Honestly though, it is quite obvious that little sisters are better than older ones. Simply because the older one will either be an example you can't replicate in front of your parents, and they will bully you as the older sibling.

Malaysian Authorities Claim Nude Westerners Caused Earthquake

A months-long Southeast Asian backpack trip celebrating a university degree came to a halt in Malaysian police custody for two Canadian siblings who were part of a group of foreigners blamed for an earthquake that shook Mount Kinabalu Friday, according to Malaysian officials.

Danielle and Lindsey Petersen – 22 and 23 years old – were allegedly two of 10 tourists who stripped at the top of Mount Kinabalu on May 30 and are now being held in police custody with three others from the group, according to Malaysian officials, who say their actions disrespected the mountain and caused the earthquake. Officials are looking for five others who they say were of the party.

Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Joseph Pairin Kitingan ... said a special ritual would be conducted later to “appease the mountain spirit.”

Is this really what passes for explanations of geological events in Malaysia? Whether or not you think their actions were "disrespectful," does the Malaysian government really believe that earthquakes are caused by offended deities?

It's the deputy chief minister of Sabah who spoke about the foreign tourists' "disrespectful" conduct.

Malaysia is a federation of 13 states, and the government of each state is lead by a chief minister. So, what the deputy chief minister of Sabah said shouldn't be taken as the view of the "Malaysian government", but rather that of a relatively minor official from one of Malaysia's most rural (read backwards) states.

I don't know if the official truly believes the superstition, or if he's playing to his domestic audience. It's probably a bit of both.

In any case, the tourists' conduct was indeed disrespectful. I don't care if foreigners think that their way of life is superior to that of the countries they visit. The old adage applies: When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

To insist otherwise smacks of double standards and typical Western arrogance.

I could, for example, insist on calling African-Americans "nigger" when in the United States, and claim that to be my universal right of free speech. I don't think that would go down well with some Americans; I may not even survive long enough to take the flight out.
