Here's my list of favourite anime from the past decade. It wasn't hard to come up with a Top 5 and as I reviewed them, I realised that they share many similarities. I guess they reveal my tastes more than anything else. Nevertheless, I personally think they're all very good anime which I'd recommend anyone to check out.

1) Twelve Kingdoms - Outstanding world building. I've read several fantasy books but I've never 'discovered' a world quite like this. Also, main character undergoes an incredible amount of character development, transforming from a whiny girl to a very mature person. Add to that fascinating discussions on political and moral philosophy from a very Confucian/Buddhist perspective, resulting in a profound story.

2) Mushishi - I loved the manga and I thought the anime was very well done. A lone character travelling across the breadth of Japan interacting with people who have been affected by 'Mushi', Ginko is a very fascinating person. The stories are also very deep and I re-visit them time and again and still find them fresh. They all explore profound themes such as life, death and loneliness. Anime and manga of the highest calibre!

3) Fantastic Children - Don't let the simplistic character designs delude you! A mystery story with several plot twists, this anime takes you on an extraordinary ride and keep you guessing. All the characters are profound and well fleshed out and the soundtrack is wonderful. This anime focuses on pure story-telling as it connects all the disparate plot threads into a cohesive whole.

4) Seirei No Moribito - Very anthropological in its approach, this anime introduces us to another unique world. The animation and music is top-notch and the characters and their dialogues/interactions are very deep. The relationship between the 2 main characters is also heart-warming while the side-players all shine in their respective roles. Here's hoping for a sequel!

5) Spirited Away - Yeah, I can't leave this one out of the list. Probably the first anime I watched and it stayed on my mind long after I left the theatre. I simply could not forget it! Beautiful music and detailed animation. Sen/Chihiro's development was outstanding and I loved the way she matured into this responsible, courageous young lady. Everyone's said this already but Miyazaki is amazing!

My favourite animes are all set in interesting fantasy worlds which are fleshed out beautifully. They all have noticable character development and deep/philosophical story-lines. I'm glad the last decade made so many good anime. Here's hoping the next decade has more such animes!

Only 5 series for a whole decade?? No way, thats impossible!!!

1 - Higurashi - Because if I not choose it Oyashiro-sama will punish me. Nanodeshu!!

2- Mai Hime - Because its epic. SO EPIC.

3 - Kanon 2006 - Because its beautiful, and Yuuichi is a cool male protagonist.

4 - Macross Frontier - Because it leave me criying tears of joy, like the little hopeless Macross Fanboy that I am.

5 - Kaleido Star - Because Sora is sugoi. I have a soft spot for this determinator.

The runners: Claymore, Clannad, Air TV, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Elfen Lied, Seto no Hanayome (NaGARsumi FTW!!!), Jungle wa Itsumo, Puni Puni Poemi (Nabeshin, Great Director Nabeshin FTW!!!), Haibane Renmei, Dokkoida!? and K-on! because, well, because I can.

Too many series! Too many!!!

1) ARIA series: just one of the most beautiful anime I've ever seen and just like the manga it's so easy going.

2) Ghost in The Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Cyberpunk at its best

3) MONSTER: best thriller anime ever?!

4) Clannad + After Story: One of the best comedy / drama shows that sucked me completely in just like Kanon2006.

5) 12 Kingdoms: One of the best Japanese lightnovels made into an anime, only sad thing it never got completed....guess I'll have to wait for Tokyopop to release the novel.

Sadly a top 5 was hard to make because there were alot of great anime the past 10 years but most of these are also in my top 10 fav anime of all time so ye ^^

TV-anime only:

1 Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya: Down to earth sci-fi with lovable characters. Unbreakable by hype, trolling, studio and fans, heck it survived the internet.

2 Eureka Seven: Best coming of age story in anime, great sound track

3 Rahxephon: Bones' grand sympfony

4 Seikai no Senki: Lafiel and Jinto, romance and classic space opera

5 Macross Frontier: A proper tribute to 25 years of Macross, solid plot and filled with clever plays on the rest of the franchise.

One Piece - it's been more than a decade but it's only getting better.
Naruto - for all the complaints it gets, the story is intriguing and the characters well thought-out
Fullmetal Alchemist:Brotherhood - my favorite piece of mystery
Gintama - has an epic feel about it that's hard to find
Spice and Wolf - a fun journey in an enchanting world

1. Spirited Away by Hayao Miyazaki.
2. Paprika by Satoshi Kon.

I don't really have any others that I would say, but those two movies were beautiful.
