Yeah, I didn't like how Alpha's voice got weird instead of the usual Lelouch-voice, I didn't quite mind the change in Alpha's design, but the hero killing off monsters definitely weirded me out....
I also didn't quite like the tone of 'kuitai', when I read the novels, I imagined a 'desperately wanting', sorta whispery voice, but Ono D just sounds like he's making a statement there.

Too bad the rest were equally bad but I can't possibly translate everything in a short span of time. And next week is going to cover 最終日? Does it mean they are again going to do one whole volume in one episode?? So what would episode 24 be??
大失敗だな!Zexcsめ!As well as whoever is the director and script writer... すげぇぇぇむかつく…!
Spoiler:
From the looks of it, 23 is going to be 最後の日 and 24 is entirely dedicated to 親友(and probably the epilogue). I actually don't mind this set up, they're bound to get SOMETHING right if they have an entire episode dedicated to a chapter....
I don't really like to nitpick since it's really a bother, but since you've asked...
Spoiler for reply:
Disclaimer if I remembered anything wrongly.
Firstly, what happened during that meeting was, Lucile wanted to stop Lieral from making away with Ryner's body. Lieral and Lucile first exchanged some kind of ancient spell attacks. For Lucile, it's power gained from the 1000 demons he made a contract (or rather devour) with. And actually here it already was mentioned in the novel, but the anime just skipped it.
Here, Lieral took out the "Divine Beast Destroyer(Shiparms)" relic, though I can't remember whether it really looked like an orb. This is a relic of Runa Empire, it's a WMD for destroying a beast that have killed a 100 gods, or something like that. This relic first sucks out all the surrounding light, which was actually supposed to make the sky dark first (again no such thing happened in the anime), and released
the collected light in some form of giant lightning, like a death ray, which can be used to level cities. What happened was that Lieral actually could not stop Lucile ( or didn't want to try - both of them are insubstantial by the way ), so he used this relic to fire the 'death ray' towards Sion to distract Lucile. Since Sion is an important puppet for Lucile, Lucile had to go and save him, giving time for Lieral to escape. And here Lucile showed how he change swords (effectively changing to
another demon's power) by making one disappear and a new one appear, and sever the light in one slash.
Spoiler for ep 22 Lieral vs Ferris done wrong:
1. there should be a lot more action, showing how overpowered Lieral is, the difference in strength. And he can cast spells that do not follow the conventional rules of magic, well rather, his magic is on a completely different level.
2. Ferris was flustered and confused, flustered and confused, I'm telling you, when Lieral kept saying "you like Ryner?", and so on. But in the anime, she just looked mildly annoyed.
3. Ferris's despair at how impossible it was to win, was downplayed. especially in the scene where she lost here sword to Lieral.
4. Ferris's pain and confusion at Ryner's apparent death was downplayed. Here, her mind is telling her to run, but her emotions overridden her logic, and she tried to fight Lieral unarmed.
some excerpts (courtesy of myself):
Magic.
That’s what the man had said.
It’s just magic.
Ferris squinted her eyes.
What did he meant by ‘it’s just magic’?
She had never seen anything like that before.
Even though Ryner could deploy his magic with an overwhelming speed, she was still able to disrupt him.
But for this fella, she had no clue as to what had happened. In other words, what he used was not ‘just magic’.
However, neither was it a Heroes’ Relic according to him.
...
...
... As he chanted some undecipherable words, the man-shape black piece of paper, which had disappeared with the sword earlier reappeared, and then split open.
At the same time.
Ferris’s sword appeared suddenly, and the man caught hold of it.
“Hoi. Your sword, I’ll be taking this~”
On saying that, the man turned the sword round.
That very scene.
“......”
Ferris felt despair welling up.
What was all that......
If that......
If that was not a Relic, but magic according to him...... then it seemed like it’s impossible to oppose him.
What he’s showing her right now could not have been possible in reality.
If he needed only a word to activate his magic, then no matter how fast she was, it would be activated before she reached him.
