Mr Say Yay man is kindda more mature than he looks...
-He never backs down from arguments -Latches to his believes about Gundams -Going against orders from people 10+ years older than him... -Keeping his cool even when his hair is shot -Pointing a gun at a high-authority person This guy is pure suicidal... which makes him an ideal main protagonist.

Ah, thank you. I think you're right to an extent. I'm wondering if there's more ways of characterizing Setsuna's double. For most of the season, I had thought that Marina would be Setsuna's double because of the imagery shown during the first OP sequence and their interactions. His monologue during the epilogue really does confirm this connection. However, Setsuna's self-given identity as Gundam really does make Graham his counter. It's a nice touch, because at some point, Setsuna will probably have to choose between one of those two or find a way to accommodate both. His hallucination with Marina telling him that it's okay not to fight certainly alludes to that.

yeah i love setsuna because he's just fucking insane. Something I havent seen from any protagonist in a long time. That alone makes him worthwhile to watch. I have no idea what this guy is doing! very unpredictable! -when dualing ali he tells the other pilot to get out of the cockpit and opens his own hatch and comes out. This made me fall in love with this character, bloody insane. -an attractive girl kisses him and he shruggs her off -incoherent gundam speech! I AM GUNDAM!! WE ARE GUNDAM!!! YOU ARE NOT GUNDAM!!! -telling others like graham and corner that they are warped (idealist speech) seriously this kid has so many issues I dont know where to begin. I seriously dont want to see him mature at all since he will be 4 yrs older in s2. |

I donno, I actually agree with Setsuna on his assesment of Graham in the last episode. Maybe it was the subs but what Graham was saying, that he lives to fight and doesn't give a damn what the world thinks almost reminds me of Ali. He live by his "fighter instinct" and it's that sort of impulse that causes some of the problems for the characters. Other characters like Alejandro may be motivated by greed, but Graham and Ali seem to be driven by something much more primitive and innate, though one certainly has more honor than the other.

Also, I'm sure they intended to market 00 in the US from the start, and a show with Crazy Jihad Gundam Boy as the hero is probably a risky property for uptight US networks even without mentioning Iraq by name. Setsuna's pretty unambiguously Kurdish - the writers even went through the trouble of researching Kurdish religion (which is distinct from mainstream Islam) and the Kurds' difficult history with neighboring ethnic groups/countries. It's not just a trivial detail... Setsuna's real-world cultural background explains a lot about his Gundam obsession. Not only does the O Gundam resemble the major angel in Kurdish religion, but that religion (Yazidism) allows normal humans to basically be reincarnated avatars of angels. "Becoming Gundam" has a much more spiritual, less insane meaning. |
