PC Gamer - Duke Nukem Forever review

Actually that review was quite fair, more fair than most of the "critics" on gamefaqs give it "oh my gaawwwdd two weapon limit, this game is failzors now! i canceled my pre order cuz i think im cool by telling everyone"

This caught my eye

The old-style design is probably due to the fact that DNF should’ve come out years
ago. (Hell, 2K’s recommended PC is built from five-year-old hardware.

I'm still curious as to why the game came out so late or was stuck in development hell for so long. Even Blizzard's not that bad in that department.

I remember an article that came out when 3d Realms got sued by Take Two over it, but can't seem to find it right now. It was either Miller or Broussard or both who just kept wanting to add more features or use better engines--to make sure the next Duke Nukem was the absolute best FPS on the market with best of everything--that kept it delayed so long. So essentially they could have released at several points in time but wanted something to exceed the hype/expectations and were complete idiots about how to do it.

It looks like one of the greatest internet jokes of all time is about to end soon. Now people will wait for Starcraft: Ghost instead.

More like Freespace 3. (since Blizzard could pull Ghost out whenever they want, if they want...even use it as part of the Heart of the Swarm expansion for all they care... but Freespace 3? How?)

There's a good article on exactly what went wrong with Duke Nukem Forever.

Aside from a desire to implausibly include EVERY new piece of technology in the game, there was also another problem. Duke Nukem 3D had been a title that had sold MILLIONS of copies. But the team that had created it was a small independent guerrilla team of under a dozen guys. They were LOADED with cash, so were operating under no real pressure to get it out in a timely manner.

This attitude persisted until they REALLY did run out of money.

Things that happened during DNF development:

1.Microsoft has launched Halo and its two sequels later.
2.Gamers generally began to detest Halo.
3.Rockstar made Grand Theft Auto and many sequels and spin-offs later and become one of the most controversial games ever,especially the infamous "hot coffee" mod.
4.ID Software made a new Doom game.
5.The same company also released Quake 2,3,4 and many games have used their engines.
6.All Pokemon games make their way outside Japan.
7.Mario has appeared in 60 different games.
8.Nintendo became second largest company in Japan.
9.Sega went bankrupt and stopped making their own consoles.
10.SNK-Neo Geo also went bankrupt.
11.All King of Fighters games after 97 one.
12.Starcraft: Ghost also still waiting perhaps will replace DNF someday.
13.World of Warcraft has been launched and become the largest online game in the world.
14.Blizzard,another company which had infamous delays have released five full games(Diablo 2 ,Starcraft ,Warcraft 3, World of Warcraft and Starcraft 2).
15.More than 50 Star Wars game has been made.
16.Many add-ons and extras for Duke Nukem 3D.
17.Over 75 games based in the MegaMan universe, and 12 games featuring MegaMan universe character cameos.
18.Sierra and Valve has launched Half-Life and Half-Life 2, several expansions and countless of mods each.
19.Every Tony Hawk and extreme sport spin-off games.
20.EA games and Will Wright made The Sims, The Sims 2, The Sims 3 and many expansion and stuff packs for each.
21.Countless of eroges also make their way outside Japan.

Anime and Manga:

1.Naruto, Bleach and One Piece craze replaced the DBZ one completely.
2.Anime viewers start to hate Naruto,Bleach and One Piece.
3.School Days is made and (annoying)Nice Boat joke were spread into internet like wildfire.
4.Yosuga no Sora VN is made, adapted to anime and become the first mainstream late-night anime that have full incestuous on-screen sex scene.
5.At least about 300+ anime series is made, not counting movies, OVAs and ONAs.
6.In 1997, 4Chan did not exist.
7.Higurashi series is born and inspire some Japanese teenagers to kill(seriously).

Huh, this is why developers have to have a deadline to follow and shouldn't deviate from it.

Throughout forums I keep hearing people talking about, "It's okay, they can take 12 years to make [insert game name] so long as they do it right."

There's no such thing as "right" and these things only have a window of opportunity and Duke Nukem forever lost that many years ago.

Funny though that there are internet articles popping up about it

Unfortunately...yes. They seem to have, waited too long, and taken the worst thrends in FPS games of the last ten years to heart.

There are reportedly some good things in there (aside from the humor), but the game is reportedly way too linear to stack up with Duke Nukem 3D.

I'd personally include some extra stuff as well.

3.Killzone tried and failed to kill Halo
4.Modern Warfare beat Halo in terms of Sales but that didn't actually affect Halo
5. Before Halo Reach even came out 3 years after Halo 3 gamers started detesting COD.

Heh. I'm always amazed that people keep saying this. Yeah, it's the largest subscription based MMO in the world, but largest online game? Hardly. Free to play games surpass that number five times over, if not more.
