You're not alone if that can make you feel better
The hair style of the boy reminded me of Yuki's. Could be a red herring though.

Also, Hattori has a picture on his desk of a woman who was blurred out, but who's silhouette seemed similar to Tohru's mom perhaps? Did I miss something or do we still not know who Tohru's dad is, or what happened to him? Also that flashback that the grandpa had with Tohru's mom and a guy a few episodes ago, the guy looked similar to Hattori as well. Perhaps it's not Hattori himself, but maybe a relation. It would be interesting to find out that Tohru is somehow related to the Somas.

That was a great episode. Hatori wasn't at all like I expected, in every way possible. He's genuinely nice guy who was only looking out for Tohru, and who underwent quite the tragedy. The more we found out about his past relationship with his girlfriend, the more I was wishing he'd be able to reunite with her again by the end of the series; but my hopes were quickly dashed. That he's able to be happy for her from the bottom of his heart proves once again he's a great guy.

The other thing that shocked me was his animal. It was pretty much impossible to guess

Akito probably has her own sob story, most likely related to the curse they were talking about, but she seems to be quite the bitch regardless.

I thought they were all going to be the twelve members of the Chinese zodiac, not just random animals. Apparently they're pretty hardy in their transformed versions given his comment about the bath to Tohru.

This was one of the best episodes so far. The Hatori and Kana story was touching, and he's an appealing character on his own.

Well, Kyou's animal is already proof that the transformations aren't limited to the "inside" animals.

Well that Souma looks so much bigger in the 2019 then the original it looks like a millionaire gated community

This was definitely a contender for the best episode yet for me. While the fact that Hatori did have a kind side underneath wasn't surprising, his story was still touching.

His animal was quite a surprise.

Actually what it put me in mind of was a massive temple complex - a main temple with precincts containing a myriad of smaller subtemples and lodgings. They used to be all over Japan but there are only a few that large still around.

Hattori may be brusque and come off a little cold, but deep down he's truly a nice person who cares for others in his own way .

So Hattori is the drago...I mean, the seahorse. I guess it would be even more impractical (and not as funny) if Hattori was his exact Zodiac animal .

It was nice to see Hattori and Kana's love story, despite how tragically it ended. They truly made each other happy, and Kana was the Spring to the Winter in Hattori's heart. It's just too bad Akito had to mess it all up .

I guess it does beg the question how much physical intimacy the Sohma's can get away with regarding the opposite sex. Like, they can hold hands, does that mean kissing is fine? Or does it depend on how deep the kiss is? And obviously that rules out anything more intimate then that...

We get more insight into the Sohma family "curse." It's not all fun and games with animal transformations and trying to keep it a secret. Everything seems centered around Akito who...doesn't seem to take it well when one of the Zodiac falls in love, to say the least. Even if they find someone who is willing to love and accept them despite their Zodiac status, Akito won't allow it .

That pure look of hatred Akito threw at Tohru...it wouldn't surprise me if Akito only agreed to her living with Shigure and company just to prove the point that others will never except them .

It was nice to see Kana was able to find love again and someone to make her happy, since that's what Hattori wanted, even if it's sad to see that her time with the man she loved was taken away from her. I hope Hattori can find his own happiness as well .

It looked like a full-blown Japanese village .

It's not random. Sea horses are supposed to be baby dragons, according to some. I guess it was that or a carp...

Out of the problems with new VAs, Hatori's is definitely the most pronounced problem.
Someone said "It sounds like he is cursing them instead of blessing them" and I'm like, Hmm, yeah, that kinda describes his not-so-tragic-as-it-is-stiff voice.

Also, was Hatori's injury from the magical sniper mirror in the previous anime? I'm pretty sure Akito smashed his face with some item and then blamed Kana for it, which made his unreasonableness more unreasonable.

Yeah I also agree that Hattori's VA was quite stiff but then again that is his character. It was still a pretty powerful episode. I was rather impressed that Hattori's story managed to move me as much as it did despite not being given the full context of what kind of of power Akito holds over all the family members. If I were to guess I'd speculate that Akito is holding back the curse for the rest of family, hence why Akito is sick all the time.

the attitude between the older zodiacs versus the younger ones is interesting.
older ones are pretty much gave in to the family and rules mostly, while the younger ones are rebellious

I think Okitsu Kazuyuki is fine as Hatori. He was reflecting a character who sees himself as frozen and detached from the world. Okitsu is an extremely respected old-school seiyuu, and maybe that's part of the disconnect - the current style is obviously quite different where seiyuu are concerned.

My favorite parts of this episode were the subtle moments which suggest things about other characters, more so than the explicitly laid out Hatori-Kana storyline. But that was fine, too.

Is Okitsu really old school? I know he really got popular when he voiced old school characters (like Jonathan Joestar) but he doesn't seem "old school" like, say, Takehito Koyasu, Rikiya Koyama or Kazuhiko Inoue in my opinion.

Although I think the oldest seiyuu in this production are all, at most, 39 (Okitsu, Nakamura, Kugimiya, and Sakamoto) .

So I was completely wrong about the woman, and I'm both sad and happy about that, because the story we actually got just pissed me the f**k off. Was the episode trying to get me to like Hattori (which I do, but I still have my beef with him to, with how he handled the Hana thing)? Or just hate Akito's guts (which I really really do)?

At this point Akito is the freaking curse. Even if as someone else suggested she's been holding back the brunt of the curse from everyone else, and she just had a really bad moment there with Hattori and Hana, her lack of remorse for her actions is what really grinded my gears. I think the only thing that might make me dislike her less is to find out that the curse literally forces her to act that way.

I mean, he’s been a prominent seiyuu for almost 20 years. That makes him old-school in my book but we all have our own definitions...

Watched episode 1:

Recommended by a close friend. So forced myself to watch eventhough I don't watch these kinds of anime anymore. Anyway, it's a good start. This almost feels like the original episode 1 except more beautifully animated. Kyo still turns into kawaii orange neko. And damn you Yuki Sohma, I own 5 cat and kill all the rats in our garden.

Definitely the episode with her friends was heartwarming, but this one with Hattori got me. Such a sad story, and if it wasn't enough Kana lives or still works in the Soma "village" just as a constant reminder. The voice felt quite fitting for his characterization if you ask me, I quite liked it.
But, also reading the comments, I kinda get the feeling that I shouldn't be so compassionate toward this guy, he said himself that it was like his atonement, a karmic counterbalance. Erasing memories certainly doesn't help gaining liking points.
In any case whatever Akito's story is, I won't be as much as sympatetic with him. Even only for a matter order of exposition.

So the hat was of a kid who helped Tohru when she was young and got lost. Kyo was listening and the kid looked like Yuki. Considering Yuki lived in the village at that time it would be more likely kyo, but really it's almost a blind guess for now.

I really like some of the shots from episode 8

Also really love the character bonding too between Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo.

Hana-chan saves New Year. Yuki and Kyo really were huge idiots, there. Of course she wasn't going to be fine.

Shigure gloating after seeing Akito suffering was surprising. Not that I have any sympathy for Akito based on the info we've got on her so far.
