Umm, Fairy Tail was a top 5 or top 10 selling series in Japan for the last several years. It's well known and popular outside of Japan, enough for the author to have gone to several overseas conventions over the last several years.

It doesn't have much in the way of shipping wars because the author has set up some pretty obvious pairings for the secondary characters. Meanwhile the Nalu vs Nali thing lacks fuel from the series itself. No crushes, requited or unrequited from the main character, or directed to the main character, no love triangles set up, no character trying to get the main character's affections, or the main character trying to get someone's affections.

Naturally that doesn't stop all shipping wars but it certainly cuts down on it.
