Studio 3Hz continues to shine with Princess Principal following on Flip Flappers. Director Tachibana Masaki apparently spent some time at I.G before moving to 3Hz. At I.G he made Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, did the storyboard for the remarkably choreographed third episode of Moribito, and a bunch of work on various parts of the GitS franchise. He also contributed storyboards for three episodes of Flip Flappers.
Is 3Hz trying to establish a niche in original productions the way P.A. Works has? I like PAW's detailed mundane style, but I also like visually stimulating shows like this one and Flip Flappers. Their first two productions were manga adaptations, but this is their second anime-original series in a row, and both had superior art direction. Where their money is coming from, who can say? Flip Flappers was a horrible flop in terms of Japanese disc sales averaging just 800 copies per release. This show seems like a pretty niche taste as well. I didn't see Studio Pablo this time around. They specialize in background designs.

Dengeki Online has a preview and some pictures of the upcoming episode (don't think it has NSFW links but exercise caution anyway, also spoilers):
http://dengekionline.com/elem/000/001/563/1563336/ The third episode is called Spoiler for Spoilers for episode 3:
Dengeki has also added another part of the interview + another article on a prototype figure for Ange (I haven't read the article but it doesn't look like it's something they're planning to sell right now). |

Ah, the lies again. For consistency's sake, let's all continue calling the girls by their usual names. So it seems Ange is really pushing herself and she initially only wanted to run away together with Charlotte. Dorothy's watched way too much Mission Impossible and that ballpoint pen was a homage to James Bond. Beatrice's backstory is something out of Frankenstein.

Episode 3
Is it just me or there's more than just friendship between Ange and Charlotte? first "Ange" tlaks about how they could live together in Casablanca, then "Charlotte" says she needs to become queen so they can be together. That sounds more like a romance. Still unsure because Anime is very poor when it comes with actually having queer characters, so that can be big pile of nothing. Also whew, Beatrice's story. That's horrifying. Explains a lot tho. |

You know, this show isn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I do wish there was a bit more of a gender balance with the "front line" characters and they don't have to mention that they're spies and they lie every three seconds and I don't get the politics in this show either but it still manages to produce some surprisingly tense cat and mouse games and decent character interactions. It pales in comparison to something like Joker Game but I still find myself hooked in spite of myself. Maybe it's just dem sick Kajiura beats.

Anyway, this time they had a lot of luck with being caught, also I wonder how Beatrice was able to mimic a voice she hasn't heard before.

Aww, Beatrice is such a loyal sweet-heart. <3
I really hope Princess Charlotte won't sacrifice her for her goal to become Queen. Seems like Ange doesn't like the idea of Charlotte to try and become queen, but with her friend being so stubborn she had no choice there. I thought she and Ange would exchange places at the end but it looks like Char will stay the princess-soon-to-be-queen and not become Ange again. Then again those two girls have lived their roles more than their real selfs by now, so who knows whats real and what's not for them.

Ep 03
Okay ... I seriously winced on hearing what Beatrice's father did to her. Wow. Just ... horrible. I also think Beatrice is a sweet and gentle soul (though definitely stubborn). I liked the interaction between her and Ange at the end of the episode too. Am still waiting for the Chise introduction episode! ^^

Beatrice's father is a real scumbag. It's too bad that the poor girl had to go through that.
Now I'm curious as to what that old promise entails and why Charlotte is so dedicated to being queen. It must have been pretty important if Ange went from just wanting to run away with her old friend to being so driven to put her friend on the throne. I'm honestly wondering why Ange wears a frilly skirt as part of her stealth outfit.

Between blatant yuri and horrible steampunk human experimenting, this is shaping up to be one hell of a ride. About the former, that was one hell of a way to start the episode, not to mention very unexpected (not that I didn't expect yuri, just not that strong and so early), but very much welcome Of course, the star of the week was Beato with her equally unexpected backstory (I was thinking of how can she do cool voice tricks without being a spy, but I was not expecting THAT) and astonishing loyalty to her princess, easily on par with Ange's, which is definetly a good common point to start a relationship from.
Overall, this felt like an usual anime episode in some ways (i.e, we need these girls to start getting along, here's how), but the content was so interesting and fun that doesn't matter much. This is gonna be fun, and probably dark. |
