Shit's pretty serious... and that's an understatement.
The northern coast of BC is on watch last time I checked, but people are also worried about Vancouver Island. It's like 3 in the morning over here, and I'm still getting texts from my father in the Philippines. The northern regions are the most exposed, I would expect. I have a few friends up in Japan too. My friend's family lives there... Watching the footage, I can't help but be awed at the scale of it all, and feel pretty freaked out at the same time. |

Latest data is suggesting tsunami height of 3-6 feet on Oregon coastal points. Just fyi, a 3 foot wave is not splishsplash... its a rise in ocean height of 3 feet and pushes the water's edge much farther inland.
Midway reportedly saw a wave height of 5 feet (unconfirmed).

there is some good news. The JPY rose against the USD, which gives it more value and allows less expensive reconstruction for the Japanese for the disaster. Usually speedier construction projects to deal with crises costs more, and this rise should make the flow of cash from the government more possible towards infrastructure repairs and rebuilding costs, allowing the society to get back to their lives faster. This rise will give forex watchers more reason to buy-and-hold the JPY, and in such also help their government get worthy cash to outsource for more personnel to help their already manpower-strapped civil defence.
The first thing would be to get power restored. In darkness, it would facilitate crime and cause more damage to society, plus it would have keep lives on the line with life-support units.

I hope the the people have long been evacuated before the tsunami hits. Those pictures are not pretty. On the other hand, Japan has the world's best quake resisting buildings, and the fact that it happens during the day means at least the lose of lives is not that severe than it could be.
