There is never enough Sawa I initially thought there'd be 12 episodes, but at the conclusion of episode 11, it didn't feel that it would be possible to satisfactorily conclude the series in one episode. Thus, 13 episodes feels a little more flexible in terms of story-telling

Episode 12 was a nice episode, but it felt a bit too perfunctory to me. It felt a bit too smooth, and expected.
Don't get me wrong - It was an enjoyable episode, and it had that distinctive Tari Tari touch to it (i.e. lots of nice little life lessons conveyed with a few key lines during mostly subtle scenes). But there was nothing even slightly surprising to it. Unlike with Episode 11, I never felt like Episode 12 gave me much to talk about or speculate on. I also have to admit that I am disappointed that it seems like the guys really are playing frogs. That made for a nice joke an episode ago, but it's going to seem a bit lame to me (and even pretty insulting to the guys) if the girls all get to dress up as cool fantasy-heroines and the guys are stuck as frogs... I suppose the most interesting thing might be that our five heroes are finally going to have their showdown with the Big Bad Businessman, if the Episode 13 preview is any indication.

たりたり♪♪ 12 - School Utopia Konatsu Straight
Okay, so they don't have the Madoka Kyono-level power and karma required to stop the school from shutting down. (A part of me still wishes they did.) But Konatsu's pretty close to that level. Her speeches throughout the episode were pretty inspiring, and the way the principal repeated them towards the end was powerful. The construction executive guy isn't exactly twirling his mustache, but he isn't being presented in a favorable light either. Also liked seeing that Sawa's dad is still as gung-ho as he ever was, only this time he and Sawa were on the same side from the very start. The scene with Wakana was good, she's come a long way. I don't mind Taichi asking for help from both clubs - for one, it has the net effect of bringing more people into the fold of "help the festival happen, come hell or high water." And if he can't draw or sew, it doesn't hurt to ask the help of someone who can. Even Konatsu's doing that with her pianissimo. I have to give Wien props. The Music Album tracklist did sort of reveal a few things about the finale, but it didn't spoil too much. I'm looking forward to this show taking things out on the cutest, most heartwarming note possible. If it plays with my emotions, then it's accomplished its job, has it not? |

Like you wrote, he's not exactly twirling his mustache, but he's certainly coming across as pretty cold and lacking in sympathy for others. This makes him work as somebody who feels real, and not as an over-the-top villain that while being more entertaining would perhaps also be less effective thematically because of the lack of realism. My hope is that the businessman will represent a sort of final philosophical challenge to our heroes - I think he'll represent the cold, practical cynicism of the upper echelons of the adult world, and the obvious idealism of our five heroes are going to have to face that next episode. It'll be interesting to see how that resolves itself - Hopefully, there will be an inspirational note sounded there.

That's such an understatement. She's pretty much the embodiment of the show's central theme now.
On that note, I loved what she said at the graveyard: "I wrote the song together with you and my friends. It is my treasure. A treasure that ties everything together."

I could hardly imagine someone feeling less real than the Chairman. He's completely over-the-top, every cliché in the book. But hey - that's Tari Tari to the bone. Sometimes I wonder if this is an anime or a Christmas pantomime.
