Not really, it actually gets some real story progres, we get 002 go mad to the point she chokes off Hiros erased memories back to the surface. There is some fighting but more of counter ballance to the things that happen to 002.

We got something about Hiro-002 partnership which couses some changes in Hiro...Ichigo overheared that in the corridor which might lead for her worring about him again.

Anyway slow but interesting episode.

I've essentially said what I'm about to say before in this thread to someone else, but I misinterpreted what that person's post was conveying at the time. We were both actually talking about someone like you, so I'll reiterate myself here:

Well be honest after the beach eps and until the last eps(not today)....i dont really understand what kind series that i watching...Sometimes i just think the mecha battle only just a fan service....and the actual story is about romance.....

^ With any story, the most important thing is almost always the characters. Even if its a "mecha show", it's the pilots who move the mecha and their story that's important. The mecha are essentially part of the setting. Monster of the week can get pretty boring pretty quickly. However, the writers are interweaving the development of the characters with the monster fights, to various degrees.

Why do the pilots fight? What are their feelings when they fight? Why do they have to fight at all? What are they fighting for? What makes them happy? What makes them sad or afraid? How do they change and/or grow?

Anyway, latest episode is quite interesting...

Wow, 02 is going off the deep end and fast. Apparently 02 has been through 100 or so stamen. It seems possible that this was actually intentional. It also seems that such a thing keeps her more human, rather than killing klaxosaurs. Since Hiro isn't "eaten", she's becoming more like a monster and I think Hiro is too. But somehow, 02 is the key to saving the world.

And surprise surprise (not), Hiro had met 02 when younger but had forgotten about it for some reason. I would bet mind erasure or memory loss from shock.

Just watched the episode. Here's my impressions of it:

Episode 12 Impressions

It was a good episode all around.
It was very heavy in information.
We got to find out more about the parasites and their life at Garden. We got to find out what happened to children who are pruned.

It was also very much a Hiro and Zero Two centric episode. Apparently he and Zero Two met once when they children and he started to remember it at the end of the episode. It's pretty much been confirmed that Hiro had his memories screwed with when he was younger, because he didn't remember that Mitsuru and him were in the same group at Garden.

Here's what I liked and disliked about it:

Positives:

• Liked that they changed the OP to reflect the partner changes.
• One of things that I enjoyed about was the so-far platonic/antagonistic relationship between the blonde guy from the iota squad and Ichigo. He was teasing her about the truth of Zero Two and I liked how Ichigo defended 02.
• The blushing scene was priceless.
• I was shocked that Zero Two had gone through 100 partners and that she needed them to keep her cravings in check.
• I did like Zero Two's wish. Zero two freak out happened much more towards the end than originally thought. Apparently her blue cell count is rising and she's gradually losing her humanity (desiring to kill more). Which is ironic because she desperately wants to become a human.

Negatives:

• I didn't like the music used in the Hiro-Zero Two talk at the lake since they pretty much used the same music throughout the episode.
• It was a super heavy episode, so some people might not like it.
• Miku and Zorome didn't really get a lot of lines in this episode.

Also, I don't like that new guy from the special unit 9's much. I think he knows Zero Two more than the others and is hiding something. In the meantime, I'm really curious about Zero Two's past now.

The way she keeps repeating herself of wanting to become human is rather disturbing...
Oh Hiro definitely knows Zero Two in the past based on the ending. I just want to see how they will present their background story.

It's not just him. Nana and Hachi seem to be keeping them well in the dark as well, even from generally known information.

Using the line from the screen shot, Hiro is almost certainly her "darling from back then" (ie someone critically important to her). Wanna bet that Hiro from that time gave her a nickname (which would sort-of explain why we've not seen it raised by him currently)? Anyway, I'm sure once Hiro regains his memories and 02 realises who Hiro was in the past she'll be able to calm down. I'm guessing that'll be the main reveal in the first half of the next episode.

Hmm. Here's a thought: what if 02 "sucked" something from Hiro back in the day? And because of that she became more human... and Hiro became weaker and the shock also caused memory loss...?

PS Was nice seeing Ichigo stand up for 02 against alpha-smug.

