Ploughed through EIGHT episodes in one sitting. WHOA it's been NEVER since a Gender-flipped Historical Epic anime has had me this compelled.
To the show's credit, it decides to be first and foremost a war drama that let's the fanservice to VERY occasionally be used as dressing of humorous comic relief, rather than do it the other way round (like Ikkitousen) and be an excuse for emotionally hollow smut with a dashing of history for flavor. Excellent overall as the series may be, I was merely entertained until the scene when Nobuna is forced to execute her own brother, but it was THAT scene where she broke down in tears and showed how a real teenager would react to killing their own family that the series really sold it for me. Once again, Itou Kanae's managed to become the emotional backbone of a series through another heartfelt, utterly-convincing tour-de-force performance that portrayed the vulnerability of the teenager's heart with complete realism and believability, much like her performance of Saten Ruiko in Railgun. This young lady once again shows why she is one of the best rising stars of the voice-acting industry. Sexy-awesome-and-cool though Katsuie may be, she is a role that really sells an actress of Nabatame Hitomi's caliber short. Other than fight, bounce (not that there's anything wrong with that) and get embarrassed once or twice, she is merely playin Kanu Unhou lite and not given much to do as a person. Though kudos to a performance of genuine and frightening rage when she is about to behead Nagahide for even contemplating marrying Nobuna off to playboy-bitch. And if Katsuie was a cardboard cutout of a warrior, Nagahide unfortunately is a cutout composed of nought by dry wit and one liners with no personal feeling; though her awesome "Women are NOT tools of conquest" declaration has me STILL respecting her even now. Goemon and Inuchiyo? What can I say, I'd like to take them both home with me if only their possee won't kick the living daylights out of me. Mitsuhide and her Lord the Viper are thus far the most multi-layered and intersting of the cast, constantly torn between personal feelings and obligations of national honor. Though I must say Mitsuhide of late can be SUCH a total bitch just to earn Nobuna's love and attention. Serves you right for bribing a victory after making such terrible food, missy!! Hanbei-chan? Move aside Shokatsuryo Koumei, I'll take THIS nice and sweet little genius' advice over your's any day!! Moshimoto.... Oh Gods Above, Noto Mamiko's angelically soft voice coupled with a traditional, demure Japanese lady's appearnce.... (FAINTS) Finally, am I the only one who's worried that Mitsuhide is going to "turn coat" just to get back at Monkey after the Takoyaki fisaco? Kobato-chan? You travelled through time!! Oh well no matter, still taking you home with me!!
