Then the master would need to be reasonably powerful enough to have a familiar of a certain kind, etc. etc.

It does somewhat gives you more chances of having a powerful familiar without having to crank up the power of the mage with the familiar too much. :3

Hmmm a summoner... That's another logical sounding idea. Freid didn't seem to be 'operating', so to say, on the same rules a familiar operates on.

Fate had already made Arf before S1, at this stage Keroko would have no problem with that.

I myself will probably be aiming for the familiar line, and get the power out of their teamwork. Asuming I can fine-tune the idea enough to get it to my liking, otherwise I might drop the entire thing.

I'm kinda tossing around a "beastmaster" type character myself here, although she's not your typical summoner or familiar-user. It was a really cool idea when I came up with it, but as usual it's a bear putting it on paper and still getting the original concept across. Might have it ready late tonight, might be a day or two from now.

Princess Maker 4 (avaliable for PC, PS2 and PSP), art done by Naoto Tenhiro (who did the art for Sister Princess).

Basically, you raise your 'daughter' to be a...Princess, hence the game's name
Though, she can be other things, even the boss of an underground organization
It's all down to how well you raise her.

And it's not an eroge, I played it so I know.
It did, however, warm my heart as I played it and watcher her grow

Well...unfortunately the only translation patch so far, is for GUI, found here
But that alone is quite helpful, since you know which stat is what and where you're going (I only found that patch recently, I had to play the game 100% in japanese )

I always like to make her a kickass fighter/mage so she can wipe out the competition in the Harvest Festival each year

Oh, and if I'm not mistaken, Dragnfly wrote a review on it at gamefaqs...who I assume is the same one that lurks around the AS forums too

[Saint Church - Cafeteria]

Lunch, everyone is eating and chatting about.
As usual, Koji ate with Yui, Maren and Treize, but now with Altea tagging along.

"ne, Hayate-chan...Did something happen to them?" Nanoha asked.
"Yui's prank backfired." She forced a smile.
"Oh...but when they do, it doesn't have this result..." Nanoha looked at them.
"I don't know the details, but it seems today's prank couldn't be finished in time..." Hayate said.
"Should we talk to them?" Fate asked.
"Hmm...I think it's best to leave them alone for a while, they may just solve the problem themselves." Hayate advised.
Nanoha and Fate nodded.

Meanwhile, Treize was eating like nothing happened, but for the other four...they ate slowly, not speaking at all.
Koji and Maren's eyes met, hints of red could be seen on their faces, then looked away.
Then, Yui mustered enough courage to speak...
"O-Onii-chan!" She raised her head.
He glanced at Yui, then returned to his plate, "...What?"
"ano..." She fidgeted. "g-gomen..." She lowered her head.
Not falling behind, Maren apologized as well, "M-Me too, I'm sorry."
"A-ah! I'm sorry for throwing things at you without fully understanding the situation!" Altea joined them.

Treize, who was sitting by Koji's side, turned to him, "Treize...sorry." and bowed slightly.
Seeing them all apologize like that, Koji sighed, "It can't be helped...fine, I forgive you..."
The girls sighed with relief.
"But." He said, "You better forget this event ever happened!" He pointed it out.
They nodded in reply.
"Good." He nodded, then in a relaxed way, "Let's finish eating then~" continued eating.
"Yes!" Maren and Yui said with a smile.

[13:19 MST]
[Saint Church - Courtyard]

After lunch, everyone stayed for a bit longer and chatted in the courtyard.
Until..."Oh, it's almost time to go..." Hayate said as she looked at the time.
"I see...then..." Carim got up from her chair, "Have a safe trip back." She bowed slightly.
"Have a safe trip." Schach said.
"See you next time, Knight 'Short-stuff'!" Colt grinned.
"ou!" Koji grinned back s he showed a thumbs up.
"Have a safe trip everyone." Mari bowed.

"Altea-san, we'll come visit, okay?" Caro said.
"Yes, we'll come visit again and play some more, right, Treize?" Erio turned to Treize.
"...un" She nodded.
"O-okay..." She said a bit sad.
"Al-chan!" Yui huggled her.
"O-oi! Don't get so close!" She said as she tried to escape Yui's grasp.

"We'll come visit whenever we can ~nee Maren-chan?" Yui said in a mellow voice as her cheek rubbed against Altea's.
Maren giggled, "Yes."
"I'll come visit you too." Koji smiled.
"Y-You don't need to come..." She looked away.
"I-I see..." Koji tittered.

"Let's go." Hayate said, everyone nodded and headed towards the exit.
As everyone walked, Altea looked at them go, took a few steps forward and shouted, "You better come visit me like you said or else I'll go get you myself, Storm Rider!!!"
Koji turned back and raised an arm, "Yeah! You can count on it!"
"Storm Rider, huh?" Signum paused, "It's a suitable title for you." she said as Koji caught up with them.
"Is that so?" Koji said a bit embarrassed, scratching his cheek.
"Hee...Looks like Al-chan also got attached to Onii-chan." Yui poked him.
"Hehehe..." Koji tittered. "At least now she can live a normal life instead of going to sleep."
Hayate nodded, "And Carim is happy too,she got a new playmate." She giggled.
"H-Hayate-senpai...don't make me regret what I did..." Koji sweatdropped.

Nanoha giggled and then said, "Forward Squad."
"Yes?" they said.
"When we get back to the Arthra, we'll be doing some training and then mock battle, understood?" She said.
"Yes mam!"
"Oh, and anyone is free to participate if they want to." She looked back at the ones behind her.
"Then, I'll join!" Yui raised her hand.
"Me too!" Koji raised his.
"Koji-kun?" Nanoha looked at him.
"Eh? Is something wrong?" He blinked.
"Onii-chan, isn't Air with Shari-nee, being upgraded?" Yui reminded him.
"Ah..." He tittered, "I forgot..."

Hayate giggled, "Really, you just became a knight but you're still your usual self."
Everyone giggled.

It's been a while since they got back to the Arthra, but the upgrade on Air was taking a while.
So Koji could only participate in training that didn't involve usage of a device, then watched from the sidelines, along with Treize.
But then Koji receive a message from Shari saying that he could come pick up Air.

[16:08 MST]
[Arthra - Lab Section]

Koji entered the room and saw Shari, Mariel and Rein waiting for him.
"Oh, Mariel-san and Rein too..." He said.
"I didn't have anything to do, so when I heard about it I stopped by to lend a hand." Mariel said.
"Rein too ~desu" She blushed, "Because Air-kun is Koji-sama and Rein's child~~"
"R-Rein, please don't say wierd things" Koji sweatdropped.

"Anyway, the assimilation was completed smoothly and Air applied the design you approved." Shari said.
"I see. Then can I take Air for a test?" He asked.
"Well, there's still one thing left..."
"Eh? What is it?" Koji blinked.
Rein picked up Air and flew to Koji, "Air-kun wants a new name ~desu"
[Ja] it said.

"Hmm...It's a bit sudden." He started thinking. "Air...Spada?"
[...Nein]
"Something better ~desu" Rein advised.
"...Air Claymore?"
[...Nein] It refused again.
"...Air...gura..diusu...Air Gladius!" he said with enthusiasm.
[Ja!] Air agreed.
"It's settled!" Koji grabbed Air, "You're now called Air Gladius!" He grinned.
[Jawohl!]

"Air likes it." Shari smiled.
"Then, I'm going to head to the training room and give it a try!" He said.
"Rein'll go to ~desu!" Rein raised her hand.
Koji nodded, "Sure!"

As the two were leaving, Shari and Mariel waved at them, "Have fun~"

Koji walked down the hall, with Rein riding his left shoulder.
"ne, Rein..."
"Yes? ~desu" She looked at him.
"Thanks." He looked back at her.
Hearing him thank her with such a kind voice made her smile, "You're welcome ~desu"

Meanwhile...Maren was sort of lost.
"The lab section...hmm." Maren looked at the holographic map of Arthra she called.
"Koji-sama could have told me he was going to pick up his device..." She said to herself.
"It seems this path leads to the lab section." She followed the route displayed on the map with her finger.