I though they gonna pull a reverse Valvrave’s consensual rape there, 02 never cared for the Hiro in the first place (though still more than her previous partners). She only show her affection for Hiro because she wanted him to be on her leash as he didn’t die right off piloting with her. Her premise of being human is that she can be with her original darling aka shota Hiro. It was kinda weird how she is so affectionate toward Hiro from the start, everything make sense now with the spider comparison. She probably act this way initially toward all potential partners until she kill them off when they are in their last breath.

it's actually amazing how many people are watching this (here and elsewhere) and missing the subtle stuff they've been sliding in for a bunch of eps now.

i love this information heavy episode. it gives everything that 02 has done a bit more perspective as well as elucidates what APE is pushing to do. it also does nothing to narrow down what future plot points they could move on to, which makes the second cour that much more exciting.

Did Goro say that it has only been around 6 months since they've left the Garden? Maybe I'm just being delusional, but we've only seen children so far. There haven't been any children that look anywhere near Squad 13's age besides the special unit. Do these kids go through some crazy growth spurts or what? lol

That's probably what happened (or something along that line).

There's also the possibility that the lab found out they met and they mind-wiped Hiro to preserve his status as a special test subject.

Considering how much emphasis is placed on Hiro's parasite potential as a child, the lab probably didn't want to dispose of a promising specimen.
Thus, they did the best they could to "decontaminate" Hiro of any physical or mental effects 02 had on him.
Unfortunately things didn't go as planned and they ended up screwing Hiro's ability to sync with other partners.

That said.......I like the 02 memory eating theory better, sounds way more engaging than scientists screwing up their experimental variables

P.S. Every episode I get increasingly worried that none of the kids will make it out of this alive.

I was under the impression they left the Garden at the age they are now and have only been away for 6 months.

I think 02 did have some real affection for Hiro but the problem was that he came into conflict with her ultimate goals. We don't know exactly what they are but it seems it involves becoming human and her "darling from back then". Until that point, Hiro had been helping 02 achieve her goals.

It seems obvious enough that once it turns out Hiro is in fact her "darling from back then" then Hiro will no longer be in conflict with her ultimate goals. It seems that 02 had the false belief that she had to become human and had to kill klaxosaurs to do that. If/when 02 sees Hiro as her "real" darling and believes him when he says she doesn't need to be human then her (current) conflicts will go away, perhaps. We'd also see a big change in her attitude towards him. Hiro's confession to 02 this episode seemed like it was meaningless but I think it'll have a big payoff in the next episode.

I don't think it's even that subtle. Well, some bits are more subtle than others. Basically, the writers are doing enough foreshadowing that there's a nice payoff for keeping your eyes open.

Actually, before the ep came out I was thinking "hmm, the Garden seems really cold from the preview and the opening scene with 02 seemed equally cold, so maybe it's related". Shame I didn't post it

New batch of kids is still being prepared, also we've seen the other squad before.
Also - we've been shown just one room. It's safe to assume they have more.

Damn, now I actually want to see a saurified Hiro. This episode was pretty interesting, providing us with a nice crossroad. The next episode can go all kinds of ways, but I think that Hiro remembering everything won't actually change the current situation. At least not initially.

I wonder if, regarding to the relation between Hiro and Zero Two, they aren't going for an Red Oni Blue Oni kind of symbolism.


There's something I don't understand. If Zero Two is the key to saving humanity, why is Hiro's transformation into Zero Two an issue? This would only make sense if Zero Two is somehow a perfect mix between Klaxosaur and Human, therefore the next evolutionary step or something like that. I wonder if this means that the children turn into Klaxosaurs, and thus some of those stamen are needed to maintain the precious balance within Zero Two?



I don't know why, but I feel like Ichigo is going to intervene in the next episode. Seeing Zero Two really freaked her out, and now that she thinks that Hiro is in danger she is likely going to move to protect him.

sion, it would seem you're right. 02 hit the upper limit on the line chart, whereas Hiro is above 80%. I'm looking forward to him hitting 100% next ep at the end of the cour.

Are you referring to the Japanese folk tale where a Red Oni wants to get along with humans but is struggling so the Blue Oni suggests creating a scenario where the Blue Oni attacks the humans and the Red Oni "saves" the humans and drives off the Blue Oni, so that the humans would feel grateful to the Red Oni...?

So basically, Red Oni = 02, Blue Oni = klaxosaurs.

We see 02 desperately searching through books and failing to find something. We see a flashback to Hiro and Ichigo discussing a book - it's probably the book that 02 wants. Perhaps Hiro had read the tale in the book and had told little 02 about it?

So in a sense, 02 is misunderstanding/misinterpreting the folk tale or doesn't quite remember it properly.
