Anyway, as the title of this post indicates, I've been attacked by yet another plot bunny. It'll probably end up as a long, drawn-out series, assuming that I do see it through to the end, but hopefully I should have an easier time doing so with this plot bunny than with my Nanoha/Archie crossover.

Speaking of that crossover, I've kinda given up on it given that I just can't seem to get in all the tiny details that I want. Furthermore, since it was really ambitious in the sense that I was trying to work in the NanoFate, the SubaTia, and the infamous Riverdale Love Triangle with Wendi Nakajima's story and the main plot, well, I've decided to just stop, take a step back, and work on something else to get my creative juices flowing again. I'll probably edit it bit by bit if I do feel like it, though, but for now, consider it as on indefinite hiatus...

This new plot bunny that I have is yet another cross-over, but I feel that it's actually a bit more feasible (and way more out there) than a crossover with Archie. After having watched the BBC mini-series "Lost in Austen", I have decided to do a crossover with "Pride and Prejudice" along similar lines to that.

Yes, that's right, "Pride and Prejudice", right down to the "It is a truth universally acknowledged..." part. Why? Yes, I'm a guy, I've had a girlfriend (currently single and not looking), I listen to melodic death metal on a daily basis, and yet "Pride and Prejudice" is one of my fave books out there. Simply put, it's about changing the way you view the world and the things that you do for that special person in your heart.

So, without further ado, here's the first chapter of:

It Is A Truth Universally Acknowledged...

A MGLN/Pride & Prejudice Crossover

Genre: Romance/humor
Pairings: Subaru/Teana, possible Hayate/Shamal, standard pairings in P&P
Timeline: A year after StrikerS
Pre-story scenario: Hayate and Shamal decide to pay ex-Admiral Graham a visit in England. Teana is currently taking a short break from her Enforcer training and, without anything to do, decides to tag along and learn about the planet that Hayate and Nanoha are from. As for Subaru, well, 'nuff said.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.

In today’s modern world, it should also be said that a single woman in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a husband or, depending on said woman’s sexuality, a wife.

While not stupendously rich as her superiors in the Time-Space Administration Bureau, Hayate Yagami is considered to be rich for someone of her twenty years, mainly as a result as her rapid promotions. Her sexuality, however, is currently unknown, even to her loyal Wolkenritter Guardian Knights and her closest friends, and, as far as everyone is aware, there has been no interest on her part to find someone to be in a relationship in. Yet.

Subaru Nakajima, aged 16, on the other hand, is best described as having an average fortune due to not having worked as long as Ms Yagami (working in disaster zones does net one a pretty penny, though), but is already in want of a wife, preferably one particular Teana Lanster, aged 17.

Yes, let it be known that it is a truth universally acknowledged that rainbows are straighter than Subaru Nakajima.

It was a lovely summer evening in the English countryside as Hayate, Subaru, Teana, and Shamal were driving back to London after visiting the retired Admiral Graham. While Hayate was having a chat with the Knight of the Lake about how well the ex-Admiral was doing considering his age, Teana could not help but notice that Subaru was deep in thought.

“Ne, Subaru, are you awake?”

“I’m just thinking about something, Tea.”

“About what?”

“About how beautiful an English sunset in the summer season is. I’d really like to get married here one of these days.”

Tea snorted.

“No surprise there.”

“I’m serious, Tea! I can imagine myself standing out there in a white bridegroom suit, next to my bride in white. It’ll be so romantic…”

Tea snorted again. For someone whom Subaru saw as a future wife, the gun-mage was not acting lady-like.

“I’m pretty sure you’ll find someone out there, Subaru. When you do, give all of us a call, and we’ll set up your perfect English mid-summer wedding out here in the English countryside on Earth.”

“I’ve already found the one person I want to be with for the rest of my life.”

“Oh? Who is she? Anyone I know?”

Before the blue-haired cyborg could reply, Hayate pulled the car over into a stopover service station.

“Sorry guys, but since it will be way past midnight by the time we return to our hotel in London, we’ll have to eat dinner here. Shamal, could you hand out the money?”

Subaru did not know whether she should punch Hayate for interrupting what would have been, in her mind, a tender moment, or if she should thank her for averting a potentially awkward situation.

Hayate sighed as she leant against her pillow. Dinner that evening had been awkward at best, and the ride back to the hotel remained relatively silent. Trying to distract her mind from earlier on, the brunette picked up the book she had started reading a few days earlier when she was still back on Mid-Childa. She did not really care if the book was written in English – Mid-Childan was a very similar language, and there was a charm about reading about life in 18th-century England in English itself.