She took that path and as she approached an intersection, she saw Koji walking on the other hall.
"Ko-ah..." She then saw Rein on his shoulder, the two were talking in a friendly way and also laughing.
"..." She stopped and didn't say anything else, just saw them go by before entering that hallway.
(That feeling again...Like the one I had this morning.) She brought a hand to her chest.

Koji entered the training room along with Rein, "Nanoha-senpai!" He said as h walked, showing Air.
"I see you got you device back, good." She smiled.
Koji nodded, then looked around, "Eh? Where's Maren?" He blinked.
"She's not with you?" Nanoha asked, Koji and Rein shook their heads.
"Maren-chan said she was going to get Onii-chan at the lab." Yui explained.
"We didn't see her ~desu" Rein said.
"Could have Maren-san gotten lost?" Caro wondered.
Koji sighed, "I'll go look for her then."

He turned around, and walked towards the door, it then opened and Maren entered the room.
"Ah..." Koji let out surprised. "Maren."
"Koji-sama..."
As he looked at her, he felt it, (Eh?) Koji said to himself, (Why is Maren sad?)
"I heard you were going to pick me up at the lab."
"Yes...but I got a bit lost."
"You could have told me, we would have gone together." He said.
"I'm sorry." She lowered her head.
"It's okay, at least you found your way back here." He grabbed her hand, "Anyway, let's train together."

"Onii-chan!" Yui complained, "You promissed you'd practice with me!" She reminded him.
"I-I did?" He tittered.
Yui pouted.
"A-Aah..." He remembered, "That's right..."
He turned to Maren, "I'm sorry, Maren. I forgot I promissed Yui I'd practice with her."
"It's okay..." She forced a smile, "I can wait..."
He walked a bit and turned to Maren, "Sorry." He said again.

"Onii-chan, hurry!" Yui complained.
"H-hai!" He quicked his pace.
(gomen ne, Maren-chan...) Yui said to herself.

Maren walked to the bench on the sidelines, and sat next to Treize, letting out a sigh.
Treize tilted her head and blinked, (...?)

"It's been a while since we had a mock battle, Onii-chan!" Yui smiled.
"Yeah!" He brought Air forward, "Let's go! Air Gladius!!"
[Jawohl!]
Everyone looked as Air took shape, though, the only parts that materialized were the hilt and cross-guard.
"a-are?" Yui blinked, "O-onii-chan...there's no blade..." She pointed at Air.
Koji smirked, "mada mada...Air! Schwert Ein!!"
[Jawohl!] It confirmed, forming a straight single-edged blade.
Koji assumed a battle stance, "I asked for a few more upgrades I thought of." Koji grinned, "Let's go, Yui!"
"Hai, Onii-chan!" Yui smiled, preparing to attack.

Maren watched them as they fought...
(Koji-sama...I...) she said as her hands clenched on her knees.

[23:11 MST]
[Arthra - Koji's room]

Night, after a tiring long day, Koji was preparing to go to sleep, when someone knocked at the door.
"Koji-sama...May I come in?" Maren's voice could be heard from the other side.
"Eh? Sure..." He replied.

The door opened and Maren came in...but because Koji was changing clothes, he wasn't paying attention.
"At this hour, I though you were already sleeping in Yui's room." He said.

But then when he turned to Maren...
"M-Maren!?" Koji fell back onto the bed as he saw her standing there, with her ears and tails out, wearing a maid's uniform and an embarrassed look on her face.
"Koji-sama..." She said shyly.
"W-What's wrong? W-Why are you wearing that?" He asked.
"I..." She paused, "I want Koji-sama to only look at me, so..." She hesitated.

"E-Eh?" He couldn't take his eyes off Maren as she walked towards him.
"I'll do anything you ask me to do..." She stopped in front of him and looked away, blushing."...anything..."
"Maren...are you aware of what you're saying?"
Maren nodded, "Yes...because...I love you." She looked at him in the eyes.

"Maren..." He got up and walked closer to her with a serious face.
Koji could feel it, she was uneasy, yet determined, but also desperate, (Maren...) He said to himself with a sad voice.
Maren leaned onto him, burying her face on his chest, "When I see you with someone else, my heart feels like it's being squeezed...I don't like this feeling."
Koji held her, "So the reason you did this..."
He felt her nod on his chest, "...Maren."
"Koji-sama's heart is racing..." She said.

Koji's hand began to slide down to her waist.
Maren closer her eyes and trembled as the hand slowly got lower and lower.
But then, (I need to control myself...or else) He said to himself.
"It's okay, Maren..." Koji said softly.
"eh?" She looked up at him.

Koji looked at her and saw the expression on her face, her eyes were filled with tears.
"You don't need to push yourself like that..." He smiled as he removed he tears from the corner of her eyes.
"But..."
"You're scared, aren't you? You can't hide it from me..." He remembered her.
"I'm sorry..." She lowered her head. "I tried but..."
Koji pet her on the head, "It's okay...there's no need to rush things." He tried to cheer her up.

Maren raised her head, "Koji-sama..." She looked at him with tremulous eyes.
He smiled, "That oath I made with you, I won't break it, I swear."
"I know...I know but, when I see you getting along with someone else, I..." She tried to explain.
"Get jealous...right?" He said.
"Jea...lous?" She blinked.
"You never felt if before?" Koji asked.
"I think I did...but it was such a long time ago that I forgot how it felt..." She gave it some thought.

Koji giggled, "Maren." He called her.
She looked at him, "Ye-mm?" But was interrupted by Koji's lips.
He held Maren tighter as he kissed her.
Like the other times, it was sweet and exciting, but was also different from the other times...Maren was surprised at first, but then mimicked him.
Breaking the kiss, Maren touched her lips while her face was red, "Y-your tongue..." She blushed even further.
"I-I'm sorry, was it bad?" He said worried.
She shook her head, "No...it was rather...overwhelming." She smiled.
"I see..." He sighed with relief.

"Koji-sama..." She looked a him in the eyes.
"Y-yes?"
"Can I...sleep here tonight?" She asked.
Koji stepped back, "Err...It's better that go back to Yui's room...tonight might be a bit..." He sweatdropped, (...dangerous...) He said to himself.
"I see..." She said disappointed, but recovered quickly, "Well then~" She bowed slightly and walked to the door.
"Good night, Maren." Koji said to her.
The door opened and Maren turned to him, "oyasumi nasai...goshujin-sama~" she said with a smile and left.

"......" Koji stood there, speechless, as the door closed.
He stayed like that until he felt something run down his nose, "Uwa!" He covered his nose.

Maren silently entered Yui and Treize's room, with the lights off.
It was dark, but Maren's golden eyes could be seen glowing soflty.
"Hmmm, Maren-chan..." Yui said as she heard Maren enter. She rubbed her eyes, "Did it work?"
"Not really..." Maren started taking off the maid uniform.
"Then all that work was for nothing?" Yui looked at Maren as she changed clothes.
Maren giggled, "Actually..." She turned to Yui, "This outcome was better." she smiled, touching her lips again.
"I see..." Yui replied in a drowzy voice as she tried to keep her eyes open.
Putting on her nightgown, Maren sat on the bed and began to remove the ribbons from her hair, "Koji-sama never ceases to amaze me." She blushed.
"Y-You can tell me the details tomorrow...too sleepy...good ni...zzz" She buried her head in her pillow and went back to sleep.
"Good night, Yui-san." Maren smiled and closed her eyes.
----------------------------

That's it for chapter 21
Some ups and downs for Maren, but they're getting closer and closer to that night

The next chapter will have some more Koji development, mostly about the ability he has ever since that incident
Also some (if not all) of the (good) Numbers will be in it, expect some Cinque x Koji moments
As well as Caro x Erio x Lutecia x Treize , Treize x Numbers too

Also, the "Koji and Scaglietti talk" I mentioned before will be in this next chapter.

Maren's insecurities was nicely brought up here. And Koji does a nice job of reassuring her, as well as being reminded he is a growing boy.Maid Maren and the now renamed Air-Gladius arguing with Koji was full of WIN and awesome. Nice chapter and looking forward to the next as well.

Considering his aura alone can kill, he's still pretty powerful.

Melikes. Though how did Neltharion ever get a daughter like her? Mixed blood or simply a disguise?

Uhm... yeah? Blaster Mode resulted in Nanoha taking permanent damage, forever weakening her magic by 8% A mode that would be more powerfull then Blaster Mode (vastly so, according to your words) would either seriously injure or kill the user.

