even needs to use the toilet while Yumemi is just a robot. Also the source is basically 11 years older than PlaMemo. Last edited by Tempester; 2016-07-07 at 22:23. |

Ep 01
Okay - that was really, really good. Even lovely at parts. The chibi aspect at the end was not so much my cuppa - felt out of tune with the overall ambiance of the episode proper. When the MC was walking away from Yumemi through the rain and she continued rattling on, perhaps being left all alone for who knows how many more years while retaining the smile on her face my heart was breaking ... was so glad he (apparently) turned around and went back to her. Also a good move to stop the episode on his pivoting, I felt. BTW - @ germanturkey ... it seems the releases will be weekly?

This. This.
This is what I waited so meany years for. Words cannot fully express my joy for finally seeing this. Except for a few issues with that ED, this went out almost exactly as I had always hoped it would be. The story is as simple and straightforward as can be and I'm glad they stuck almost verbatim the the original without really changing anything. Case in point in Yumemi's welcoming speech while she was practicing. It was even translated almost exactly the same as the original fan translation all those years back (I checked). Almost nothing to complain from me. If they can continue the rest and Hoshi no Hito as they are now, then I can finally let the story go with no regrets.

This is actually my first experience with Planetarian, but I've being around long enough to know many fans hold this title in high regard. Pretty good first episode, I find myself drawn to the underlying current of sadness beneath the always smiling Yumemi, because she doesn't register the desolation around her and just continues to do her job with enthusiasm. 29 years and 81 days, that's a long time if she's been awake and waiting all this time for nobody that's gonna come back for her. Oh and does it seem like the old guy was perhaps the last customer she had then, lol.

Sold!
I liked that, the robot who's continuing to fulfil programming years on end with no customers because the city's dead, and the guy who stumbles across her. One to watch. Though I did keep thinking "Why is the BGM riffing on What a friend we have in Jesus?" |

Perhaps the tune speaks to the impact that Hoshino will have on the male lead. Maybe the male lead will open up to her, and come to take great comfort in her words. Maybe she'll be a truly great friend to him.

I vaguely remember hearing from somewhere that that was done from the get go by Key. Don't remember hearing the reasons why that particular song, though.