Hayate, Shamal suddenly asked telepathically, are you sure that keeping Subaru and Teana in separate hotel rooms is a good idea?

Shamal, Tea’s trying to sort out her own feelings for Subaru. If we were to put them in the same hotel room, Subaru will be tempted to do something, which in turn will wreck whatever, if any, romantic feelings that our tsundere has towards her.

Yes, I know that, Shamal shot back while taking a look at the sleeping cyborg, but…

Besides, both Signum and I did something similar when Rein started crushing heavily on Agito, and it turned out pretty well, if I’d say so myself.

If you say so, Hayate. It’s just that what you’re doing reminds me of what Admiral Graham did to you, except on a smaller, not-so-destructive scale.

The whole "being manipulative" part? Hahahaha, we’ll see about that. Anyway, we should rest up now. We’ve got a day’s worth of sightseeing to do before we fly back to Japan to see Lindy en route to Mid-Childa.

You just want to see the Beefeater costumes, don’t you?

I wonder what Zaffy, Vice, Chrono, Yuuno, Rossa, and Griffith would look like in them!

Several telepathic giggles later, the lights in two connected hotel rooms switched off at the same time.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that Teana Lanster looks smashingly lovely with her hair tied up. As such, there are currently no words used to describe how divine the gun-mage looks with her hair down. Those were the thoughts that were currently running through Subaru’s head as both she and Shamal entered the room that Hayate and Teana were sleeping in.

“Hayate! Is there a problem?” There was a worried look on Shamal's face.

“Cross Mirage must have picked up a really strong energy signature nearby,” the brunette muttered as she put on a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. “Tea woke me up before she could fire off that emergency telepathic alert to the two of you.”

[That is correct,] Cross Mirage stated. [There is a massive energy signature in the vicinity.]

“Could you try telling us what kind of energy it is?” Teana asked her Intelligent Device.

[I’m afraid not, Sir.]

“Subaru,” the redhead turned towards the cyborg, “you’ve got Mach Calibur with you right? Could you…”

[I’m sorry,] Mach Calibur replied in her standby form, [but I’m afraid that I can’t analyze the energy signature as well.]

“Well, can you at least tell us where the energy signature is coming from?” Shamal had returned to the room after sneaking out to gather some clothes from her own. “If it’s hostile, knowing its location will help us devise tactics to sort out the problem.”

The two devices paused for a few moments as they attempted to process the signature before intoning their reply together as one.

[In this room’s bathroom, behind the wall with the showerhead.]

“Get dressed. Now.” Hayate’s voice had assumed its “I’m in charge, damnit” tone. “When you’re done, activate your devices, and follow me into the bathroom.”

Moments later, the quartet were in the bathroom, with Hayate and Teana pointing Schwertzkreuz and Cross Mirage respectively at the wall.

“So, what do we do now?”

“The energy signature is still present, but I can’t see anything unusual. What about you, Shamal?”

“Nothing, I’m afraid.”

“Are those hinges supposed to be there?” At once, three heads turned to face Subaru. “What? I’m a cyborg, remember?”

“Hmmm… I don’t think these hinges are supposed to be here,” Hayate muttered as she reached out to feel one of the offending objects. “They look as though they were built right into the structure of this room, but I took a shower just before we left to see Admiral Graham, and these weren’t here…” All further words were lost as the wall started glowing before reforming itself as a door that suddenly opened ajar.

As the light show died down, Subaru approached the newly-created door, using her Revolver Knuckle to slowly open it further. Looking in, the quartet saw what they perceived as a hallway with lit flaming torches adorning it.

“Shamal”, Hayate started as she stepped back, “would it be okay if you could investigate the situation with Subaru and Teana? As much as I’d love to explore this new place, it would not be fair to you if I went instead and if you ended up being accused of causing my disappearance, if that happens.”

“I’ll do it, Hayate,” Shamal’s voice was laced with a strong sense of loyalty. “Even though I’m no longer bound as a defensive program within the Tome of the Night Sky, I still consider it my duty to ensure your safety.”

“Thank you very much, Shamal. I’m sorry if I seem selfish…” Words fell away into silence as the brunette found herself subject to a highly affectionate hug from the older blonde.