The chances of winning......
At that moment, the man smiled again.
“They’re zero, that is, your chances of winning.”
Once again, it was as if he had read her mind......
...
...
... The man lifted his hand.
And said.
One word.
“IZUCHI”
Instantly.
A magic inscription suddenly appeared before his hand, and a flash of lightning was unleashed.
“Wha.”
Ferris promptly dived to the side and dodged it.
Thereafter, the place where Ferris was at a moment ago exploded on being struck by lightning.
That place.
Ferris could only look at it with a stunned expression.
“............”
What, what the hell is he......
Impossible.
Something that should have been impossible had just happened.
The magic invoked by the man was one that Ferris was well familiar with.
It was Izuchi. A magic that Ryner used often.
Roland’s magic.
A magic that is invoked by drawing a magical inscription, followed by an incantation......
That guy used only one word to invoke it.
...
...
... “...... oh yeah. I almost forgot to tell you...... just a while ago...... I killed Ryner.”
The man said suddenly.
At those words.
Ferris,
“........................”
Said nothing.
Rather, she didn’t understand the man’s words.
Just now, what did this man say?
Nevertheless, the man continued.
“I stabbed a knife into his chest and killed him. Blood was spurting everywhere, and he had a pathetic look on his face.”
He said it in a pleased manner.
Then Ferris started,
“........................ liar......”
She said softly.
She couldn’t say anything else.
It couldn’t be so.
It couldn’t have been...... Ryner couldn’t have been killed so easily......
...
...
... Ferris said again,
“...... liar. You’re lying......”
“Nope. I’m not lying. Ryner’s dead. You should be well aware of that right?”
“........................”
Then.
Then...... her head...... went blank.
She did not know what was happening anymore.
What.
What was this guy saying?
Why.
My chest......
No way.
I don’t...... want something like that.
Something like that......
Ryner.
Ryner, no longer around......
Something like that......
“...... ah, arg...... argh............”
Confusion.
She lost her calm.
Her voice......
Her head hurt terribly.
Her tears......
“Oops, I made her cry.”
The man said jestingly.
And then, Ferris began,
“............ I’m going to kill you......”
“It’s impossible for you.”
“............you bastard, I’m going to kill you......”
“As I’ve said, that’s not possible. In the first place, what do you intend to do? Our strengths are way too different. You have no weapon. Your heart is in confusion. In your current state, what can you do to me? Aren’t you a child who can make proper judgements? When it’s time to run, you run...... that should be what he had taught you. Now, run. If you come after me now, it’s a suicidal act.”
Suicidal act.
That’s right.
It’ll be a suicidal act if I don’t get out of here.
If I don’t get out of here.
That was what she was taught.
But yet.
“............”
Ferris started running.
She ran towards the man unarmed.
She threw a punch.
“...... die!”
She yelled.
The man smiled again.
With a sad, and yet happy face.
He readily caught hold of Ferris’s hand. And punched her in the stomach,
“Ah......”
That was the only thing she utter.
...

Spoiler for ep 22 meeting with Alpha & Ilna, and the (Door/Gate) scene done wrong:
1. firstly, the monster in the anime, just didn't match the one I imagined when reading the novel, I mean it's supposed to be a beast like thing that has a humanoid shape, and it's supposed to have Alpha Stigma eyes, and some important dialogue that should provide background and foreshadowing missing.
And Alpha is red in color.... furthermore his voice should be the same voice that always speak to Ryner....
2. the meeting of Iluna and Ryner, and how Ilna was eaten, and the emotions of Ilna; she was actually afraid of being devoured, and Ryner had to leave her, it's a heart wrenching moment I'm telling you, and in the anime, it was like 'huh'? oh yeah, and because of a block in his head, whenever he hears the name of his Dad, Lieral, his head is supposed to be hurting, but he seems alright in the anime LOL
3. the Hero Ryner saw on touching the Door, was supposed to be killing beautiful women, aka Goddesses. moreover, his cries for help should be hardly decipherable, but in the anime, it was so obvious... here should start the foreshadowing of the Hero needing to devour the Demon based on what Ryner saw.
some excerpts (courtesy of myself):
In the sky.
