I'm VERY hungry, especially after seeing the recipe for the Inari-zushi and Kitsune-udon prepared in Episode 1. Someone already translated it, by the way.
The Inari-zushi is much easier, so anyone who knows how to cook rice and fry tofu should be able to prepare it.

If there's one thing that needed the Shaft style, it was this, but Shinbou doesn't do it? I am shocked. Maybe I'm just used to Shokugeki no Soma (of which I have read a dozen or so chapters of), but this series is just so bland it needs something to spice it up. Or it might just be me where 'cute girls doing cute things' just doesn't interest me even if its Okada writing it? I dunno.

Well honestly I could do with a bit more comedy and such myself too. Maybe when the rest of cast gets introduced things will get a bit more interesting otherwise I'm kinda of okay with this being my comfy anime season espeically with my near rock bottom expectations going in. |

Does anyone else think Shaft is now trying to do KyoAni-style shows and vice versa? I could see Shaft producing Amagi Brilliant Park, for one, and of course Tamako Market revolved around a certain type of food.

LOL, I thought Akira's introduction was quite amusing. She practically jumped her friend while feeding her D:
I liked how they become friends so fast and in that charming way under the pretty Sakura trees. I also thought Michiko was pretty cute when she was little. Spotted some Shaft style head tilts this episode. The girls eating together under the Sakura Trees is really something though. What a delicious episode~

You've managed to confused Shiina with Akira. The latter was the one that force fed Ryou when they met up at the park. Shiina did nothing of the sort. I know those two characters look somewhat similar, but they're in two completely different locations, played by different VA's, and act nothing alike. How could you possibly confuse them? There were only four characters (Ryou, Kirin, Akira, and Shiina) during the festival and you couldn't tell them apart. Well done.

Overall sweet episode.
I noticed that they put a lot of effort into the sound effects, specifically Kirin's shoe pop sound. When I rewatched the episode, Kirin's shoes would make that popping sound from quiet to loud depending on how close she is on the screen as long as she walks on solid ground (so not on grass). This doesn't seem significant but there is one exception. I was intrigued when right after Ryou's flashback scene with her grandma, Kirin's shoes didn't make the popping sound at all despite being so close on the screen. The flashback emitted a small yet noticable feeling of loneliness or maybe nostalgia, underlined by Ryou's faint smile. Kirin basically read the atmosphere and then tried to cheer her up with her suggestion, also as a way to deepen their quasi family bond of course. Naturally, Ryou kinda returned the favour with those fried eggs and she even showed Kirin her and her grandma's special sakura viewing place. Anyway... lots of memorable stuff happened in this one imo. The "sakura mochi job". That couldn't have been more suggestive! The tamagoyaki with slimy cheese filling. That's... that's not how fried eggs work! Kirin's eyes showing us how she turned into the grilled corn witch!? Are we sure there is no Kyubei hidden inside that magical meat roll bag? And well, lots of SHAFT tilts for those who didn't find it shafty enough.

After watching those two episodes I'll have no choice but to make it tomorrow, together with tamagoyaki, and re-watch them while stuffing my head. Time to wash the rice and fire up that suihanki ;-) |

SHAFT working their magic.
But after 2 episodes..i fail to see if its attempting any kind of story. Just a girl from the country hanging out with her older cousin who she for some reason idolizes. Some soft yuri-esque scenes. It doesn't even go into cooking, they're just eating. Other than that its about the most non-interactive slice of life I seen.

It's definitely something that you'd end up watching and leaving (thus my very low expectations in commercial success for this series), but it works for me as someone who just wants to watch cute girls eating nice cuisine.
As for Episode 2, we finally see the world outside of Ryou and Kirin, and Kirin definitely feels left out with new characters confessing their love for Ryou and her cooking. Fortunately, Ryou understands this and welcomes Kirin to her world, through her tummy of course. Question: is Japanese mustard that hot compared to Western ones?
