strange/funny looking characters, creepy bear, those are good starting points xD didn't mind much the exposition, it didn't look boring, and since i'm not aware of the original source i can't really say if it's being fast paced or not, but this pace looks fine for me, hope it doesn't slow down along the way (now waiting for any subs to also understand what they actually said) |

Anyway, back to speculation. With too many characters front up and there are people dying, I don't really care about learning their names first but just identifiable traits. Also I had quite a scare when Sayaka said that she's an Esper since those with useful OP abilities that can solve mysteries easily are often the ones who died first, luckily it's just a weird sense of humour. Atm just waiting for someone to crack. I don't really get the video though, it seems like he's just angry that the sofa got cut? :P Now in regard to possible first death and culprit....I have no idea really since they are all equally expendable except the two main characters, and possibly the girl with no background? Also a request. I want to look for fan arts of the characters, especially Sayaka Maizono, but I fear the usual image sites will contain pictures of possible crucial plot moments/injokes about her in future developments. For those who has a collection or are immune to spoilers, can I ask you guys to link some nice pictures here? Thank you

That's what's intended, at any rate. It's supposed to be implying that his parents are dead. |

Anime-only viewer (though I did catch the OP for the PSP version):
I've played the first of the Zero Escape games (9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors), and when I first saw the summary for this, it instantly reminded me of that game (coupled with Pheonix Wright). In all honesty, having watched the first episode, the comparisons are even stronger with the former - a diverse selection of characters, including one who is the MC's friend, needing to kill each other to get out of this hell-hole. The specifics are obviously different (straight up murder rather than matching numbers on a door) but the mechanic is somewhat the same - escape at all costs. And I love it. This is close as it's going to get to a Zero Escape anime and I'm not letting go for this ride - Monobear is a nutjob with a God complex and the last part in the AV room was expertly done imo. If the part in the middle is going to be the OP, keeping it as the same song from the game is a strong idea rather than trying to be different about it. The ED, if you note the lyrics, appears to be sung from Makoto Naegi's POV, giving a vocal summary of his situation and motivations (from being forced into this game to wishing to play the hero to rescue Sayaka Maizono, regardless of how stupid that sounds) - quite clever. I'm in. 10/10 first ep. |

So...just finished watching the first episode and it was quite good! Good enough to make me curse the fact that I don't have a PSP to play the game :|
Anyway, the setting is interesting because of the twist in the generic death game, most of the character designs are awesome, most characters seem to have entertaining personalities that match well with the setting, the soundtrack is great (I'm a sucker for good sound-track) and the story has a nice pace for now. That said.............I really don't trust the Idol girl one bit...if these kinds of manga/anime have taught me anything, it's that girls like her usually end up being either killed early on OR end up being the most twisted and dangerous character in the cast. Looking forward to more! |

If this turns out to be so well done I don't know if I could wait week after week But that ED sure is catchy.

Danganronpa 01 done.
Wish I had a vita or something so I can play the game. Top 3 favorites so far from just the basic introductions 1) Swimmer girl 2) Gambler 3) Scion Least 3 Favorite 1) Otaku 2) Bookworm 3) Perfect I assume everyone's video is different. Being that the MC's friend is an idol, hers was probably some 'adult' video of hers or a secret video of her private moments or something. Otaku's one was probably his collection destroyed lol. |

I haven't seen such crazy hair since Shiki. The character design is hilarious, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.
First episode was nothing special. It did a good job setting things up. The introduction of the characters were a bit too fast however, I can't remember a single one of their names. Going by the survivor count at the end, I assume a lot (all?) of them are going to die. Bring on the despair!! I bet the mastermind is hiding among the students. It's always like this in this kind of story. No idea who it could be yet. None of them appear to be particularly suspicious, except the guy voiced by Akira Ishida.

I love the cute little schoolgirl voiced by Mama Red Squirrel Miyata Kouki, and that JoJo reject in the girls school uniform. There's enough evidence here that Dangenronpa knows how silly this premise is that it might work in spite of how silly it is.
Nice it hear Oogata Megumi as the male lead again - very nostalgic. Is this the first time since Tantei Gakuen Q?