That pretty resulted from too much beam spam at one go. As long as the output remains within a limit, there shouldn't have been such a serious repercussion. Still, the original effects are pretty much kept and worsened. If not, it can be used by something other than a mage.

and instantly, the once dormant overdrive engine began to spool up, opening 3 chambers. and in one motion of her left hand, she produced a belt full of what seemed to be...

"Cartridges..." Erio could only comment as he simply looked.

"Everything has been selected!!!" the goddess rang out as she began to take out a cartridge, full to the brim of what seemed to be white powder.

"Soul that professes Sacred Fury... Holy White!!!"

That went in a chamber.

"Soul that manifests Holy Sharpness... Divine Silver!!!"

The silver filled shell went into another chamber.

"And finally... the Soul that shows Divine Destruction... Sacred Pink!!!"

The final pink shell went in, and all three chamber doors closed, enabling the overdrive to spool up and powerup.

She aimed the gun, three barrels aimed at the sky, spell ribbons wrapping the device and user, with her divine white sigil capping the three muzzles.

"I summon thee... Excelion!!!"

Three lights shot out of the gun, white, silver-gray and pink, converging in a point in the sky, bringing out a brilliant light that almost blinded. and from it, emerged a grand, snakelike dragon, armored in silvery crystal scales, had three pink jewels for eyes and had wings of pinkish-white light, similar to the wings of Nanoha's device when the similarly named mode is in use.

"The Legendary Excelion..." Danaan softly spoke. "The dragon of holy light and wrath of Midchildan Lore... Caro, you can control it while it is there... for it is merely an emulation, though it has the strength and power of the real thing, it's mentality is blank, enabling someone with the affinity to control it... your ability to summon a dragon is a key to controlling it..."

[Saint Church - Cafeteria]

Lunch, everyone is eating and chatting about.
As usual, Koji ate with Yui, Maren and Treize, but now with Altea tagging along.

"ne, Hayate-chan...Did something happen to them?" Nanoha asked.
"Yui's prank backfired." She forced a smile.
"Oh...but when they do, it doesn't have this result..." Nanoha looked at them.
"I don't know the details, but it seems today's prank couldn't be finished in time..." Hayate said.
"Should we talk to them?" Fate asked.
"Hmm...I think it's best to leave them alone for a while, they may just solve the problem themselves." Hayate advised.
Nanoha and Fate nodded.

Meanwhile, Treize was eating like nothing happened, but for the other four...they ate slowly, not speaking at all.
Koji and Maren's eyes met, hints of red could be seen on their faces, then looked away.
Then, Yui mustered enough courage to speak...
"O-Onii-chan!" She raised her head.
He glanced at Yui, then returned to his plate, "...What?"
"ano..." She fidgeted. "g-gomen..." She lowered her head.
Not falling behind, Maren apologized as well, "M-Me too, I'm sorry."
"A-ah! I'm sorry for throwing things at you without fully understanding the situation!" Altea joined them.

Treize, who was sitting by Koji's side, turned to him, "Treize...sorry." and bowed slightly.
Seeing them all apologize like that, Koji sighed, "It can't be helped...fine, I forgive you..."
The girls sighed with relief.
"But." He said, "You better forget this event ever happened!" He pointed it out.
They nodded in reply.
"Good." He nodded, then in a relaxed way, "Let's finish eating then~" continued eating.
"Yes!" Maren and Yui said with a smile.

[Saint Church - Courtyard]

After lunch, everyone stayed for a bit longer and chatted in the courtyard.
Until..."Oh, it's almost time to go..." Hayate said as she looked at the time.
"I see...then..." Carim got up from her chair, "Have a safe trip back." She bowed slightly.
"Have a safe trip." Schach said.
"See you next time, Knight 'Short-stuff'!" Colt grinned.
"ou!" Koji grinned back s he showed a thumbs up.
"Have a safe trip everyone." Mari bowed.

"Altea-san, we'll come visit, okay?" Caro said.
"Yes, we'll come visit again and play some more, right, Treize?" Erio turned to Treize.
"...un" She nodded.
"O-okay..." She said a bit sad.
"Al-chan!" Yui huggled her.
"O-oi! Don't get so close!" She said as she tried to escape Yui's grasp.

"We'll come visit whenever we can ~nee Maren-chan?" Yui said in a mellow voice as her cheek rubbed against Altea's.
Maren giggled, "Yes."
"I'll come visit you too." Koji smiled.
"Y-You don't need to come..." She looked away.
"I-I see..." Koji tittered.

"Let's go." Hayate said, everyone nodded and headed towards the exit.
As everyone walked, Altea looked at them go, took a few steps forward and shouted, "You better come visit me like you said or else I'll go get you myself, Storm Rider!!!"
Koji turned back and raised an arm, "Yeah! You can count on it!"
"Storm Rider, huh?" Signum paused, "It's a suitable title for you." she said as Koji caught up with them.
"Is that so?" Koji said a bit embarrassed, scratching his cheek.
"Hee...Looks like Al-chan also got attached to Onii-chan." Yui poked him.
"Hehehe..." Koji tittered. "At least now she can live a normal life instead of going to sleep."
Hayate nodded, "And Carim is happy too,she got a new playmate." She giggled.
"H-Hayate-senpai...don't make me regret what I did..." Koji sweatdropped.

Nanoha giggled and then said, "Forward Squad."
"Yes?" they said.
"When we get back to the Arthra, we'll be doing some training and then mock battle, understood?" She said.
"Yes mam!"
"Oh, and anyone is free to participate if they want to." She looked back at the ones behind her.
"Then, I'll join!" Yui raised her hand.
"Me too!" Koji raised his.
"Koji-kun?" Nanoha looked at him.
"Eh? Is something wrong?" He blinked.
"Onii-chan, isn't Air with Shari-nee, being upgraded?" Yui reminded him.
"Ah..." He tittered, "I forgot..."

Hayate giggled, "Really, you just became a knight but you're still your usual self."
Everyone giggled.

It's been a while since they got back to the Arthra, but the upgrade on Air was taking a while.
So Koji could only participate in training that didn't involve usage of a device, then watched from the sidelines, along with Treize.
But then Koji receive a message from Shari saying that he could come pick up Air.

[16:08 MST]
[Arthra - Lab Section]

Koji entered the room and saw Shari, Mariel and Rein waiting for him.
"Oh, Mariel-san and Rein too..." He said.
"I didn't have anything to do, so when I heard about it I stopped by to lend a hand." Mariel said.
"Rein too ~desu" She blushed, "Because Air-kun is Koji-sama and Rein's child~~"
"R-Rein, please don't say wierd things" Koji sweatdropped.

"Anyway, the assimilation was completed smoothly and Air applied the design you approved." Shari said.
"I see. Then can I take Air for a test?" He asked.
"Well, there's still one thing left..."
"Eh? What is it?" Koji blinked.
Rein picked up Air and flew to Koji, "Air-kun wants a new name ~desu"
[Ja] it said.

"Hmm...It's a bit sudden." He started thinking. "Air...Spada?"
[...Nein]
"Something better ~desu" Rein advised.
"...Air Claymore?"
[...Nein] It refused again.
"...Air...gura..diusu...Air Gladius!" he said with enthusiasm.
[Ja!] Air agreed.
"It's settled!" Koji grabbed Air, "You're now called Air Gladius!" He grinned.
[Jawohl!]

"Air likes it." Shari smiled.
"Then, I'm going to head to the training room and give it a try!" He said.
"Rein'll go to ~desu!" Rein raised her hand.
Koji nodded, "Sure!"

As the two were leaving, Shari and Mariel waved at them, "Have fun~"

Koji walked down the hall, with Rein riding his left shoulder.
"ne, Rein..."
"Yes? ~desu" She looked at him.
"Thanks." He looked back at her.
Hearing him thank her with such a kind voice made her smile, "You're welcome ~desu"

Meanwhile...Maren was sort of lost.
"The lab section...hmm." Maren looked at the holographic map of Arthra she called.
"Koji-sama could have told me he was going to pick up his device..." She said to herself.
"It seems this path leads to the lab section." She followed the route displayed on the map with her finger.