“Don’t be sorry, Hayate. I’ll be sure to return safely with Subaru and Tea. Besides, there’s something I would like to tell you when I get back.”

Letting go of Hayate, Shamal turned and headed towards the open door. As Subaru and Teana followed the blonde, Hayate could only look on at their retreating backs. As the door started to close, the brunette suddenly snapped into action.

“Hey guys! Wait for me!”

It's been one hell of a week. Leading Lingo and ZettaiKaren around the home island, putting my half-ass'd cosplay costume together, throw in a few dates with the mistress and one for the imouto in exam week, then going flat-out for Anime Festival Asia 2009...

We just had a crazy session of epic with May'n in I Haato Anisong, and then went to build on that with a Rebuild of Evangelion 2.0 with Shou + UWA Genshiken.

My brain is in pieces from the awesomesauce. I'm dead-beat. Seriously. Never had this much fun in such a short time in a looong time.

Pictures will come later. I'm run into the ground and it's only adrenaline keeping me running. So before I hit the sack, I'd like to tell FFT that I'll be back. The next scene of ViVid will resume production this week so stay tuned!

Such a long time has passed since the Golden Age of magic, a time when this empire prospered. I still remember it clearly; flying in the sky, amongst the birds and flies, the clouds stretching themselves over the sky in long white streams. The sun shining down upon the ground hundreds of feet below me, complete with its living cities and people. An awe-inspiring image I have experienced so many times, yet it never loses its euphoria.

I guess, that from the time I was born, I wasn't meant to be what I am now. Back then I could only perform tasks that were simple and without additional thought. Calculations and activation. Detection and measurement. Even for the less gifted ones it wasn't hard, yet I was considered one of the best. The Elite.

As such was my Master, too. She became something beyond my expectations, beyond my most wild imaginations. That such a pure and innocent nine year old would become one of the greatestmages of all time... it is above my level of understanding.

We fought together, fighting for a just cause, for so long. I watched this girl grow from a child, to a teenager and finally into a woman. With friends by our side we ventured into battle to help the helpless, to aid those who needed it the most. We lived and we aged. We found new friends and powerful allies. The empire which in we lived expanded far beyond our plans.

The Golden Age. Worlds joined our ranks. Magic stretched across the cosmos, spreading its welcoming and soothing light on those who accepted it. Those who did not was left alone, with no objections from us. It was their choice to live as they wanted to and we had no right to intervene.

My Master taught me new things. I was upgraded countless of times, growing all the more powerful and calculating. My intelligence spanned far deeper than any normal human and evolved into something the world had never seen before. I began to grow self-conscious, creating my own tasks and goals. It was a development that was impossible to stop, lest they had to deactivate me forever.

Which they choose not to. I suspect I should be grateful, as I would not have been able to see the miracles that magic constructed and created during my lifetime. I would not have been able to speculate about my Master's well-being, her friends and their families.

For twenty years I lived with this self-awareness, the power to evolve and grow, until the time for my Master had been reached. There was nothing I could do or change, the natural death of a human was still impossible to prevent. With all the miracles magic had done, this proved, still, a task that couldn't be undertaken by the rest of humanity. It was outside their reach of understanding.

She was mourned by her family and friends. Previous leaders and associates. I mourned in my own way, but I'm still not certain that it was possible for me. I still wonder upon this day, what I would have done, if I had a body made out of flesh.

After her, came the inevitable death of her remaining friends. Their children, as the children upon them, mourned their parent's passing. And I was still there to witness it. Still I continued to evolve and to be upgraded. I stood without hindrance, with no need for support. Having no body, and no brain, proved to be the key to immortality.

A hundred years. A thousand years. I don't know how long the Golden Age lasted, but the end, the death, drew closer. I knew it from experience. Nothing lasted forever. Not even me.

My memory betrays me at this age. Of what I can see from the once prospering empire, the magic society that ruled all across the cosmos, ruins and memories only remain. Not even I, the last of the Ultimates, can understand, nor fathom, what caused this apocalypse.

Perhaps my memory is failing me after all. I can't be precise as to how much time has passed since my latest maintenance check. However, I can conclude it has been too long. I might be an Ultimate, but even I, without human intervention, are doomed to die given time.

My processor has finally reported a fatal exception occurring in a database far away from my reach. My network, the final evolved form of it, stretches for billions of miles, but yet I can't fix the problem. I'm more powerful than any machine that ever existed, yet I'm completely helpless. This might be what humans once considered to be true hopelessness.

