Speaking off, I wonder if Norms actually becomes an adventurer, Rudy will take her along sometime, or if he'll instruct her to someone like Rujierudo; after all he was only sucessful because someone "big" was there.

However all published novels have editorial changes, as the author is alway assigned a publisher liaison editor, who will inevitably tweak the script to fit the layout of a book and also to make the language fit into whatever audience it deems to aim at. The only other obvious difference is the inclusion of illustration, which the web novel do not have. For organizational purposes, it was felt that a clear distinction between the published version and web original novels be explicit.

seem like they banned some country IP, how about try using Aol or VpnGate??
for different between WN and LN : - the story is toned down, the original content is more extreme, lesser usage of internet slang, you can find my(terribly version) translation of WN prologue in this forum and compare it with the one on Baka-tsuki |

Are you only basing it on the prologue? While I did see some few changes (explicit characterization of the protagonist) on the prologue compared to the webnovel, I didn't see where the story is toned down although I did skim it through. If anything I thought the text is richer in describing the Mushoku world in volume 2 compared to the webnovel.

That's kind of why I asked. So, there's gonna be the top part with the translations supposedly based off of the published books, then a separate section for the rest of the (yet unpublished) web novel that everyone was working on?
Just trying to figure it out. Went to go into the BT editor thing, and the whole section from v5 and on was gone. EDIT: Oh, found it. I didn't see that it was put into a section below requiring me to click [show]. Last edited by Skuizaan; 2014-07-28 at 01:03. Reason: cause I was blind. |

If SilentWolfie had translated from just the web novel, we'd have missed out on it. Otherwise, buying the LN is to show support for the author, I'm still not quite sure why he continues releasing new web volumes every month, maybe he plans to diverge the LN from the WN at some point?

I liked fuck nano as well but couldn't bring myself to translate it that way in light of the fact that she ends like everything in nano and no . It doesn't feel right to only leave nano after 'fuck' so I got rid of them altogether to avoid opening a can of worms.

But for those two it's their quirk.
I don't really remember seeing Pursena use female speech in a prevalent way (ending in things like desuwa, nowa, noyo, etc like say ariel or erinarize or lilia do) Just the occasional no/nano, and only at the end though. so more than Rinia's actual -nya speech impediment, it's mostly just her (Purusena's) way of doing the -dattebayo or -gero, since it appears to be the author either using a dog-inflection or giving her that linguistic quirk. Besides, [...Fuck!!] is ugly, [...fuck-nano.] is not Besides, at least that isn't as pervasive to the sentence as Rinia's speech is. Shall I cite a painful source? |

Also please don't say 'nihongo'. That's disgusting and we have a word for it in English - 'Japanese'. Quote:

I know. I saw it a few pages ago and I was replying to you since you were cool. That's the only reason I posted anything in the first place.
But there's no reason to leave nano behind only 'fuck'. Quite frankly she uses no behind everything (the 'na' is added in because of nominal words). If we did this with any kind of consistency (i.e. open the can of worms, and not just make a weeaboo exception here or there) it would end up as the following: 「ふぁー、眠いニャ」 "Faaa, I'm sleepynya." 「最近、暖かくなってきたの」 "Lately, it's become warmerno." (^ have decided to attach 'no' straight to the word, so noone confuses it as 'no', as in the English word for rejection or negation.) 「ボス、今度あちしの昼寝スポットを教えてあげるニャ」 "Boss, next time I'll show you achishi's nap placenya." (^ 'achishi' is a speech quirk. Only Rinia uses it. Corruption of 'atashi'.) 「え? 昼寝してるリニアさんにイタズラしていいんですか?」 "Eh? Is it okay if I feel you up then, Rinia-san desu ka?" (^ 'desu ka' to indicate that unlike his normal ore/plain-form combination, he's putting on airs and showing proper respect to the others as a kouhai) 「……ボスはエロいことしか考えてないのかニャ?」 "...Boss, don't you think about anything but perverted stuffnya?" 「師匠は人形のことを第一に考えておられる」 "Shishou thinks about dolls before anything." 「お前は口開くとややこしくなるから黙ってるの」 "Whenever omae opens omae's mouth, complicated stuff comes out so be quietno." (^'omae' indicates that she feels Zanoba is equal or below her. Best to leave it in else people feel unhappy that it clearly shows this in the 'nihongo' but not int he translation. Of course we could just make her tone more condescending to make up for it, but apparently that's still too vague. Best to leave it in, the same way I leave in 'no' and 'nano'.) 「ですが」 "Desu ga" (^however + polite form; is a speech tendency of Zanoba to speak politely. Must not get rid of the 'desu' or else this will not be conveyed. ) 「いいから肉でも買ってくるの」 "It's fine so go buy me meat and returnno." 「もうすぐ教師がくるニャ」 "The teacher is about to comenya." 「ダッシュなの」 "Dashnano" (^ because 'dash' is a noun, the na is added.) 「ますたー、ここはわたしが」 "MASUTAA, then WATASHI will-" (^she uses hiragana for words she doesn't know well.) 「じゃあ、僕が」 "Then, boku will-" (^ Rudeus always prefers 'boku' when speaking politely. It's arguably more polite/self-demeaning than 'watashi'; is a speech 'quirk' of his. Better leave it in.) 「ボスがいくくらいならあちしが行くニャ」 "If Boss is going to go, then I'll-" 「どうぞどうぞ」 "Douzo, douzo" (^ there are different ways of saying this, but he picked 'douzo douzo'. It may have some special significance, so to be safe I'll leave it in like the 'nihongo' does.) 「ニャ!?」 "Nya!?" Last edited by Dormouse; 2014-07-28 at 05:19. |