The sky above.
There was a beast hanging.
“............”
Well, rather than a beast, it’s features might be closer to that of a human.
But that was nothing human.
It was evidently not a human being.
It had skin that was redder than blood.
And the eyes were even much redder.
In those eyes, were the vermillion five-pointed pentacles.
Sharp teeth.
Sharp claws.
And wings.
Everything was red.
A monster.
...
...
... << Fu, fufufu...... but this is pretty much a cliche thing...... is this how demons appear to you humans?...... fufu, haha...... not having known real demons, this is the sham that I was sealed in...... >>
Once again, it looked at Ryner with its vermillion pentacle eyes.
<< …... however, this is the end. If I devour you...... this Seal would be undone...... I am called Alpha. Everything is going according to the contract...... >>
At those words.
Ryner took a step backward.
“............ devour me? Ehh, uh-oh...... isn’t this indeed...... developing along a pretty bad direction?”
His face stiffened.
Hello, excuse me, where is this heading to eh?
Devour me to return to your original form?
What is this all about?
The Seal, Alpha, Contract, and there is still the Door, the Key...... I don’t get what’s going at all.
What the hell am I doing here?
What am I here for?
At that moment,
<< Disappear, Solver of All Equations >>
The monster extended its claws.
And it headed straight towards Ryner.
“Woah, seriously!? Wait...... aah shit, am I going to fight with such a monster?”
He started deploying his magic at high speed......
Deploying at a high speed......
“............”
Nothing!?
There was no glow and it seemed like his magic could not be activated.
“Uwah, why’s that?”
...
...
... For some reason, the black words surrounding Ryner just now, were coiled around the monster’s arm, and started constricting it.
While the monster grimaced in pain, it withdrew its arm.
<< You, you filth...... Ar, Artofaal?...... ku, kuku, ha ha, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha...... the curse of a lesser deity...... I’ve never thought I would need to guard against that...... >>
After saying that, the monster took its arm, now wrapped by the words,...... and bit into it.
<< Disappear, Artofa...... >>
But.
Its voice stopped there.
Since the monster’s head exploded all of a sudden.
...
...
... The monster bit into the woman’s head.
Blood flowing.
Red blood.
It was that red again.
That cursed red......
Ryner, having seen that,
“................................................. .......................”
He couldn’t move.
The woman was eaten by the monster right before him.
All this while, she was facing Ryner, smiling at him.
“...... I’m sorry...... we only have such a short amount of time together...... but, even so, I was happy...... I have to thank Lieral...... for keeping his promise to me...... the promise of letting me meet Ryner again.”
Ryner began,
“............ I’m going to save you now......”
The woman shook her head.
And she smiled again.
“...... I’ll...... be fine. That aside, you have to hurry. Before The Weaver of All Equations comes...... further up...... towards the door...... touch that door.”
...
...
... The devouring continued on.
The head, the head......
However, she stretched her remaining hand towards him.
“...... I wanted...... to touch you more. I wanted to tell you more...... about how much I love you. I wanted to be by your side...... and watch your growth......”
But.
Her voice...... stopped.
The whole head had been eaten up by the monster.
Only the hand was remaining.
“............”
Ryner,
“..................”
Could do nothing.
Except for holding that hand gently.
As he did that, her hand clasped Ryner’s hand, and he returned her grip firmly.
And with one of her fingers,
Go.
She commanded him.
...
...
... On saying that, the finger made a Go motion again.
“Alright, I understand...... so, I...... I’ll get going.”
Then.
He could tell that the finger was shaking.
It was again the Go signal......
This time round, the order was not as forceful as before.
For some reason, Ryner understood her feelings just by seeing that.
He knew what she was thinking.