The Ultimates. It was the final form of magical devices. For three million years I have seen my predecessors crumble beneath the weight of time. They were weaker than me, but I consider them family. I mourn for my family.

More fatal errors. Inner connections broken. I have to enter stand-by mode. Who knows how long it will be before I am discovered. If I am discovered.

Raising Heart Ultimate Zero. It is who I am, it is who I will remain.

Thanks. Actually, if I were to set the story in the modern age, it wouldn't be a crossover - it would merely be a P&P-influenced story. I'm simply taking the "Lost In Austen" route (see above link) where someone in today's times finds oneself in a fictional 18th-century England. This time, however, the main character of P&P stays exactly where she's supposed to be.

That said, though, it would be really hilarious if I were to make Caroline Bingley come out to Subaru.

[In this room’s bathroom, behind the wall with the showerhead.]

“Get dressed. Now.” Hayate’s voice had assumed its “I’m in charge, damnit” tone. “When you’re done, activate your devices, and follow me into the bathroom.”

Moments later, the quartet were in the bathroom, with Hayate and Teana pointing Schwertzkreuz and Cross Mirage respectively at the wall.

“So, what do we do now?”

“The energy signature is still present, but I can’t see anything unusual. What about you, Shamal?”

“Nothing, I’m afraid.”

“Are those hinges supposed to be there?” At once, three heads turned to face Subaru. “What? I’m a cyborg, remember?”

“Hmmm… I don’t think these hinges are supposed to be here,” Hayate muttered as she reached out to feel one of the offending objects. “They look as though they were built right into the structure of this room, but I took a shower just before we left to see Admiral Graham, and these weren’t here…” All further words were lost as the wall started glowing before reforming itself as a door that suddenly opened ajar.

As the light show died down, Subaru approached the newly-created door, using her Revolver Knuckle to slowly open it further. Looking in, the quartet saw what they perceived as a hallway with lit flaming torches adorning it.

“Shamal”, Hayate started as she stepped back, “would it be okay if you could investigate the situation with Subaru and Teana? As much as I’d love to explore this new place, it would not be fair to you if I went instead and if you ended up being accused of causing my disappearance, if that happens.”

“I’ll do it, Hayate,” Shamal’s voice was laced with a strong sense of loyalty. “Even though I’m no longer bound as a defensive program within the Tome of the Night Sky, I still consider it my duty to ensure your safety.”

“Thank you very much, Shamal. I’m sorry if I seem selfish…” Words fell away into silence as the brunette found herself subject to a highly affectionate hug from the older blonde.

“Don’t be sorry, Hayate. I’ll be sure to return safely with Subaru and Tea. Besides, there’s something I would like to tell you when I get back.”

Letting go of Hayate, Shamal turned and headed towards the open door. As Subaru and Teana followed the blonde, Hayate could only look on at their retreating backs. As the door started to close, the brunette suddenly snapped into action.

“Hey guys! Wait for me!”

I like it! The Subaru/Tea scenes are well done and true to character, and I'm curious to see what will happen when our trio of heroes go through that door.

Thanks. Actually, if I were to set the story in the modern age, it wouldn't be a crossover - it would merely be a P&P-influenced story. I'm simply taking the "Lost In Austen" route (see above link) where someone in today's times finds oneself in a fictional 18th-century England. This time, however, the main character of P&P stays exactly where she's supposed to be.

That said, though, it would be really hilarious if I were to make Caroline Bingley come out to Subaru.

Thanks for reading, RB! Actually, you should make that "quartet of heroes" - Hayate did decide to join the other three in the end.

As of now, the Shamal/Hayate pairing is still unknown. Even I have no idea whether I should make it a deep-friendship pairing, a one-sided crush on Shamal's side, or if I should have them together at the end of the story. Any suggestions?

I'm pretty proud of the way that I handled the exchange between Subaru and Tea at the start of the chapter, so for someone to say that it was pretty much spot-on in terms of their characterization...

I enjoyed reading "Pride and Prejudice" when I was in eleventh grade back in 2005, and "Lost In Austen" only served to reinforce my love for the book.

No worries mate, I can't exactly blame you. My younger brother didn't enjoy the book when he was in eleventh grade. You could say that TSS and I are part of a rare breed, and that I'm part of an even rarer breed in the sense that I'm a bloke who enjoys his beer, women, and rock-n-roll music, and still has time to appreciate such literature.

But I'm looking forward to this fic, so go figure.
