Well from the third episode onward the show has been a road trip through a post-apocalyptic wasteland with giant people eating monsters. So it was pretty dark from the start, it was just so cute and cheerful that you did not notice it so much.

I noticed it all just well. I just gave it no importance. Speculating too much about an anime seldom leads to anything but discovering more plot holes. Normally I'm just in for the ride and don't have much faith in the plot. It took me a while to put trust into this anime actually having a plot beyond what was going on at the surface. And even at episode 11 of 12 I'm not sure what more will be explained and what will forever be filed under "it's sandstar magic, I won't explain shit".
For example the Ceruleans were game lore but appeared very infrequently in the anime and never gave off the feeling of posing real threat. I took them as a cameo and a convenient tool to pull a quick action scene whenever needed. Chekhov lived in a very simple world ... |

This show has turned into one of the best shows in recent anime history. Yes, the graphics are pretty meh, and the start few episodes are pretty boring, but the biggest thing about it is actually how the director managed to turn a train wreck into something amazing.
At the start: -Only 10 people in the whole anime staff -Budget so low that the car wheels doesn't even spin in the OP, have to change all the voices from the game since they can't afford them -Game App, Manga, goods collaborations all ended before the show aired And it's easy to think, at the start: well why would I watch this show? There are no famous people working on it, no collabo, can't even try the game anymore. Maybe Uchida Aya if you like her, or if you like Yoshizaki Mine's character designs. However, the director has managed to make this miracle happen. The show starts slow, seems to be your run-of-the-mill moe-kemonomimi anime, but there are subtle hints dropped all over the place. Thus speculation starts. Watchers starts to make theories - is it a world that takes place where the app has ended? Or is it the world where all people died and animals evolved? What's with the ED with images from the Pripyat theme park? And what's with the Sandstar and Ceruleans? Each episode they slowly reveal a small piece, for the viewers to piece the puzzle back together. As there are more and more information, more speculations and theories from the fans. Slowly this show has turned into a mystery novel type - viewers are hooked in to find out what's going to happen next. It's no surprise that some consider this show to be the next best thing after Madoka Magica, with the same reason. And here we are, the day before episode 12. Will it be an happy end? Will it be a sad end? Will it end up to be one of the best show this season offers, or will it tank at the end? Regardless, it has been an amazing journey so far, and the miracle of Tatsuki (director) is that he has turn the show into: -4 million views of episode 1 on Nicovideo (Gochiusa is at 8 million, but it took 1 year to reach 4 million) -90%+ rated "1" (1 is best out of a 5 pt scale) on each episode airing since episode 4. (except the original airing of episode 11, which has a 89.3% "1"s because there was trouble with the stream. When they re-aired it days after, episode 11 had a 97.2% "1"s) -462k people watched the episode 1-11 recap special, with 2.7 million comments (almost 1 million higher than Madoka Magica special) and 97.6% of "1"s. -Manga and goods collaborations returned around half way of the show -Volume 1 of DVD/BD are sold out at pre-order level, and they had to print more. It's too bad that the appreciation level for this show outside Japan just isn't as big.

The barrier of entry of getting used to the 3DCG animation is pretty insurmountable. Hell even this very thread is relatively puny. You gotta be one hell of persuader to get lots to peeps in the West to watch this. Like analytical articles from major blogs and websites and so on.

Well actually, it seems the general consensus is that it was already interesting from the first episode. As you already got mysteries like the enemy and robot. The second episode revealed the meaningful ED. Third episode was simply entertaining.
The problem was the viewers getting past the first few minutes. But WIXOSS' staff already knew it was gonna be a big hit. They collaborated with the game long before the anime came out. Anyways, as for the Western audience... *shrug* The only ones losing out are them, after all. "Are you serious? You haven't watched one of the best anime in the recent history yet? *laugh*" <- What I plan to say whenever I talk about anime with someone and they said they never watched it

So, this was definitely a finale. With quite the cliffhanger in episode 11, I really liked having the entire cast rallied to battle to rescue Kaban and save the park. It's a bit cliche, but so what? It gets used because it works.
So, it seems theories were partly correct: Kaban was formed from Mirai, but only a strand of hair that was stuck to the hat. Mirai (apparently) survived to evacuate the island along with the rest of the Humans. It is interesting that Kaban reformed into a living being after being eaten, though. I wonder if Friends formed from fossils or the like would be turned into a living version of that animal if they were eaten? Actually they starting turning black in the beginning of that scene, before she climbed the tree. Theories around the internet are that her gloves (which have been missing since she reformed) are slowly reappearing as well. They are a part of her Friend outfit. This is strengthened by the fact that she also reformed without her stockings, but they slowly grew back throughout the scenes.

The black thing has been theorized that her black "gloves" and "tights" are actually part of her "friends" identity. You can see that in the beginning of the show she has them. Once she was eaten, she lost her "friends" identity like they have explained regarding what happens to friends that are eaten (you can also see the only victim, hyena, turned back into an animal), and turned back into her animal form (human). Thus the "black stuff" is gone. When both of them meets the other lucky-beast at the beach, she doesn't have any of the black stuff.
As time passes she starts to slowly regain her "friends" identity, and slowlgets the black stuff back. You can see that she only has it on her finger tips when talking to Serval at the amusement park, but it spreads to half her hand when she is on the Japari-boat.

I wonder who the friends were that followed Kaban with the other half of the bus boat. I guess the producers don't know either (yet) and wait and see which nendoroid will sell best. Ironically, that angry looking meme bird didn't even appear in the final episode - or did it? That was definitely the anime of the season (and more) for me. And I've been following a lot even if I've only commented here. Kemono Friends was certainly an exceptional anime not only looking at it's popularity but also concerning how it became popular so late in Japan and never really took off in he rest of the world. It will be cited as an example in the neverending discussions about what it means that an anime is "good" as opposed (or not) to "popular" and how to carefully judge anime in early stages. And the QUALITY of Crunchy's translations ... |

With the show now wrapped up, I just wanted to say how pleasantly surprised I was by the whole thing. Very cute with a fairly intriguing world, characters, and creatures. I honestly would've liked to see more, but I understand they had limited resources and budget. (Though, I wouldn't rate this show nearly as high as some others are, lol. It was fun, it was adorable, it was way more coherent than anyone expected it to be. But it wasn't earth-shattering by any means.)

That really was a pleasant surprise all around.
The first episode looked so bad that I wasn't sure I'd even keep watching for much longer. But honestly that side of it stabilized well enough that the story and mystery could carry it. It was an interesting little show that you couldn't help but want to see more of. Especially once things got more serious later on. It was just really enjoyable. Credit to the people working on it. It got more enjoyable as it went along and allowed it to end on a high note. To the point where I was glad that Serval and company(?) joined on the journey. Really leaves itself open to being picked up and that's fine by me.

1. The show is CGI (some western anime fans are anti-CGI). 2. This season has been a real busy one given what's being offered (i.e. Season 2 of Konasuba, Dragon Maid, Little Witch Academia).

Hey, my job is over. Kemono Friends ran its cour. So what do I do? I'll just making some more anime of Kemono Friends.
http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm30968065 And then Tatsuki became god. And it's probably have more views and comments than some of the Spring 2017 anime too. Kemono Friends vs. Winter 2017 has now become Kemono Friends vs. Spring 2017?!