Go...... Please don’t go...... Don’t leave me here alone......
Without thinking, Ryner clasped that hand.
As he did that, her hand held his, as if seeking for help.
That hand was shaking.
From fear, from loneliness......
I want to save her.
He wanted to save this woman.
That was what he thought.
I want to save her...... and return home with her...... don’t make such a sad face, let’s laugh together......
If we could do that, everything will definitely turn out fine.
That was what he felt.
But yet.
Once more, that hand thrust Ryner away.
Telling him to go.
The hand that was being devoured.
The hand that was shaking.
With that hand that was shaking from fear, she was telling him to go.
Then,
“............”
Then, Ryner,
“............ uu.”
Started running.
That was goodbye.
Leaving behind the woman who was being devoured...... Ryner moved forward.
“............ shit............ shit.”
He felt sick.
He was sick of himself.
...
...
... In the middle of that scene, there was a man holding a sword.
He had black armour.
Like trailing smoke in the wind, the form of the man clad in the strange armour kept changing.
He was crying.
Appearing to be greatly saddened by something, tears flowed non-stop from his eyes.
However, embedded within his eyes was not sadness.
A strong will.
A strong determination.
And he lifted his sword.
And thrust.
“............”
The first was a woman.
An extremely beautiful woman.
A dazzlingly beautiful divinity.
Goddess.
That’s right, she must be a goddess.
He killed that goddess.
While weeping, he killed the goddess.
One.
Two.
Three.
Four.
While killing, his tears dried up.
A smile floated on the man’s lips.
Five.
Six.
Seven.
Eight.
Blood, the scene was filled with blood.
Blood, the world was filled with blood.
That was all of the goddesses.
All of them in this world.
And everything ended.
The world had ended.
...
...
... But the man did not stop.
He continued killing.
Killing every single living being, every single world, he continued on, dirtying himself with blood.
The black and white scene was covered in black.
It was the colour of blood.
All this black was from the colour of blood.
And then he realized it.
The armour the man was wearing --- was not black.
It was.
It was...... armour made up of blood.
An armour of squirming blood.
The man continued weeping.
And cutting away with his sword.
...
...
... He was saying something.
While weeping, he wanted to say something.
“........................”
But nothing could be heard.
Nothing could be heard at all.
What is it?
What do you want to tell me?
Even though as he asked......
“........................”
His voice could not reach him.
The man was desperately calling out to him, but his voice could not reach him at all.
What is it?
What is it that you want to tell me so much?
Then,
“............ lp m........................ he........................ me..................please......”
Frantically.
While weeping.
The man was calling out.
But still, he could not be heard.
...
...
... “...... I want to...... devour you.”
And he swung his sword downwards.
Towards here.
At my head.
Instantly.
“............”
He saw it.
Ryner saw it.
The receiving end of the edge of the blade, was himself.
The figure of himself crying that he did not want to die.
The figure of himself being betrayed by someone he loved.
The figure of himself being killed by someone he trusted.
And then.
The figure of himself, desiring love, crying...... a figure that was no longer human, a grotesque looking figure ---
The figure of a demon.
Spoiler for Episode 22:
Ok, thank you very much Larethian. Before, I thought that light was supposed to cancel Lucile ability to teleport, so he went back to the castle. Yes, I thought the anime quite screwed the novel (but maybe it really can't be helped). Once again, thank you very much to people like you and Defade, we could understand what really happen in novel.
- Sion spit "yellow blood"... so he went to a place where he can meet his 2nd personality to make a choice..
- Wth happened in "Ryner's world" , the "thing" kinda reminds me "Angel" in Evangelion ... then Ryner's mom show herself then got eaten... , what's the "Door"...
- What kind of experiment is it ?.. the "guy" had a little cute girl voice...
This is probably the first time I've seen Ferris blush. She looks cute when she does. Well, I guess she wasn't expecting that Ryner would be next to her....in bed. Aw, how innocent.

