I may as well come right out to say it: I'm not particularly happy that the Bakemonogatari thread has now become a sub-forum.

My experience with sub-forums here, in general, is not very pleasant. They have the effect of splitting discussions arbitrarily along episodic lines, making it difficult to draw attention to themes and plotlines that run across an entire series.

Also, I find that sub-forums tend to generate more raving fanboyism than worthwhile analysis.

But that's just me being a snob, I guess. Still, there are definite benefits to the change. At least now, there will be no more excuse for novel spoilers in the Generic and Episode threads, and hopefully less whining about how the anime doesn't compare well against the novel, and so on.

And having a standalone Images thread is definitely a huge bonus.

In hindsight, though, I do marvel at the sudden burst in interest in this series. What was it about Episode 6, I wonder, that drew in the sudden influx of new admirers?

Whatever the reason, I hope it's sustainable. It would be a shame to see near-empty threads over the next few weeks.

ฺHave to blame that to Tsudere-chan.

I agree that it would really be a shame if many threads here are empty. Not to mention that no new episode until 21 August.

By the way, I've loved this anime since the first episode. And I hope it can maintain its quality till the end.

This thread alone has shown that there's a large amount of discussion to be had regarding many points from the series, and i have faith that they will be carried into the correct thread here in this sub-forum. It's just going to take a few days for things to get started.

Its kind of pricey but i would pay for it if my Japanese was decent enough to read it. If i keep with my progress i could probably attempt to sometime next year i hope. A friend told me about the novels a while ago and i have been disappointed since i couldnt read them but then the anime came out. I might buy them anyway and just slowly but surely read as i learn more nihongo.

Well some threads probably won't have much discussion, but that's a given with every sub-forum. The bonus is that posts in those threads don't get "lost in the crowd" either; people who have an interest in the particular subtopic can quickly find similar postings.

We're not particularly fond of dead sub-forums either. If we create a forum too early, and the interest and discussion is small, then we've essentially created wasted space. If we create it too late, we risk killing discussion by spreading it out too much as the series is winding down. Sometimes it is out of our control. For instance, we created a sub-forum for Sora Kake Girl, however the enthusiasm died out quickly as the subs slowed greatly, often 3-4 episodes behind the raws. There's really not much to discuss when you can't understand what is going on.

This risk is amplified and more difficult to assess with the 10-13 episode format. Most of these series feature a high initial interest and then lull in the middle before the climax. Bakemonogatari is jumping into the sub-forum territory with a slightly late start but there's still 9 episodes to go and we judged the discussion was strong and diverse enough to give it a shot. Worst case scenario is that there's still the general discussion thread to fall back on and we take the lessons learned from this to any future decisions about what earns a sub-forum and what does not.

Not to derail your discussion about the pros and cons of the subforum status, but I had a question about the series.

Did we establish whether Chupacabraragi has to suck others blood or if he has his own sucked by Shinobu in order to retain his powers?

You mean, Tsundere-chan and her stapler... (that line will forever be EPIC!)

but dayum... a subforum! This is the first time that a series that I've been following from Day 1 has actually gotten one, something I'm rather happy about

and now off to the other threads...

Ah darn it, a subforum. There goes the neighborhood. TinyRedLeaf pretty much summed up my thoughts on the subject. Well, let's hope for the best.

The OVAs were by Studio Deen, the series by JC Staff. SHAFT had nothing to do with Read or Die.

Also, Read or Die doesn't even have a subforum.
