I read volume 8.
It was good because there were a lot of conversations of Horo and Lawrence though there was no dramatic development. Horo who suffers from muscular pain was amusing. Before, I read something as the author's talk, this series probably will be completed by about ten volumes (I think that they were 13 or 16 volumes). They are already near the Yoitsu. But it is likely to take time before arriving there. If my impression from volume 1 to volume 9 is shown by the key word, it is as follows. Vol.I "Encounter" : Loneliness, Apple, Horo's transformation Vol.Ⅱ "Nora": Bankruptcy, smuggling, and jealousy The following is a spoiler. Spoiler:

There is no licensed version of Spice and Wolf for english.
So.. for the time being, there's a group of translation hobbyists working on a draft english translation for self-enrichment ( ). See the translation thread next door for more info.

Hmmm, going to see if my local Kinokuniya has volume 8 before I have it imported ....
those illustrations provide examples of the hilarious and the romantic aspects I like about the story.

Maybe it's just me, but does anyone else think the illustrations are a bit weird? They always seem a bit two-dimensional, especially their faces. (Mainly the black and white images.) Still, this is a novel, not a manga, so whatever.

The illustrator for the novels employs a stylistic effect. In my opinion, they're trying to affect a medieval "woodcut" feel. Whether it works or not obviously depends on the taste of the viewer.
The manga adaptation uses a slightly different style but it also seems to vary more.

I have to restrain myself from reading any of the spoilers. I've only been able to find english translations for the first two volumes. I'll just have to keep looking at some of the pictures to get a little teaser of things to come.
