So anyway, pushing shaft drama aside for a second...

Can we actually expect any shogi in this? Actually stumbled on the manga a while back while searching for shogi manga to read but seemed like it had little to nothing to do with shogi from what little I read about it.

I'd say just as much as you could expect art from Honey and Clover, or baseball from Cross Game.

Haven't watched those but I'll take that to mean, little to nothing at best.

Thanks ;__;

That could not possibly be less true.

The answer is that Shogi in Sangatsu no Lion (at least IMHO) is more a setting than a genre. Of course there is Shogi, but we rarely go through the game mechanics and instead use those games as a vehicle to explore the characters psyche. The bottom line is that you shouldn't be expecting any Hikaru no Go from this in case that was your point of reference. They are both excellent series in different ways.

Oh, and really, if you are interested in this series you should definitely go and watch Honey and Clover. Same author, and arguably the best drama/comedy hybrid from the last decade. Plus the added bonus is that you'll have a good idea of what to expect from this series.

Shogi is a major factor in Sangatsu - that's my answer. It's a character drama first in the same way Adachi baseball series and Chihayafuru are, but shogi is very important. Many of the MC's rivals are significant characters, and the in-game strategy is given considerable weight. Umino works with a well-established shogi pro as an advisor on the series, so she takes it seriously.

Now, that's the manga. Whether that will still be true in a Shinbou-directed anime I obviously can't vouch for.

Oh god your acting like Shaft somehow butchers everything they touch. Are people really this out of touch with Shaft or has the meme gone too far.

Yeah that's the impression I got as well when a nibbled at the manga a bit. Technically Hikaru no Go is kind of the same. Only series like Akagi (and Saki a bit) actually use the actual events in the game as a driving force. And for Shogi even though supposedly its more popular then mahjong or baduk, we only really have Shion no Ō.

Oh well. Don't get me wrong I'll probably watch it or at least try it anyway. It looks like a good series.

Also thanks for the H&C recommendation, didn't realize that wasn't a pure drama.

Only someone with loyalty blinders on could deny that they take more liberties with source material than most studios. You can like that or not, but that it happens is pretty much indisputable. All I said was that I can't vouch for whether the changes they make in Sangatsu will include downplaying the importance of shogi in the series - maybe they will, maybe they won't.

Look at nisekoi and koufuku. Hell even MCA which I thought was shit had more author influence than most series. Shaft are known to have a great relationship with the author of the projects they are working with. Even to the point where they ask whether they can take liberties or not. With Dance in the Vampire Bund the author literally asked the studio to take an original ending and that ending was soo good it was incorporated in the manga.

Im not blind I just look at past trends. And looking at that I can tell we are going to get a good adaption. And if Shinbou is ACTUALLY going to direct this, which he hasnt directed in YEARS yes believe it or not he really hasnt done much directing, than thats all the most exciting.