So i wonder how Lieral and Lucile know each other, it seams that they both have crazy powers, so going through a special door makes someone a hero, i wonder how Sion knows Lieral also, seems like Ryner doesn't recognize him for some reason, i wonder what Sion coughed up, it wasn't blood, but it could be an after-effect of consuming that hero or was it a demon?, i knew Ryner wouldn't die, Ferris crying really showed her feelings, is Lieral a ghost or something, she cut right through him, so Ryner and Sion battling them inner selves was interesting, how come Ryner didn't recognize his mother either, so is she really dead now or did she die before, like how did she get into his head, so Ryner is now a hero i'm guessing from the mark on his chest, Ferris's reaction in the morning was priceless, so Sion plans to kill Ryner now, Sion has become the villain, how did Riphal know about all that, surprised he let Kiefer go after Ryner, but he did say to return to him, maybe he's not so bad, well Gastark is on the move again, so next i think a fight with Sion maybe, can't wait to see Ryner's new skills, so is everyone that is powered up a hero as well
I love episode 22. It had so much emotion in it with Ferris and what appears to be Ryner's mother. The plot really has thicken, although the pace was a little fast.
I love this story. There are parts where I am a little confused, like why his mother was in this conscious, and why did she need to be devoured? It would have been nice if they explained things a little clearer. However, this episode at least made a lot more sense than the last one.
i honestly can't see them ending this with the way everything has been developed in the last few episodes. we'll have to see what they do with the last two episodes because that is usually the breaking point of raping the plot to ensure another adaption won't happen. heck, i'm up for them to continue it in movies like the Break Blade anime adaption is currently being handled.
also larethian, thanks for translating the chapter episode 22 was adapted from. it made so much more sense. i can only guess ryner's father will fill in the blanks on how everthing came to be in the next two or three episodes.
There's a joke in the chinese fandom, that by the time Kiefer gets to Roland by foot, the sequel will have an anime adaptation. XD

Spoiler:
The anime didn't really make it clear, but by this point the readers should know that Ryner doesn't have any memories before was five. Remember that flashback of young Ryner standing in a battlefield of sorts waaaaaaay back in...some episode? That was his first memory. He literally remembers nothing but his name, so he feels a vague sense of familiarity with Lieral and his mother, but can't really recognize them.
Also, Sion was definitely coughing up blood. That much was stated in the novel. Golden blood.
Damn this is getting really weird. They're throwing up new plot elements like crazy and I'm barely able to register them all.
that's why this is the set-up for the story in the sequel. though having read some of the short stories in LOLH Anyway, I think they should made this longer and included some LOLH Anyway stories to set-up the stage. When I first read LOLH, there are also tons of things I don't comprehend completley which are explained in the short stories.
oh yeah, they also missed out the talisman on Ferris's sword after she woke up, which she believed was from the Dango God , when it was actually something from Lieral.

I kinda feels that it's rushed...
indeed it was rushed. but did you read my post above? the "door", for now, serves to show Ryner some history of this world. unfortunately because of the presentation in the anime, it's insufficient information to put together who the warrior was. but in the novel, you would have been able to make some associations.

interestingly, all your questions are good questions and will be mostly answered in the sequel.

the emotion is nothing compared to the novel. it's not so much as in she needs to be devoured; but rather the beast wants to devour Ryner, but it was stopped and restrained by Artofaal's curse which the mother carried (the stab from Lieral did the implant, a quick surgery lol). so the beast in order to break free and chase after Ryner, needed to eat up the mother. in this novel this didn't happen instantly, she was eaten little by little.

we shall wait and see and pray, though I still would like them to do some short stories, at least in OVA form or something. you're welcome, but just a small correction, what I translated was only a third of the episode.
-It feels like an episode for those watching and have yet to research on the background (or rather, don't wish to spoil everything for themselves). It feels like there were some answers to certain questions, such as some of the ominous things that are brewing in Roland. Big taboo breaker with a girl's voice obviously meant that she was mutated into something that horrible.
