I had the premonition that Cartaphilus is involved with Chise's little brother. (Maybe he is) Now we know he had some part with driving Chise's mother insane. Also I think the father is an alchemist.
Edit: Doesn't the father kind of look like Renfred? Or is that me?

Concerning the eye exchange... my first reaction was that this series is being influenced by Clamp?!?
You know the "it's all fun and games until someone loses an eye" Clamp. Last edited by SeaDoor; 2017-12-19 at 21:42. Reason: stupid typo |

The latest chapter pretty much confirms what I thought would be Joseph/Cartophilus’ backstory, i.e. them being two separate individuals. While I don’t think Joseph trying to help Cartophilus was completely out of selfless altruism (he seems to want to be someone other people can turn to, having lived his life as someone who is ostracized from society due to his profession/family history), it does make him a more interesting villain, and someone readers can sympathize with on some level. Given the whole “curse and blessing are two sides of the same coin” theme, I think Joseph giving Chise his eye might also afford her some measure of his cursed immortality. As for what Chise’s eyes will give to Joseph in turn, well, that remains to be seen (no pun intended).

There's no such thing as selfless altruism in this series. If you want to help someone then its usually because you want to do it and draw some satisfaction from it. That in turn makes it anything but selfless, though that's not a bad thing. The question is how much is Joseph in the present day and how much is Cartophilus?

Chapter 44 is out.
Spoiler for spoilers:
The next chapter comes out April 5th, so it looks like the anime will definitely have to end on an original ending somehow, as I doubt they're gonna spoil the events of an unpublished chapter. |

I wonder if Alice can become a mage rather than a sorcerer?
Also, if Elias' plan was to put the Chise's curse into Stella, it should be possible to put it into Cartaphilus instead. Or maybe go ahead with the trade and see what happens. |

Which I get. I mean, that's some disproportionate retribution right there. Throwing stones = suffering for 2000+ years, but the guys who did the crucifixion get off with death?
That being said, I think Blue Flame was trying to enter into a contract with Alice. I mean, he was introduced the same time that Ruth and the contract was introduced, so there's some good symmetry there.
