It's interesting they have that laser, advanced camera tech and who knows what else. I got the impression such a thing was possible from the 'robot country' in the 2003 version.

The country is nuclear powered actually (not sure why the anime omit this). Which is also why they can't have a long stop, since the country and reactor won't be able to withstand the excess energy and temperature.

Irrelevant. The reactor continuously produce energy - that's the important bit, not the "how". For that matter, nuclear reactors can be and regularly are shutdown.

I do question the physics of the thing, where they have no way to use the energy without moving, though...

Rather than hard sci-fi, I think the reactor represents the idea that any energy source, hence, any civilisation, will be 'bothersome' in some way. In the real world, nuclear power doesn't use up fossil fuels, but generates nuclear waste. The moving country's people seek to minimise the damage they do by every means except for stopping the reactor and ceasing to move around. Their assumption that 'every country is bothersome in some way' rings hollow, if they're not researching a new reactor that doesn't require them to move around, and haven't tried expending the reactor's energy into windmills instead of wheels. Most of the countries in Kino's Journey have some odd solution to human problems based on their distinctive assumptions, which challenges us to look at the assumptions and injustices in our own society.

The militaristic nation was probably worse than the travelling country, but does that justify the latter's behaviour? The General was quite right to ask for an apology, even after the travelling country had verbally apologised, since they're clearly not sorry or self-critical in the least. Don't think it's possible to shoot rockets with a bolt-action rifle, but Kino's just being Kino.

So far, I like both. So... if they decide to license this in the US, I'm definitely buying it just like I did with the 2003 version

If this is any consolation for you, in-universe many people make the same mistake . Some viewers of the original anime didn't realize until they watched the final episode of the original anime (and Kino's flashback ep was already in ep 4 )

And so, fans started calling Shizu a lolicon stalker swordsman. Actually the author was the first one who started.

Poor guy. In truth the loli was stalking him, not the other way around.

Tbh as someone who read the novel i feel this episode was very lackluster. This was adapted from the second longest chapter in all hundreds of Kino's stories, much much much longer than the Colosseum one. So to squeeze it all into one episode they just had to cut a lot of meat and just left the nearly barebone. At least new viewers got to know more about Shizu's viewpoint.

I think Kino was implying at the end that she's reveal her gender to Shizu the next time they meet. I guess she has the hots for him now.

Because Ti thought Shizu was going to abandon her in that sinking ship whe he told her to return to the ship country, either that or because Shizu didn't do more to stop the ship country people from returning.

Most likely the former though, since in the novel, Shizu is about the only person she interacted during the story (the rest of the people ignored her, and the Tower people weren't even human).

For what I had read of the light novels, she seem to like those.

They have yet to meet again, unless you count "joke" chapter and Gakuen Kino. Though, Kino will probably forgets Shizu's name again.

It might be good for you to read The Ship Country in the original novel then, the anime cut out quite a lot of their interactions.