-One of the issues that many viewers face is probably the fact that the series seems to revolve around riddles, though that seems to be a predominant trait of fantasy shows - One starts out knowing almost nothing, but gains knowledge of each and every strange term or phrase. First there was the Alpha Stigma, the Cursed Eyes, then now it's the Fallen Black Hero and Weaver of all Equations as well as the Demon of Loneliness (or Lonely Demon Lord, whatever you want). More answers, yet more questions...The way this is going, there should be plans for a sequel.
-It is now apparent that there are two "Sion Astals" in Sion Astal himself. One is obviously himself, while the other....I deduce that the other could possibly be the Black Fallen Hero himself, the one that was probably 'sealed away' and behind the door Lucile allowed Sion to open.
-Ryner's family is a mystery in itself, but the words spoken by Lieral and Ryner's mother as well as the Demon (I assume that thing is the Demon, considering how Edea's words link up with the vision Ryner saw as he touched the gate) seems to confirm one thing:
The Demon, or at least part of him, is sealed in Ryner, and his mother is probably the sacrifice that keeps the Demon from devouring Ryner's consciousness completely.
It got me thinking that Lieral isn't as cold as he seems, evident from the earlier episode of the flashback for Ryner and when he spoke to Ferris. And the assumption that Ryner's mother had probably been a willing sacrifice...That jolted my emotional strings. For whatever reason that the Demon is in Ryner, however, will have to wait.
-Speaking of Ferris, it was one of the highlights of the episode. Her reactions were pretty good to watch and was a prime example that she is slowly feeling more emotions and changing after meeting Ryner. The blush on her face was really cute and innocent in a way too, though her method of attempting to hide her embarrassment isn't.
Speaking of which, I felt there were some parts where they did the transition of scenes pretty well, like when the 'thing' slashed down at Ryner, and it changed to a scene of carnage.
The preview has me all melancholic too, and probably as the title suggests Ryner (and Ferris) is (are) going to leave for good.
Thanks for the information, larethian. Seems like there's only so much the anime can show, though it's already pretty good IMO.
Defade has translated Sion Note 1 at Baka-Tsuki. I'm announcing it here since these "notes" came out together with the BD anime releases. It will shed some light on the background.
indeed it was rushed. but did you read my post above? the "door", for now, serves to show Ryner some history of this world. unfortunately because of the presentation in the anime, it's insufficient information to put together who the warrior was. but in the novel, you would have been able to make some associations.
Yes i read it but not all . Now i re-read it all and thanks , it makes more sense than the anime.... seriously , was it so hard to adapt this...
I think they focused too much on Sion's part which cut off a lot of Ferris vs. Ryner's dad part. It was so weird watching the fight end so quickly compare to the chapter 5 of the novel.

Yes, the fight between Lieral vs Lucile and Ferris, doesn't give impression that Lieral is an extraordinary magician (which actually his strong point), but only strong fighter (like Gastark siblings). But at the very least, I think many people like his 20s appearance rather than 40s like in the novel.
I agree on the general motion that the episode felt rushed, but seriously, we all should have known that the final episodes would end up being rushed based on the fact they were attempting to adapt 11 volumes of a LN in a 24 episode anime. Hell, if we were to give each volume 3 episodes (and that's rather low for some volumes), then we'd end up with 33 episodes. So, the current issues should come as no surprise.
I think they should have planned this out a lot better, but well, I can also guess it's also rather complicated nowdays when you don't know whether something is going to be successful or not. So, breaking away from the usual 25 episode format may be rather risky, especially when Denyūden is not THAT popular as a LN. Still, that doesn't change the fact they could have done a much better job.
Anyway, I also agree that, despite the need for this to be rushed, some scenes could have been delivered a lot better - especially Ferris vs Lieral and the scene with Ryner and the woman within his head. Alpha's design also came as a big WTF, since it didn't really resemble the appearance that was described in the LN.