She took that path and as she approached an intersection, she saw Koji walking on the other hall.
"Ko-ah..." She then saw Rein on his shoulder, the two were talking in a friendly way and also laughing.
"..." She stopped and didn't say anything else, just saw them go by before entering that hallway.
(That feeling again...Like the one I had this morning.) She brought a hand to her chest.

Koji entered the training room along with Rein, "Nanoha-senpai!" He said as h walked, showing Air.
"I see you got you device back, good." She smiled.
Koji nodded, then looked around, "Eh? Where's Maren?" He blinked.
"She's not with you?" Nanoha asked, Koji and Rein shook their heads.
"Maren-chan said she was going to get Onii-chan at the lab." Yui explained.
"We didn't see her ~desu" Rein said.
"Could have Maren-san gotten lost?" Caro wondered.
Koji sighed, "I'll go look for her then."

He turned around, and walked towards the door, it then opened and Maren entered the room.
"Ah..." Koji let out surprised. "Maren."
"Koji-sama..."
As he looked at her, he felt it, (Eh?) Koji said to himself, (Why is Maren sad?)
"I heard you were going to pick me up at the lab."
"Yes...but I got a bit lost."
"You could have told me, we would have gone together." He said.
"I'm sorry." She lowered her head.
"It's okay, at least you found your way back here." He grabbed her hand, "Anyway, let's train together."

"Onii-chan!" Yui complained, "You promissed you'd practice with me!" She reminded him.
"I-I did?" He tittered.
Yui pouted.
"A-Aah..." He remembered, "That's right..."
He turned to Maren, "I'm sorry, Maren. I forgot I promissed Yui I'd practice with her."
"It's okay..." She forced a smile, "I can wait..."
He walked a bit and turned to Maren, "Sorry." He said again.

"Onii-chan, hurry!" Yui complained.
"H-hai!" He quicked his pace.
(gomen ne, Maren-chan...) Yui said to herself.

Maren walked to the bench on the sidelines, and sat next to Treize, letting out a sigh.
Treize tilted her head and blinked, (...?)

"It's been a while since we had a mock battle, Onii-chan!" Yui smiled.
"Yeah!" He brought Air forward, "Let's go! Air Gladius!!"
[Jawohl!]
Everyone looked as Air took shape, though, the only parts that materialized were the hilt and cross-guard.
"a-are?" Yui blinked, "O-onii-chan...there's no blade..." She pointed at Air.
Koji smirked, "mada mada...Air! Schwert Ein!!"
[Jawohl!] It confirmed, forming a straight single-edged blade.
Koji assumed a battle stance, "I asked for a few more upgrades I thought of." Koji grinned, "Let's go, Yui!"
"Hai, Onii-chan!" Yui smiled, preparing to attack.

Maren watched them as they fought...
(Koji-sama...I...) she said as her hands clenched on her knees.

[Arthra - Koji's room]

Night, after a tiring long day, Koji was preparing to go to sleep, when someone knocked at the door.
"Koji-sama...May I come in?" Maren's voice could be heard from the other side.
"Eh? Sure..." He replied.

The door opened and Maren came in...but because Koji was changing clothes, he wasn't paying attention.
"At this hour, I though you were already sleeping in Yui's room." He said.

But then when he turned to Maren...
"M-Maren!?" Koji fell back onto the bed as he saw her standing there, with her ears and tails out, wearing a maid's uniform and an embarrassed look on her face.
"Koji-sama..." She said shyly.
"W-What's wrong? W-Why are you wearing that?" He asked.
"I..." She paused, "I want Koji-sama to only look at me, so..." She hesitated.

"E-Eh?" He couldn't take his eyes off Maren as she walked towards him.
"I'll do anything you ask me to do..." She stopped in front of him and looked away, blushing."...anything..."
"Maren...are you aware of what you're saying?"
Maren nodded, "Yes...because...I love you." She looked at him in the eyes.

"Maren..." He got up and walked closer to her with a serious face.
Koji could feel it, she was uneasy, yet determined, but also desperate, (Maren...) He said to himself with a sad voice.
Maren leaned onto him, burying her face on his chest, "When I see you with someone else, my heart feels like it's being squeezed...I don't like this feeling."
Koji held her, "So the reason you did this..."
He felt her nod on his chest, "...Maren."
"Koji-sama's heart is racing..." She said.

Koji's hand began to slide down to her waist.
Maren closer her eyes and trembled as the hand slowly got lower and lower.
But then, (I need to control myself...or else) He said to himself.
"It's okay, Maren..." Koji said softly.
"eh?" She looked up at him.

Koji looked at her and saw the expression on her face, her eyes were filled with tears.
"You don't need to push yourself like that..." He smiled as he removed he tears from the corner of her eyes.
"But..."
"You're scared, aren't you? You can't hide it from me..." He remembered her.
"I'm sorry..." She lowered her head. "I tried but..."
Koji pet her on the head, "It's okay...there's no need to rush things." He tried to cheer her up.

Maren raised her head, "Koji-sama..." She looked at him with tremulous eyes.
He smiled, "That oath I made with you, I won't break it, I swear."
"I know...I know but, when I see you getting along with someone else, I..." She tried to explain.
"Get jealous...right?" He said.
"Jea...lous?" She blinked.
"You never felt if before?" Koji asked.
"I think I did...but it was such a long time ago that I forgot how it felt..." She gave it some thought.

Koji giggled, "Maren." He called her.
She looked at him, "Ye-mm?" But was interrupted by Koji's lips.
He held Maren tighter as he kissed her.
Like the other times, it was sweet and exciting, but was also different from the other times...Maren was surprised at first, but then mimicked him.
Breaking the kiss, Maren touched her lips while her face was red, "Y-your tongue..." She blushed even further.
"I-I'm sorry, was it bad?" He said worried.
She shook her head, "No...it was rather...overwhelming." She smiled.
"I see..." He sighed with relief.

"Koji-sama..." She looked a him in the eyes.
"Y-yes?"
"Can I...sleep here tonight?" She asked.
Koji stepped back, "Err...It's better that go back to Yui's room...tonight might be a bit..." He sweatdropped, (...dangerous...) He said to himself.
"I see..." She said disappointed, but recovered quickly, "Well then~" She bowed slightly and walked to the door.
"Good night, Maren." Koji said to her.
The door opened and Maren turned to him, "oyasumi nasai...goshujin-sama~" she said with a smile and left.

"......" Koji stood there, speechless, as the door closed.
He stayed like that until he felt something run down his nose, "Uwa!" He covered his nose.

Maren silently entered Yui and Treize's room, with the lights off.
It was dark, but Maren's golden eyes could be seen glowing soflty.
"Hmmm, Maren-chan..." Yui said as she heard Maren enter. She rubbed her eyes, "Did it work?"
"Not really..." Maren started taking off the maid uniform.
"Then all that work was for nothing?" Yui looked at Maren as she changed clothes.
Maren giggled, "Actually..." She turned to Yui, "This outcome was better." she smiled, touching her lips again.
"I see..." Yui replied in a drowzy voice as she tried to keep her eyes open.
Putting on her nightgown, Maren sat on the bed and began to remove the ribbons from her hair, "Koji-sama never ceases to amaze me." She blushed.
"Y-You can tell me the details tomorrow...too sleepy...good ni...zzz" She buried her head in her pillow and went back to sleep.
"Good night, Yui-san." Maren smiled and closed her eyes.

That's it for chapter 21
Some ups and downs for Maren, but they're getting closer and closer to that night

The next chapter will have some more Koji development, mostly about the ability he has ever since that incident
Also some (if not all) of the (good) Numbers will be in it, expect some Cinque x Koji moments
As well as Caro x Erio x Lutecia x Treize , Treize x Numbers too

Also, the "Koji and Scaglietti talk" I mentioned before will be in this next chapter.

Aurion Dauer walked into the room Hayate had set aside for a one-on-one conversation with Commander Arcasaviel Emira, the Dragonslayer. The former Enforcer remembered the conversation which had lead to this moment.

[Flashback]

“Dauer-hakase, please! You’re the only one I know who could resolve this!”

“Mel, I’ve told Grandis, I’ve told Hayate, and now I’m telling you – the best way for resolution is to solve it amongst yourselves without outside help.”

