Doesn't matter. It's a warship, so compartmentalize the heck out of it so you can cut off damaged parts instead of sinking at the first mishap. Warships can be sent to the front line with huge, baffling design flaws. It's happened IRL. But the thing is, they either sink very fast, or get refitted to correct the flaw. The Federation has been at war with everyone for a while. A ship like that - whose weakness wasn't even a secret - should have been sunk by a vanship with a machine gun long ago.

To use the Death Star again... It's like, not only did the Empire circulate the plans for years, but the weakness isn't a single small hole that has to be hit with a torpedo at just the right angle. It's a target the size of the Sea of Tranquility, and a single laser hit anywhere on it will do the trick.

It's not like it has to be a vanship. I only used that example because it'd allow others to kill a ship without exposing their own. Some kind of airburst fuze would have done as well.

If you recall from season 1, claudia loop cycle's length relates to the final lift height.

This. As you pointed out you can almost see the various ages of their fleet ships based on things like this and they got caught at the turn of new tactics they never saw coming since the majority of the nations are still using battleships and every time we've seen them go up against a battleship nation like Turan, Nodos, etc. we can see the Ades Federation is the best. The non-battleship nations are ones they couldn't have seen coming unless they were the pioneers of vanship combat themselves but they weren't and didn't consider them a threat until recently. Anatoray-Disith wasn't on Earth yet since they've only been here for two years and the Silvius was a complete mystery to them until ep 8, Glacies is hidden behind isolation and the Sky Pirates, the first known force to even broach the idea didn't even exist until after Ades started the war (using these battleships since their ships had to come first) since they are really just refugees from the conquered/annexed nations (as revealed in ep3), and even then they are still relatively primitive at the new strategy being barely armed and with weak main ships and unarmed vanships.

Enough of a threat for them to put an armoured cupola around the whole thing. That would have provided some protection from horizontal attacks, but not from shells bursting overhead. I'm not arguing it's not a bad design, but they did have some consideration towards protection. With maneuvering ships exchanging long-range gunfire, it was probably thought a reasonable risk to take.

We go straight into the "flashback" 10 years ago at the Grand Race...

and one thing I take from it is that there's arguments about Exile. Fam's item with a Prester in it is pretty special it seems.

... and everybody we have really seen from Earth are at the Grand Race. Everybody.

I almost teared up a little when Farahnaz holds up Sara and we see the scenes of everybody on Earth across nations being happy and joyous. Turan, Ades, Glacies.

I can see where Lilliana might have some type of survivor's guilt and such.

Anyone else think we might see the house with all the wheat? Like... Claus's house or Tatiana's residence there? Maybe some ideas as to what happened to Claus and Lavi at least. Or maybe even just Dunya and Mullin.

Atamora looks so different from what he looks like when he's not piloting a vanship,(when he found Fam, skyfishing, anything else but vanship piloting) I almost didn't think it was him.

Also, I agree no one's saying it's a good design but as you say it's an understandable one for the time period (and no doubt likely compromises) of it's construction and what it was expected to go up against, plus the need to compromise in order to build around an existing non-customizable drive.

As you said it was attempted to be protected, and also note its quite small, from big battleships that fire at each other from long range which were mainly the only potent battle-ready aircraft. If we assume vanships aren't on the battlefield, if they took a hit from something powerful enough to really damage this section from battleship-level fire the hull and claudia drive is probably getting damaged so much that they are going down and if an enemy battleship got close enough to actually target this small section specifically with the relatively primitive almost manual targeting systems of non-Guild (and now probably Glacies) ships they'd probably be too close and getting mowed down by the Ades battleship's superior firepower and these aren't even their newest ships. Vanships (and ofcourse the cutting edge Silvius which combines lightweight speed with surprisingly potent experimental weaponry and vanship fighters, so it's pretty good at evading fire too and yet can still do damage as if it were a bigger battleship) throw a monkey wrench into this though ofcourse.

Yes, obviously it remains to be seen but I'm also pretty convinced there's a good chance we'll be seeing Claus and Lavie (Though I hope it's early enough where they can properly play a role in a natural fashion and be introduced to new viewers rather than in just the final battle or something like that), with multiple key characters returning and even more getting name dropped (like Sophia and Lucciola) and Anatoray taking up the mantle of trying to bring the other nations together in an alliance after conducting extensive reconnaissance (Sophia was apparently even at some of level of talking to Turan's late King according to Dio's line from back then where he was saying he got permission from both of them) I've become pretty confident Claus and Lavie (and probably Dunya and Mullin since they've been living with them) will arrive eventually as well especially with Alvis already making her appearance. I think like in the first series we will eventually take a visit further into Anatoray for more than just a few repairs in safe skies.

Perhaps to finalize the alliance with Glacies after Fam and the Silvius break the ice?

Maybe Claus and Lavie will be at the capital now since Alvis is being guarded by Vincent so I'm not sure we'll see them in their farm house based on the Hourglass manga I think they'll be more active just like Tatiana, however it would be kinda cool if we get a fly by of the house maybe on the way to the capital or something.

who may have died protecting Al in the future chapters of Hourglass. But again, if that is the case, we wouldn't see Al giving a sweet smile at Dio in episode 11.

Everything is so uncertain. I really wish they animate Hourglass instead of this.

Well, not really surprising given how this is a full-episode flashback, but seeing Fam, Giselle, and Milia as kids was something else... As was everyone else, literally, as many of the major players of the present day were at the Grand Race in one function or another. And it looks like Fam and Milia had a very brief encounter as kids. Hmm.... Also I think we have some even more evidence that Fam herself (via the medal she had) has SOME connection to either the Guild or one of the Exiles.

Why was I not surprised that Sorush was eyeing the girls from the Glacies contingent (who were wearing, I might add, modern miniskirts)? Or the fact that Luscinia couldn't even force himself to smile while he was the previous Augusta's bodyguard (the man must have had a lot of practice since then)?

And Haruhi, talk about disaster dominoes. Ades made enemies, and they wanted to make a grand show of killing off the head of the country where there were countless witnesses. Sheesh. And now we know why Liliana might sympathize with Luscinia's rather heavy-handed methods of uniting the world. Honestly, despite being Guilders, I don't think there was ANY real way for both Luscinia and Alauda to defend Farafnaz, and what was worse they were in the open with no real escape.

It looks like aside from a look at Glacies, we'll also be visiting the Valca homestead. Oooh.

This is the bigger story and I'm loving it I wouldn't want to choose, gimme both. Wouldn't mind if they animate the Hourglass manga and it's inbetween S1 and S2 story later so we can get the whole thing animated!

I think this show has made a nice concerted effort toward connecting both seasons' characters and there's the new Hourglass manga, so I'm almost at the point where I'd be surprised if Claus and Lavie don't show up.

Couldn't resist skimming through the raw think I'm going to like this, looks like some good buildup and the big moments.

Man you're right, it's great seeing how many prominent players were there, what was going on, and more of Fam, Giselle, Liliana, Milla and Luscinia's past, and ofcourse the big turning point and as feels right it's very human.

Oh man Glacies and that wheat field, this looks to be yet another packed episode, and indeed we've got Al and Dio as the two prominents in the preview and that Guild guy looks most definitely like the guy from the Hourglass manga.
