Gotta love when anime trots out the we can all be friends trope. Doesn't matter how f'ed up the situation may be earlier, people are always forgiven and it's all good! lol.
If Tadano were smart he'd remind psycho that Komi values his friendship a lot, so getting on his bad side is not a good idea if she wants to remain on good terms with her. |

One of the worst characters and worst episodes of any anime I've seen in a long time. Writing on that level pretty much confirms that anything the series does that works is more or less an accident.

Hey, if you like the show rewarding a borderline criminal for her actions by giving her exactly what she wanted and committed said crime for (yes, what she did is a legit crime), then that's on you. I personally found this part in the manga (when I read it) to be really out of taste and not funny in the least, no amount of good animation or voice work is going to change that.
And it's not like I couldn't have found it funny, if it had stopped at just Yamai tying him up so that Komi would spend time with her and not him then ok, but she was legit willing to kill him, she doesn't deserve friendship, she deserves jail time, plain and simple.

Personally I hated Yamai in this episode, same as the manga. Still, I'm with Frontier on this; her voice work and mannerisms was a treat to watch, but I'd rather not have her around otherwise. I don't really take the killing stuff seriously, even if the char in question is serious; I just see it as part of the joke. Not saying other people should see it that way, or here to argue about it, just I that enjoyed it for what it was =03.

Agreed, if we had our way we'd probably kick Yamai out of the series post haste but it's the author's work and not ours and even someone like her has some kind of purpose in it, even if it's just to fill small moments of panel/camera time, then that's that. Outside of that hiccup, the series so far has been quite enjoyable for me.

A writer walks a fine line using Yanderes. If they are portrayed as being too dangerous they are no longer funny or amusing. If they are shown to be too persistent they can easily overwhelm the entire story making the reader feel uncomfortable and/or annoyed.

Episode 5:
Everyone is going gaga over Komi in her Summer uniform. I guess the effect of seeing her bare arms and exposed chest is pretty amazing. Of course poor Komi just doesn't understand what the fuss is about . Yadano is still talking to the audience and trying to defeat Komi, but Komi not only makes a striking figure in her gym clothes but is also fairly athletic. And just when Yadano is willing to finally concede, she perceives Komi not returning her handshake as a sign to renew their rivalry, even though it seemed like Komi was about to take her hand. I guess a rival is a friend in their own way . Najimi goes for the jugular and asks if they can go to Komi's house, and Komi agrees with some trepidation . The trio encounter Komi's mom, Shuko, who is the spitting image of her daughter but turns out to be an energetic and cheeky anime mom voiced by Kikuko Inoue. They even made the "Forever 17" joke, just minus the typical "oi oi" reaction . Najimi checking for embarrassing stuff Komi leaves around in her room and even checks the usual porn stash hideout...only to find books on communicating and talking to cats. Komi you sweet, sweet, girl . I love how Najimi leaves Komi and Tadano alone and they just chill and go around her room while barely talking . Komi wants to eat Ramen and it turns out Agari takes Ramen extremely seriously, to the point where she almost becomes a different character when it comes to Ramen. Although she's still a goofball in her own way . I guess it figures someone who can barely talk above a whisper could deliver the order of someone who can't communicate . Nakanaka, the resident Chuuni of the class, has a Chuuni freakout in front of Komi and asks to sign a "blood contract" between them, because she just wants to be friends with Komi. But Komi takes it seriously and actually asks Nakanaka to explain everything, which just drives her away . Tadano also had his own Chuuni phase where he was extra on everything, even confessing to a girl, and said girls' rejection because he was so cringe and overboard was enough to cement his status as someone who is nothing but "ordinary" . Nakanaka is alone because everyone wants some time with Komi in the gym, but Komi still walks over to her to be her partner, and they sign the "contract" and become friends, even if Nakanaka won't be honest about it . Najimi you rascal...playing wingperson and stealing Tadano's umbrella so he'd have to use Komi and they could have a nice romantic walk in the rain together. And Komi actually waited for him. The sun is certainly shining on this pair .

Episode 6
Komi tries comedy! Except it's not easy for someone who can't speak to do comedy when it relies on people reading your notebook...although even when she's able to talk over the phone (allowing us to hear Aoi Koga talk again) all she can deliver is dad jokes. Not that Tadano's much better . Poor Komi has never gone shopping and has just worn what her mother buys her...but that's a perfect excuse for a shopping trip! They even rope in Agari and Yamai just happens to stop by. Just by coincidence, of course . Komi fashion show! A girl as gorgeous as Komi, it would be a waste not to have her try on multiple outfits and make a competition out of it! Najimi goes for the sexy China dress, Yamai goes for the sexy casual wear that shows off Komi's amazing legs, Agari goes for something tacky yet cute, and Tadano ends up winning by going for a simple one piece dress that looks amazing on Komi! Of course Najimi also did a "serious" one of Komi in a studious style with glasses that was pretty great too . Time for Komi to get a haircut, and luckily the stoic yet stylish Karisu has had enough experience with Komi to be able to understand her, even with her inability to get out a word. The same can't be said for new hire Arai who desperately wants to be like Karisu and is energetic and happy, but is the worst fit for someone who isn't good at talking and just wants to get their hair cut and be done. Komi even pretends to be asleep so no one will talk to her (I can relate with that). But luckily Komi is able to convey her message through words in a magazine . I love how Tadano is the only one who noticed she got a haircut. I mean, it doesn't really look any different, but Tadano noticing and everybody else being depressed that they didn't was priceless . Komi seems like the type who would be very anxious and self-reflective about her day and how she acted, always second-guessing herself and how she acts and whether she came off badly to others (and why do those cat ears spontaneously appear?). But it's her memory of Tadano reassuring her that makes her happy and calm and lets her sleep . I kind of figured Najimi wasn't the studying type, although they're smart enough to get good grades in-spite of that, but that leads to a library study group with the trio that also has them under the watchful eye of Gorimi, the big librarian monitor girl who, if you disrupt the library enough times, will kick you out. Which Najimi seems to take as a personal challenge as they can't help themselves and even get Komi and Tadano hit with the harisen on their way out the door...but it was at least fun for Komi and Tadano to get in a little trouble . Tadano should sue for likeness violation on that "Trashboy is Fun" book . Komi in loungewear! Also Komi finishing all her Summer homework and not having anything else to do over Summer Break! Luckily Najimi sets up the per-requisite pool episode, and Komi and Tadano are as pumped as the audience .

If I had a vote I'd get rid of Yamai in the most natural way. Have her thrown in jail since she kidnapped someone with the intent to murder them! But hey, can't control what authors do. Can certainly criticize their decisions though.
A lot of cute moments in that summer setup episode. Tadano and Komi are definitely cute. Just everything they do together or regarding each other is cute. You have things like Tadano being the only one to notice her haircut (trim), which was great. I kind of loved the idea that Komi was super self-conscious about her interactions with everyone through the day...but when it comes to Tadano she's so comfortable that she can just rest. There's absolute trust there. The outfit thing was also good . I do appreciate that Komi despite her troubles showed the most confidence. Tadano was going to waver for a while. If Najimi hadn't called first she would have asked him out. Of course it helps the both of them since they were both stressing out over it. But nice to see that Komi has the ability to make that call.