“Arcas won’t LISTEN to any of us! He’s got it in his head that Gran-chan is no good for Hayate-chan, and he simply won’t let it go! Please, hakase, you’re the only one with the necessary training!”

Dauer sighed. “Is there really no other way?” Mel sighed in reply, then nodded.

“All right,” he replied, exhaling. “Have Hayate set it up.”

[End Flashback]

Dauer sat in one of the office chairs opposite Arcas.

“You know why you’re here?”

“Of course I know,” he snapped. “I’m here because I happen to have a difference of opinion about that bastard Lacetti.”

“‘Difference of opinion,’” Aurion repeated. “The last three times you’ve seen him, you have, and I quote, ‘gone after him like Vita on speed.’” The enforcer looked up from the clipboard. “Some difference of opinion.”

“I can explain that.”

“I’m listening.”

The Lord of Dunamists sighed. “I have to go to these extremes because it seems like no one else is interested in protecting Hayate.”

“Protecting her? From whom?”

“This time around, herself.”

“And why does she need protection from herself?”

“She’s deluding herself about Lacetti,” Arcas responded. “She thinks she’s in love with him.”

“And she’s not?”

“No! Look, she was a hostage, right? And Lacetti took care of her, yes?”

“That’s correct.”

“Now, I’m not the psych expert you are, but I know enough that’s there some sort of condition where hostages wind up falling in love with their captors.”

“Bauer Syndrome.”

“Yes!”

“But, the hostage is in love – you said so yourself.”

“It’s not real love! It’s love under extreme mental duress!”

“And you’re convinced that Hayate is suffering from it.”

“I am – and I seem to be the only one who is.”

“And that’s why she needs protection?”

“Yes – and since no one else seems interested, it’s all up to me. And let me tell you – I don’t enjoy playing the bad guy here.”

“What if you weren’t alone? What if someone else was willing to be the bad guy? Would you stop then?”

Arcas paused for a moment. “No.”

“Why not?”

“When Hayate got kidnapped, I wasn’t there to protect her.”

“Signum was – do you think you’re better than Signum?”

“No, but if it had been both of us there, rather than just one, the two of us could have prevented the kidnapping.”

“But you weren’t.”

“No, I wasn’t. But I’m here to protect her now, and that’s what I’m going to do.”

Aurion nodded. “I see. Could you excuse me for a moment?”

“Sure…”

He stepped out, and looked down the hall to see the Aces, Wolkenritter, Grandis, and Mel.

“So?” Nanoha asked. “Is it done?”

“Yes and no.”

“No – but he’s convinced himself that he does so that he can distract himself from the guilt he feels about not being there when Hayate was kidnapped.”

“So, what can we do?” Fate asked.

“Well, it’s not a question of what WE can do as much as…” Aurion’s head turned, and the rest followed.

“Me?” Hayate replied.

“In the end, it’s all about you. You’re the only one with the power to relieve Arcas of his guilt.”

The Mistress of the Night Sky exhaled. “Okay. What do I need to do?”

Hayate steeled herself, then stepped into the room. Arcas looked up.

“Where’s Dauer?”

“He says that he can’t do any more to help you.”

“But he thinks you can?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Oji-chan’s opinion is that you’re feeling guilty about not being there when I was kidnapped, and that your behavior now is a way of distracting yourself from that guilt.”

“And you have the ability to relieve this guilt.”

“Yes,” she responded.

Arcas shook his head. “I don’t believe it.”

“I do – and I want to tell you that I don’t blame you. What you did, you did so that you didn’t have to feel guilt over what happened.”

“That’s not true! What I did, I did for you! I did it so I could protect you this time!”

“And you don’t think I’m capable of protecting myself?”

“No!” Arcas realized what he said. “Yes! I mean, you CAN, but you won’t protect you from yourself!”

“Nii-san – I’m a grown-up girl now. I know what I’m getting into – I know that relationships come with potential heartbreak attached. I’ve accepted that, and if it happens, then I’ll deal with it.”

“Hayate…I…” The words of the Mistress of the Night Sky hit home with the force of a hundred Starlight Breakers. And then, the truth of the terrible thing he was doing dawned on him.

What have I done?

“Nii-san?” Hayate slowly moved towards him. She was two steps away from him when he jerked out of his trance.

“Hayate, stay away from me.”

“Nii-san, please. All I want is to show you that I forgive you.”

“No! Hayate, stay back! I don’t deserve forgiveness for what I’ve done!”

“Never!”

Then, in one brief second, a sound split the air.

Arcas had slapped Hayate. She took a step backwards, hand raised to her face.

“DAMMIT, HAYATE! Hate me! Hate me for what I’ve done! Hate me for trying to hurt the man you love! Hate me for trying to take away someone who makes you happy!” He slumped to his knees, head in hands. “Please…just hate me.”

Hayate drew in a breath, and let the words of her Oji-chan come back to her.

Whatever you do, don’t EVER say that you hate him. If you do, then he’ll never forgive himself, and things will just get worse.

She slowly knelt in front of the distraught Dragonslayer. “I can’t do that,” she answered.

“Why?”

Hayate smiled. “I could never hate my Nii-san.”

“Hayate…I’m NOT your Nii-san. I’m a horrible, horrible monster, who only wants you for himself.”

“Nn,” she replied. “Sou ja nai. Anata wa atashi no nii-san. Zutto.”

“No, I’m not.”

“Yes, you are. You’re not a monster, Nii-san. I gaze into those big, beautiful violet eyes, looking for the monster you say you are. But I don’t see him anywhere – all I see is my Nii-san, haunted by his own guilt, searching for release. I'll say it again: you are my Nii-san. My Nii-san, who is brave, and stands for what he believes in. My Nii-san, who is kind, and would never wantonly harm a girl. My Nii-san, who says the right thing, even when he doesn't know what to say. My Nii-san, who worries for others, and never for himself. You are as I remember you, my gentle, warmhearted Nii-san.”

“Hayate…I…” Arcas tried to think of something to say, but lost his train of thought when Hayate wrapped her arms around his torso, and pulled her body to his. He exhaled, then returned the embrace, arms around her shoulders.

“Nii-san. No matter who else comes and goes in my life, I’ll always love you.”

Outside, the others waited. Grandis turned to Mel.

“I can still love him, Gran-san, because I know he’s not like this. I know it’s a tired saying, but you don’t know him like I do. Arcas is someone who feels his responsibility and duties very much. They weigh heavily on him – a snap like this happens to even the best of us. Besides, Gran-san, everyone needs saving at some time. Even the strong – especially the strong. Because more often than not, the strong need saving not from another, but from themselves.”

What Mel said resounded with the former mercenary.

“I suppose you’re right – I haven’t known him for very long compared to the rest of you.”

“Don’t worry – Hayate-chan will sort this all out – and then you’ll be able to see the real Arcas. Although, he probably won’t warm up to you right away – got an image to maintain and all.”

Grandis opened his mouth to reply, but was interrupted by the sound of the door opening. Arcas and Hayate both emerged. All save Mel moved the short distance from where they had waited to the door.

“Is it over?” Fate asked.

“Yes,” Hayate responded. “It’s done.”

“And since it is, Mel and I need to be leaving,” Arcas spoke up.

He made his way through the crowd, briefly locking an eye with Grandis. Everyone turned to watch him walk to Mel, who wrapped an arm around his waist, looking up at him. The others observed their lips moving, but were unable to discern what was being said. Arcas exhaled, and then put an arm over Mel’s shoulders. They turned away, and began walking down the hall. Then, they stopped.

“Lacetti.”

It was the Lord of Dunamists.

“Treat her right – treat her like a lady.”

And then, they disappeared around a corner.

Grandis looked to Hayate. He smiled a lopsided smile, then raised his eyebrows.

“I guess that’s approval, huh?”

Hayate smiled, leaned into her boyfriend, and replied.

“As much as we can expect, for now.”

Outside, the Phantasms slid into the Phantasmobile, with Mel in the driver’s seat.

“No – but I will be. I just have to realize that Hayate’s not a little girl anymore; that she can make her own decisions – and take responsibility for the consequences.”

“But you will be okay?”

“Eventually. It’s never easy letting go the first time.”

“The first time? What about Nanoha-chan and Fate-chan?”

