Evan Stone, the Jack Thompson of file-sharing.
Edit: Stone is a moron, because no actual hackers (of either color), network security experts or cryptographers would even give a shit about a shitty pile of shit like OP, nor would they get caught even if they did. I wonder how many parents of twelve-year-old boys are in that mass of 1,337 downloaders?

Stone is a bit smarter... but I think his ego might end up being his downfall when that part of the real hacker net decides he is fun to play with.

I'd like a video of Evan Stone's computer erupting in flames after an attack from those he was taunting. Just for the lulz.
On a serious note, I don't know what Evan has on his mind when he decides to be the white knight of the webspace. I really don't see the point, especially since 1337 is just a miniscule amount compared to the sheer number of users on the Internet. I doubt he is just making a point judging from the amount of experience he has in shutting down p2p users. I agree with what Vexx's warning. The more he tries to become the Green Hornet, the more Bloodnofskis he will encounter.

And the point is to make the users go to the legal version. Use the torrent? Risk getting sued. Watch it on hulu? No lawsuit. The more interesting question is, when the amount on the hook is probably ~$500 after fees and what not, what kind of odd settlement are they going to go for? Buy all the One Piece DVDs, sign this form, and pay the attorneys fees and we drop the suit? |

I just wonder how many of those 1,337 "users" are actually coffee shop wifi connections with big fat no-liability clauses...
That's how I get all my BayTSP monitored series, I go to Starbuck's and download it! I'll never see a DMCA letter that way.

If I invent a product, invest millions to manufacture, get safetyapproval, distribute and advertise
...then after 20 years, everybody is allowed to copy it unless it's a song or a video, then it's mine for life (and my family's till 70 years after my death) or if Its my company, I hold exclusive rights for 95-120 years Someone see something wrong here?

Funimation has to show that it is doing something to protect Japanese business interests, but they don't want to alienate their fans, either. So they pick a subtle signal that says they understand piracy completely and they appreciate their pirating fans. It's a signal that the Japanese companies won't pick up on, and still gives Funimation plausible deniability if confronted. And the Japanese companies smile and nod and say, "good job!" while letting Funimation resume their standard practices. I highly doubt any of those 1,337 lawsuits will ever go to court, or even be followed up on. |

We need to go back to that model. The current model stifles innovation and ensures every goddamned game and movie that comes out has a number in the title.

Funimation might be hoping that some of the people sued simply cave and give them the money, without thinking things through. Those that don't cave will probably be left alone.

Wonder if this will also affect Funimation's case;

Also, lol @ "The anti-P2P lawyer (not the porn actor)" - perhaps the EFF could fund the lawsuit by selling "I got screwed by Evan Stone" T-shirts.

He probably half volunteered (for a decent chunk of any settlements, of course), since it's more publicity for him, and that's clearly the idiot's aim. Plus I don't think Funi would be foolish enough to waste money suing 1337 downloaders.

Now this is actually very likely dead:
Texas chainsaw massacre: senior judge "severs" most P2P lawsuits Can't say I agree with the judges ruling at all though as it's hard to argue that a bittorrent swarm is not working together. (The issue is in the fine details for what is required for people to be "working together" for a crime if anyone is curious about why it isn't.) |
