At least my version from Amazon.co.jp didn't include an artbook.

Yeah, I read it. It's a good point. Buuuuut... Asakura's still there. And Asakura acting chummy with Nagato makes most people familiar with the novels think "Disappearance! Is it coming at last?!"

Seriously, I don't agree. KyoAni/Kadokawa know exactly what Nagato/Asakura acting chummy with each other in a picture means to the novel-reading fans. Also, Asakura isn't even showing up this year... unless we do get Disappearance before the end of the year. Kind of odd to use a secondary character that never shows up as a key part of a promotional image, doncha' think?

I'd like to point out that if I can point out a marketing ploy, it's clearly already stale.

Yeah, it's going to start yielding diminishing, and even possibly counter-productive, returns from here on out, I think.

You're being far too forgiving of this viral marketing, imo, Kogetsu.

What I'm saying is that this is deliberately playing on the fans' desire to see Disappearance. Which means that if it doesn't lead into Disappearance soon, it's cynical very underhanded marketing, not unlike a lawyer/politician being very deceptive with out flat-out lying perhaps; slying promising the voters what they really want, and then after elected switching to something far less that they can still shoe-horn in to barely fit a strained interpretation of that campaign promise.

And, even putting Disappearance completely aside... why the hell are they still using Asakura in promotional images? She doesn't even show up in the Super Driver opening, for crying out loud!

It's just their way of generating hype. Both Newtype and Famitsu are really good at doing this for both of their respective fields.

Anyway, when people talk about K-On and lazy animation it tends to bring back memories of this opening scene for episode 05 that I thought to record and put on youtube back when it aired:

I'm a tad confused but that's a fairly natural state for me. I've just recently began to look at the ratings for anime shows in Japan and, not surprisingly, all the series I like are well down the list but Haruhi doesn't show up at all. Does this mean that practically no one is watching it? And wouldn't that have a drastic effect on the sales of the DVDs you've been been talking about.

Ratings don't matter much unless it is aired in early evening. Anything airing near midnight have low viewership by default, including Haruhi.

Stuff that airs at 6, 7, 8pm etc, have a better link between ratings and popularity. For midnight shows, it is the DVD sales that determine popularity.