The Dragonslayer shook his head. “That’s different. From the first time I saw Nanoha with Yuuno, and Fate with Kha-sama, I knew. I knew that my time was limited – that I would never take that place in their hearts. With Hayate, it was different. When I met her, there was no one like that in her life – I guess somewhere along the way, the idea that there never would be a someone got stuck in my head, and I refused to give it up.” He looked to Mel. “And it’s not over, either.”

The Lady of Hope tilted her head. “What do you mean?”

“I’ve seen how Caro looks at Erio, and that even though Keroko doesn’t have a special someone yet, there’re enough guys in her life to make her start thinking about one.”

“There’s still Sophia.”

Arcas shook his head. “It’s not the same. She’s the head of a convent. Her special someone won’t be a single person – it’ll be the children there.” He paused. “Mel, am I being too selfish? Was it wrong of me to think that life would let me keep even one of my little sisters?”

Mel thought it over, trying to find the right words. “Yes and no. They’re always going to be involved in your life, so in that way, you still have them. But, you can’t expect to be the most important man in their life forever.”

“So I’m learning.”

“Don’t worry, Arc-chan,” she said, leaning in and briefly nipping his neck. “I’ll always be here.”

The Dragonslayer returned the sign of affection, nuzzling his beloved’s face. “I know.”

Their moment was interrupted by the chime of an incoming message. It was Himeya, the Delphinus’ AI.

“Himeya-san. What’s up?”

“You’re needed at DC HQ ASAP. There’s a difference of opinion over which squad gets which assignment.”

“‘Difference of opinion,’ huh?” Arcas replied.

“Yes. Did I miss something?”

“Nah. We’ll be right there.”

I'm not accepting any lower than that. If they want her to give her trouble processing mana, then give her an exorbitant amount of it! Nanoha and Fate have literally monstrous amounts of mana but look at their casting speed!

[Flashback]

“Dauer-hakase, please! You’re the only one I know who could resolve this!”

“Mel, I’ve told Grandis, I’ve told Hayate, and now I’m telling you – the best way for resolution is to solve it amongst yourselves without outside help.”

“Arcas won’t LISTEN to any of us! He’s got it in his head that Gran-chan is no good for Hayate-chan, and he simply won’t let it go! Please, hakase, you’re the only one with the necessary training!”

Dauer sighed. “Is there really no other way?” Mel sighed in reply, then nodded.

“All right,” he replied, exhaling. “Have Hayate set it up.”

[End Flashback]

Dauer sat in one of the office chairs opposite Arcas.

“You know why you’re here?”

“Of course I know,” he snapped. “I’m here because I happen to have a difference of opinion about that bastard Lacetti.”

“‘Difference of opinion,’” Aurion repeated. “The last three times you’ve seen him, you have, and I quote, ‘gone after him like Vita on speed.’” The enforcer looked up from the clipboard. “Some difference of opinion.”

“I can explain that.”

“I’m listening.”

The Lord of Dunamists sighed. “I have to go to these extremes because it seems like no one else is interested in protecting Hayate.”

“Protecting her? From whom?”

“This time around, herself.”

“And why does she need protection from herself?”

“She’s deluding herself about Lacetti,” Arcas responded. “She thinks she’s in love with him.”

“And she’s not?”

“No! Look, she was a hostage, right? And Lacetti took care of her, yes?”

“That’s correct.”

“Now, I’m not the psych expert you are, but I know enough that’s there some sort of condition where hostages wind up falling in love with their captors.”

“Bauer Syndrome.”

“Yes!”

“But, the hostage is in love – you said so yourself.”

“It’s not real love! It’s love under extreme mental duress!”

“And you’re convinced that Hayate is suffering from it.”

“I am – and I seem to be the only one who is.”

“Yes – and since no one else seems interested, it’s all up to me. And let me tell you – I don’t enjoy playing the bad guy here.”

“No, but if it had been both of us there, rather than just one, the two of us could have prevented the kidnapping.”

Aurion nodded. “I see. Could you excuse me for a moment?”

Aurion Dauer walked into the room Hayate had set aside for a one-on-one conversation with Commander Arcasaviel Emira, the Dragonslayer. The former Enforcer remembered the conversation which had lead to this moment.

[Flashback]

“Dauer-hakase, please! You’re the only one I know who could resolve this!”

“Mel, I’ve told Grandis, I’ve told Hayate, and now I’m telling you – the best way for resolution is to solve it amongst yourselves without outside help.”

“Arcas won’t LISTEN to any of us! He’s got it in his head that Gran-chan is no good for Hayate-chan, and he simply won’t let it go! Please, hakase, you’re the only one with the necessary training!”

Dauer sighed. “Is there really no other way?” Mel sighed in reply, then nodded.

“All right,” he replied, exhaling. “Have Hayate set it up.”

[End Flashback]

Dauer sat in one of the office chairs opposite Arcas.

“You know why you’re here?”

“Of course I know,” he snapped. “I’m here because I happen to have a difference of opinion about that bastard Lacetti.”

“‘Difference of opinion,’” Aurion repeated. “The last three times you’ve seen him, you have, and I quote, ‘gone after him like Vita on speed.’” The enforcer looked up from the clipboard. “Some difference of opinion.”

“I can explain that.”

“I’m listening.”

The Lord of Dunamists sighed. “I have to go to these extremes because it seems like no one else is interested in protecting Hayate.”

“Protecting her? From whom?”

“This time around, herself.”

“And why does she need protection from herself?”

“She’s deluding herself about Lacetti,” Arcas responded. “She thinks she’s in love with him.”

“And she’s not?”

“No! Look, she was a hostage, right? And Lacetti took care of her, yes?”

“That’s correct.”

“Now, I’m not the psych expert you are, but I know enough that’s there some sort of condition where hostages wind up falling in love with their captors.”

“Bauer Syndrome.”

“Yes!”

“But, the hostage is in love – you said so yourself.”

“It’s not real love! It’s love under extreme mental duress!”

“And you’re convinced that Hayate is suffering from it.”

“I am – and I seem to be the only one who is.”

“And that’s why she needs protection?”

“Yes – and since no one else seems interested, it’s all up to me. And let me tell you – I don’t enjoy playing the bad guy here.”

“What if you weren’t alone? What if someone else was willing to be the bad guy? Would you stop then?”

Arcas paused for a moment. “No.”

“Why not?”

“When Hayate got kidnapped, I wasn’t there to protect her.”

“Signum was – do you think you’re better than Signum?”

“No, but if it had been both of us there, rather than just one, the two of us could have prevented the kidnapping.”

“But you weren’t.”

“No, I wasn’t. But I’m here to protect her now, and that’s what I’m going to do.”

Aurion nodded. “I see. Could you excuse me for a moment?”

“Sure…”

He stepped out, and looked down the hall to see the Aces, Wolkenritter, Grandis, and Mel.

“So?” Nanoha asked. “Is it done?”

“Yes and no.”

Tesla arched an eyebrow. “Precisely what does that mean?”

“It means I’ve done all I can – and found the REAL problem.”

“Which is?” That was Shamal.

“Guilt,” Aurion responded.

“Hold on a minute,” Grandis interrupted. “You’re saying he doesn’t hate me?”

“No – but he’s convinced himself that he does so that he can distract himself from the guilt he feels about not being there when Hayate was kidnapped.”

“So, what can we do?” Fate asked.

“Well, it’s not a question of what WE can do as much as…” Aurion’s head turned, and the rest followed.

“Me?” Hayate replied.

“In the end, it’s all about you. You’re the only one with the power to relieve Arcas of his guilt.”

The Mistress of the Night Sky exhaled. “Okay. What do I need to do?”

Hayate steeled herself, then stepped into the room. Arcas looked up.

“Where’s Dauer?”

“He says that he can’t do any more to help you.”

“But he thinks you can?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Oji-chan’s opinion is that you’re feeling guilty about not being there when I was kidnapped, and that your behavior now is a way of distracting yourself from that guilt.”

“And you have the ability to relieve this guilt.”

“Yes,” she responded.

Arcas shook his head. “I don’t believe it.”

“I do – and I want to tell you that I don’t blame you. What you did, you did so that you didn’t have to feel guilt over what happened.”