I personally hate the whole fuck-nano thing. I thought that was a mistranslation originally, but apparently it's not. However I didn't see the words fuck or nano once in that transcript you just posted. If that's because you did a more detailed job, then by all means, fix the rest of them like that. Fuck-nano just sounds bad to me.

Supplementary example with one of the most quirky (speechwise) characters in the cast. If we're doing Pursena, then we must do Elinalise and Eris by all means, since c'mon, who doesn't love 'desu wa'? swaa swaa~
「あら、ルーデウス……珍しいですわね。あなたからこちらに来るなんて」 "Ara, Rudeus... This is a rare desu wa ne. For anata to come to me." (^ use of anata here demonstrates that he's either her inferior, or someone very closer to her. Desu is her speech quirk; she prefers polite speech irrespective of their positions. Wa is a feminine ending; only she and Eris use it, so it's a speech quirk; shows that she's either well brought up, or particularly feminine (or at least feigns that). Ne is an indication that she is prompting for Rudeus to agree.) 「あら? そちらの方は?」 "Ara? Who might that kata be?" (^ She uses the more polite form for 'hito'. Again a speech quirk, as she is being more polite than the average character.) 「エリナリーゼさん。こちらはクリフ・グリモル。特別生で、一つ上の先輩です」 「ご紹介にあずかりました、クリフです」 "Elinalise-san, this is Cliff Grimoire. He's a Special Student, and one year above us desu." (-san left in to show their respective positions. From this, even without writing "Rudeus said", you can tell that Rudeus is speaking. ) "As introduced, I am Cliff."※ "I have been gointroducedmashita. Cliff desu." (go- is a polite prefix; shows that the speaker is clearly Cliff, as he is well broguht up and likes Elinalise. Also shows that he's the newcomer and the one being introduced. Also left in 'mashita' to show that this is -masu/polite form.) 「あらあら、これはどうもご丁寧に。エリナリーゼ・ドラゴンロードですわ。 それで、クリフさんはこのわたくしに、一体どんな御用ですの?」 「なんでも、エリナリーゼさんを紹介してほしいらしいので、連れてきました」 「はい、エリナリーゼさんのお美しいお顔は、いつも拝見していました! ぜひとも個人的なお付合いをお願いしたいのです!」 "Ara ara, doumo gocourteous of you. Elinalise Dragonroad desu wa. And so, what gobusiness might Cliff-san have with meno?" (^ Doumo is just something you add on to be polite. Her politeness is a speech quirk. Same deal with go- honorific and desu wa. she adds the feminine 'no' just like Pursena does. Again, a speech quirk.) "Nothing in particular; he wanted to be introduced to Elinalise-san, so I broughtmashita him along." (Left in 'mashita' to show that this is -masu/polite form; is used to demonstrate that the speaker is Rudeus due to respective positions.) "Hai. I always haiken your obeautiful oface mashita, Elinalise-san! Please odate me!"※ (Note: 'haiken' is a humble honorific for 'see. It's extremely, extremely humble. o- honorific left in to show his esteem for Elinalise's face and his respect for beauty.) EDIT: italicised the notes for ease of reading EDIT #2: Apologies. Forgot to add in the -mashita in final line. Hope this didn't confuse anyone who knew it was in the nihongo text. Last edited by Dormouse; 2014-07-28 at 05:25. |
