I'm actually fairly impressed with the first episode. Besides maybe some rushing, it was consistent with solid animation, OST, and action. I find Kana Hanazawa's role as Rize to be somewhat odd though.
I hope we see the full OP song next time. On another note, I noticed the studio being Pierrot. With the episode # count being unconfirmed for now, I wonder if it will be a 1 cour.. Otherwise, pretty good start so far. Need more! |

I like the first episode I kind of suspected Rize was the binge Ghoul, and also the whole crane thing falling on her is very suspicious someone/thing must have had a hand in it. I loved the gore I needed something to replace Pupa, seems like this did and I love that it's Seinen.

We all knew Rize would be the ghoul shown at the beginning of the ep, but the reveal was still pretty shocking anyways. That was some good writing/directing. The "must not feed" conflict has been done before, but the struggle is portrayed so passionately, violently even -- with his attempts to eat normal food, it's really compelling. Great first episode.

Knew Hanazawa as Rize would be an odd choice. She's ok when she's trying to be crazy but someone like Hisaka Yoko or Noto Mamki would have been a better choice. Pacing might have been a little bit too quick but the direction was good. What I'm worried is how many cours the anime is going to have. The promotion material covers a lot of the series and if they are going for 1 cour then things could get quite messy from here and on. Cross my fingers that they don't screw up too hard.

quite a good episode, interesting premise and I hope the MC isn't going to whine about his demise for the entire season though
I'm cool with 2-3 episodes and some self-reflection, but please don't drag that have some questions though: - if blades/knife doesn't work on ghoul...how can the "surgeon" operate and implant the organ(s?) from rize's body into our MC? surely they have to cut something here and there to take the organ(s), cut it and sew it to our MC - if the blade and knife doesn't work, how come rize died(?) in the first half of the episode (sure it was from falling debris but you get my point)? or they do work on ghouls, you just need stronger force behind it...if that's the case, what about bullet (no need to answer this if it will be covered in the future episode) Quote:
slightly better when she went full-on batshit crazy though

To avoid spoilers, it will be explained down line... depending on how far the anime gets and whether anything is changed from here on till that point. |

Liked the first episode. Casting is good so far. Kana-Hana sounded a little stiff at first, but she sounded better when she let loose and went crazy. Amamiya and Kaneki's voice actor (sorry, can't recall his name at the moment) were really good. Hopefully, the show can keep up the quality.

Yeah I will say the first time I heard Rize's voice coming from the normal looking version of her...it was pretty odd. Definitely didn't sound like the kind of voice you'd expect from that kind of person. Did work pretty well when she went into more of a ghoul mode so I can see why they went the way they did.
I really felt for that guy in this first episode. Beside the first date from hell the conflict was tough to watch. You could see him starting to realize what had happened and fighting with everything he had. Every sensibility that was keeping him human was going right up against that ghoul desire for human flesh. Sadly he was turning to the wrong kind of person for any sort of help there . I'm not even sure how he's going to mentally respond to what happened there. Certainly an episode with a lot of impact. Will have to see where the story goes.

This was kind of underwhelming. I realize it's essentially just a shounen manga with some horror elements, but for a moment or two I expected something more... Oh well. The ghoul tentacles were also kind of disappointing, way to ruin something that could've been almost genuinely menacing-looking.
Otherwise the visuals and the voice acting are nice, so I'll keep watching for the time being, to see if there's some development with the Hide guy (ie. whether the main chara eats him in the near future or he survives and plays any kind of important role). |

Nice first episode. Watching Kaneki agonize over his changes was just as heart wrenching in the anime as it was in the manga. But, good to know I wasn't completely forgetting things because as I watched the episode I thought, wait I don't remember that scene between Rize and you know who.

Loved the first ep, haven't read the manga or even viewed the PV so I enjoyed watching this without any expectations. Hopefully I don't crack after a few weeks and go to town on the manga like I did with Shingeki...

Very solid first ep. Yes, it's gore, but for me the psychological aspect is far more interesting. They showed just enough human-Kaneki to make his anguish relatable. I also like the fact that there's some hierarchy among ghouls, and that there are 'good' and 'bad' ghouls.
I hope Hide remains human (at least for a while), though he's surrounded by ghouls. I like the guy, he seems pretty bight. |

Overall I liked it. But it's a bit baffling that the police didn't question him, what were you doing there, what happened, how did the girl get crushed, etc, at the hospital the boy didn't realize he was a ghoul yet so it wouldn't have been difficult to get the truth out of him. The public is clearly aware of ghouls, you'd think they would be able to tell the organ was from a ghoul. The doctor looked kinda suspicious, but that doesn't explain why the police didn't question him whatsoever. Anyway the rest of the story is solid so I'm just going to overlook this.