“That’s not true! What I did, I did for you! I did it so I could protect you this time!”

“And you don’t think I’m capable of protecting myself?”

“No!” Arcas realized what he said. “Yes! I mean, you CAN, but you won’t protect you from yourself!”

“Nii-san – I’m a grown-up girl now. I know what I’m getting into – I know that relationships come with potential heartbreak attached. I’ve accepted that, and if it happens, then I’ll deal with it.”

“Hayate…I…” The words of the Mistress of the Night Sky hit home with the force of a hundred Starlight Breakers. And then, the truth of the terrible thing he was doing dawned on him.

What have I done?

“Nii-san?” Hayate slowly moved towards him. She was two steps away from him when he jerked out of his trance.

“Hayate, stay away from me.”

“Nii-san, please. All I want is to show you that I forgive you.”

“No! Hayate, stay back! I don’t deserve forgiveness for what I’ve done!”

“Never!”

Then, in one brief second, a sound split the air.

Arcas had slapped Hayate. She took a step backwards, hand raised to her face.

“DAMMIT, HAYATE! Hate me! Hate me for what I’ve done! Hate me for trying to hurt the man you love! Hate me for trying to take away someone who makes you happy!” He slumped to his knees, head in hands. “Please…just hate me.”

Hayate drew in a breath, and let the words of her Oji-chan come back to her.

Whatever you do, don’t EVER say that you hate him. If you do, then he’ll never forgive himself, and things will just get worse.

She slowly knelt in front of the distraught Dragonslayer. “I can’t do that,” she answered.

“Why?”

Hayate smiled. “I could never hate my Nii-san.”

“Hayate…I’m NOT your Nii-san. I’m a horrible, horrible monster, who only wants you for himself.”

“Nn,” she replied. “Sou ja nai. Anata wa atashi no nii-san. Zutto.”

“No, I’m not.”

“Yes, you are. You’re not a monster, Nii-san. I gaze into those big, beautiful violet eyes, looking for the monster you say you are. But I don’t see him anywhere – all I see is my Nii-san, haunted by his own guilt, searching for release. I'll say it again: you are my Nii-san. My Nii-san, who is brave, and stands for what he believes in. My Nii-san, who is kind, and would never wantonly harm a girl. My Nii-san, who says the right thing, even when he doesn't know what to say. My Nii-san, who worries for others, and never for himself. You are as I remember you, my gentle, warmhearted Nii-san.”

“Hayate…I…” Arcas tried to think of something to say, but lost his train of thought when Hayate wrapped her arms around his torso, and pulled her body to his. He exhaled, then returned the embrace, arms around her shoulders.

“Nii-san. No matter who else comes and goes in my life, I’ll always love you.”

Outside, the others waited. Grandis turned to Mel.

“I can still love him, Gran-san, because I know he’s not like this. I know it’s a tired saying, but you don’t know him like I do. Arcas is someone who feels his responsibility and duties very much. They weigh heavily on him – a snap like this happens to even the best of us. Besides, Gran-san, everyone needs saving at some time. Even the strong – especially the strong. Because more often than not, the strong need saving not from another, but from themselves.”

What Mel said resounded with the former mercenary.

“I suppose you’re right – I haven’t known him for very long compared to the rest of you.”

“Don’t worry – Hayate-chan will sort this all out – and then you’ll be able to see the real Arcas. Although, he probably won’t warm up to you right away – got an image to maintain and all.”

Grandis opened his mouth to reply, but was interrupted by the sound of the door opening. Arcas and Hayate both emerged. All save Mel moved the short distance from where they had waited to the door.

“Is it over?” Fate asked.

“Yes,” Hayate responded. “It’s done.”

“And since it is, Mel and I need to be leaving,” Arcas spoke up.

He made his way through the crowd, briefly locking an eye with Grandis. Everyone turned to watch him walk to Mel, who wrapped an arm around his waist, looking up at him. The others observed their lips moving, but were unable to discern what was being said. Arcas exhaled, and then put an arm over Mel’s shoulders. They turned away, and began walking down the hall. Then, they stopped.

“Lacetti.”

It was the Lord of Dunamists.

“Treat her right – treat her like a lady.”

And then, they disappeared around a corner.

Grandis looked to Hayate. He smiled a lopsided smile, then raised his eyebrows.

“I guess that’s approval, huh?”

Hayate smiled, leaned into her boyfriend, and replied.

“As much as we can expect, for now.”

Outside, the Phantasms slid into the Phantasmobile, with Mel in the driver’s seat.

“You okay?” Mel was still worried.

“No – but I will be. I just have to realize that Hayate’s not a little girl anymore; that she can make her own decisions – and take responsibility for the consequences.”

“But you will be okay?”

“Eventually. It’s never easy letting go the first time.”

“The first time? What about Nanoha-chan and Fate-chan?”

The Dragonslayer shook his head. “That’s different. From the first time I saw Nanoha with Yuuno, and Fate with Kha-sama, I knew. I knew that my time was limited – that I would never take that place in their hearts. With Hayate, it was different. When I met her, there was no one like that in her life – I guess somewhere along the way, the idea that there never would be a someone got stuck in my head, and I refused to give it up.” He looked to Mel. “And it’s not over, either.”

The Lady of Hope tilted her head. “What do you mean?”

“I’ve seen how Caro looks at Erio, and that even though Keroko doesn’t have a special someone yet, there’re enough guys in her life to make her start thinking about one.”

“There’s still Sophia.”

Arcas shook his head. “It’s not the same. She’s the head of a convent. Her special someone won’t be a single person – it’ll be the children there.” He paused. “Mel, am I being too selfish? Was it wrong of me to think that life would let me keep even one of my little sisters?”

Mel thought it over, trying to find the right words. “Yes and no. They’re always going to be involved in your life, so in that way, you still have them. But, you can’t expect to be the most important man in their life forever.”

“So I’m learning.”

“Don’t worry, Arc-chan,” she said, leaning in and briefly nipping his neck. “I’ll always be here.”

The Dragonslayer returned the sign of affection, nuzzling his beloved’s face. “I know.”

Their moment was interrupted by the chime of an incoming message. It was Himeya, the Delphinus’ AI.

“Himeya-san. What’s up?”

“You’re needed at DC HQ ASAP. There’s a difference of opinion over which squad gets which assignment.”

“‘Difference of opinion,’ huh?” Arcas replied.

“Yes. Did I miss something?”

“Nah. We’ll be right there.”

Now that you mentioned Yuuno...I remember seeing in A's Artwork Book Side-A, that the ribbon Yuuno wears in the Epilogue and StrikerS, is one of Nanoha's ribbons

Pff, the beamspam in endgame strikers was nothing compared to the endgame in A's. The critical factor was Blaster Mode, not the beamspam. It was because of Blaster Mode that the beamspam did so much damage.

“So I’m learning.”

“Don’t worry, Arc-chan,” she said, leaning in and briefly nipping his neck. “I’ll always be here.”

The Dragonslayer returned the sign of affection, nuzzling his beloved’s face. “I know.”

Their moment was interrupted by the chime of an incoming message. It was Himeya, the Delphinus’ AI.

“Himeya-san. What’s up?”

“You’re needed at DC HQ ASAP. There’s a difference of opinion over which squad gets which assignment.”

“‘Difference of opinion,’ huh?” Arcas replied.

“Yes. Did I miss something?”

“Nah. We’ll be right there.”

“Mel, I’ve told Grandis, I’ve told Hayate, and now I’m telling you – the best way for resolution is to solve it amongst yourselves without outside help.”

“Arcas won’t LISTEN to any of us! He’s got it in his head that Gran-chan is no good for Hayate-chan, and he simply won’t let it go! Please, hakase, you’re the only one with the necessary training!”

Dauer sighed. “Is there really no other way?” Mel sighed in reply, then nodded.

“All right,” he replied, exhaling. “Have Hayate set it up.”

[End Flashback]

Dauer sat in one of the office chairs opposite Arcas.

“You know why you’re here?”

“Of course I know,” he snapped. “I’m here because I happen to have a difference of opinion about that bastard Lacetti.”

“‘Difference of opinion,’” Aurion repeated. “The last three times you’ve seen him, you have, and I quote, ‘gone after him like Vita on speed.’” The enforcer looked up from the clipboard. “Some difference of opinion.”

“I can explain that.”

“I’m listening.”

The Lord of Dunamists sighed. “I have to go to these extremes because it seems like no one else is interested in protecting Hayate.”

“Protecting her? From whom?”

“This time around, herself.”

“And why does she need protection from herself?”

“She’s deluding herself about Lacetti,” Arcas responded. “She thinks she’s in love with him.”

“And she’s not?”

“No! Look, she was a hostage, right? And Lacetti took care of her, yes?”

“That’s correct.”

“Now, I’m not the psych expert you are, but I know enough that’s there some sort of condition where hostages wind up falling in love with their captors.”

“Bauer Syndrome.”

“Yes!”

“But, the hostage is in love – you said so yourself.”

“It’s not real love! It’s love under extreme mental duress!”

“And you’re convinced that Hayate is suffering from it.”

“I am – and I seem to be the only one who is.”

“And that’s why she needs protection?”

“Yes – and since no one else seems interested, it’s all up to me. And let me tell you – I don’t enjoy playing the bad guy here.”

“What if you weren’t alone? What if someone else was willing to be the bad guy? Would you stop then?”

Arcas paused for a moment. “No.”

“Why not?”

“When Hayate got kidnapped, I wasn’t there to protect her.”

“Signum was – do you think you’re better than Signum?”

“No, but if it had been both of us there, rather than just one, the two of us could have prevented the kidnapping.”

“But you weren’t.”

“No, I wasn’t. But I’m here to protect her now, and that’s what I’m going to do.”

Aurion nodded. “I see. Could you excuse me for a moment?”

“Sure…”

He stepped out, and looked down the hall to see the Aces, Wolkenritter, Grandis, and Mel.

“So?” Nanoha asked. “Is it done?”

“Yes and no.”

Tesla arched an eyebrow. “Precisely what does that mean?”

“It means I’ve done all I can – and found the REAL problem.”

“Which is?” That was Shamal.

“Guilt,” Aurion responded.

“Hold on a minute,” Grandis interrupted. “You’re saying he doesn’t hate me?”

“No – but he’s convinced himself that he does so that he can distract himself from the guilt he feels about not being there when Hayate was kidnapped.”

“So, what can we do?” Fate asked.

“Well, it’s not a question of what WE can do as much as…” Aurion’s head turned, and the rest followed.

“Me?” Hayate replied.

“In the end, it’s all about you. You’re the only one with the power to relieve Arcas of his guilt.”

The Mistress of the Night Sky exhaled. “Okay. What do I need to do?”

Hayate steeled herself, then stepped into the room. Arcas looked up.

“Where’s Dauer?”

“He says that he can’t do any more to help you.”

“Oji-chan’s opinion is that you’re feeling guilty about not being there when I was kidnapped, and that your behavior now is a way of distracting yourself from that guilt.”

“And you have the ability to relieve this guilt.”

“Yes,” she responded.

Arcas shook his head. “I don’t believe it.”

“I do – and I want to tell you that I don’t blame you. What you did, you did so that you didn’t have to feel guilt over what happened.”

“That’s not true! What I did, I did for you! I did it so I could protect you this time!”

“And you don’t think I’m capable of protecting myself?”

“No!” Arcas realized what he said. “Yes! I mean, you CAN, but you won’t protect you from yourself!”

“Nii-san – I’m a grown-up girl now. I know what I’m getting into – I know that relationships come with potential heartbreak attached. I’ve accepted that, and if it happens, then I’ll deal with it.”

“Hayate…I…” The words of the Mistress of the Night Sky hit home with the force of a hundred Starlight Breakers. And then, the truth of the terrible thing he was doing dawned on him.

What have I done?

“Nii-san?” Hayate slowly moved towards him. She was two steps away from him when he jerked out of his trance.

“Hayate, stay away from me.”

“Nii-san, please. All I want is to show you that I forgive you.”

“No! Hayate, stay back! I don’t deserve forgiveness for what I’ve done!”

“Never!”

Then, in one brief second, a sound split the air.

Arcas had slapped Hayate. She took a step backwards, hand raised to her face.

“DAMMIT, HAYATE! Hate me! Hate me for what I’ve done! Hate me for trying to hurt the man you love! Hate me for trying to take away someone who makes you happy!” He slumped to his knees, head in hands. “Please…just hate me.”

Hayate drew in a breath, and let the words of her Oji-chan come back to her.

Whatever you do, don’t EVER say that you hate him. If you do, then he’ll never forgive himself, and things will just get worse.

She slowly knelt in front of the distraught Dragonslayer. “I can’t do that,” she answered.

“Why?”

Hayate smiled. “I could never hate my Nii-san.”

“Hayate…I’m NOT your Nii-san. I’m a horrible, horrible monster, who only wants you for himself.”

“Nn,” she replied. “Sou ja nai. Anata wa atashi no nii-san. Zutto.”

“No, I’m not.”

“Yes, you are. You’re not a monster, Nii-san. I gaze into those big, beautiful violet eyes, looking for the monster you say you are. But I don’t see him anywhere – all I see is my Nii-san, haunted by his own guilt, searching for release. I'll say it again: you are my Nii-san. My Nii-san, who is brave, and stands for what he believes in. My Nii-san, who is kind, and would never wantonly harm a girl. My Nii-san, who says the right thing, even when he doesn't know what to say. My Nii-san, who worries for others, and never for himself. You are as I remember you, my gentle, warmhearted Nii-san.”

“Hayate…I…” Arcas tried to think of something to say, but lost his train of thought when Hayate wrapped her arms around his torso, and pulled her body to his. He exhaled, then returned the embrace, arms around her shoulders.

“Nii-san. No matter who else comes and goes in my life, I’ll always love you.”

Outside, the others waited. Grandis turned to Mel.

“I can still love him, Gran-san, because I know he’s not like this. I know it’s a tired saying, but you don’t know him like I do. Arcas is someone who feels his responsibility and duties very much. They weigh heavily on him – a snap like this happens to even the best of us. Besides, Gran-san, everyone needs saving at some time. Even the strong – especially the strong. Because more often than not, the strong need saving not from another, but from themselves.”

What Mel said resounded with the former mercenary.

“I suppose you’re right – I haven’t known him for very long compared to the rest of you.”

“Don’t worry – Hayate-chan will sort this all out – and then you’ll be able to see the real Arcas. Although, he probably won’t warm up to you right away – got an image to maintain and all.”

Grandis opened his mouth to reply, but was interrupted by the sound of the door opening. Arcas and Hayate both emerged. All save Mel moved the short distance from where they had waited to the door.

“Is it over?” Fate asked.

“Yes,” Hayate responded. “It’s done.”

“And since it is, Mel and I need to be leaving,” Arcas spoke up.

He made his way through the crowd, briefly locking an eye with Grandis. Everyone turned to watch him walk to Mel, who wrapped an arm around his waist, looking up at him. The others observed their lips moving, but were unable to discern what was being said. Arcas exhaled, and then put an arm over Mel’s shoulders. They turned away, and began walking down the hall. Then, they stopped.

“Lacetti.”

It was the Lord of Dunamists.

“Treat her right – treat her like a lady.”

And then, they disappeared around a corner.

Grandis looked to Hayate. He smiled a lopsided smile, then raised his eyebrows.

“I guess that’s approval, huh?”

Hayate smiled, leaned into her boyfriend, and replied.

“As much as we can expect, for now.”

Outside, the Phantasms slid into the Phantasmobile, with Mel in the driver’s seat.

“The first time? What about Nanoha-chan and Fate-chan?”

The Dragonslayer shook his head. “That’s different. From the first time I saw Nanoha with Yuuno, and Fate with Kha-sama, I knew. I knew that my time was limited – that I would never take that place in their hearts. With Hayate, it was different. When I met her, there was no one like that in her life – I guess somewhere along the way, the idea that there never would be a someone got stuck in my head, and I refused to give it up.” He looked to Mel. “And it’s not over, either.”

The Lady of Hope tilted her head. “What do you mean?”

“I’ve seen how Caro looks at Erio, and that even though Keroko doesn’t have a special someone yet, there’re enough guys in her life to make her start thinking about one.”

“There’s still Sophia.”
