For fuzzy reasons, the Japanese Navy wanted to increase wheat consumption for its sailors. Apparently the goal of supplying bread to the sailors failed because rice is what the sailors wanted. The Japanese Curry, based on the British version, was thus thickened with wheat flour to satisfy the wheat component the higher-ups asked for. The thickened sauce also have the benefit of staying on a plate in a moving ship.

Curry Fridays is the official tradition of Japanese Navy ships ever since. It helps sailors keep track of flow of time, which in a way parallels how the sea captain in this anime kept count of days for his curry.
Don't bread crumbs counted as wheat-based food too?

Yes, but the fear apparently is Vitamin B1 deficiency Beriberi caused by eating refined rice. The Naval Curry use a LOT of flour as a thickener.

It seems sailors joined up BECAUSE they were promised white rice, with most of them from poor families living off mixed grains. So even though mixed grains was healthier the sailors reject it, consider it poverty food.

Also, panko haven't been invented yet I think.
Panko (bread cooked with electricity) was developed during WW2, so bread crumbs are not readily made in Japan back before that time. Bread was considered snack rather than a meal. Still is really. That's really why Asian bakeries in general sell snack size foods.

Hmm, this feels more like a reverse isekai... since the people from the other world are visiting us. Although they are limited to just going to the restaurant.

Excited to see the next ep... I wonder if Kuro would be a good waitress? She might get tempted to eat the food she's about to serve.

OK, I really wonder about the economics of the restaurant. Does the Master have any use for the silver he exchanged for the cookies, or was that just something he said so it wouldn't be "free"?

And how successful of a fisherman does the kid have to be to have that much silver on him as pocket change, and to keep going to the restaurant?

Still, I hope it goes well with his mermaid friend. And maybe he could find a way to make her earn her own money. Isn't there some wreck with treasure in it she can salvage or something? Since the other merpeople don't care about money.

Also, I'm glad Aletta found a job, even if it pays 10 times less than waitressing at the restaurant.

omg the drugs dealer is getting nasty!!!!!, now he is hiring "third part" help to bring more innocents to his den of evil drugs, that evil mermaid, lured the poor fishment to the smuggle then... poor guy, and the nasty drug dealer not happy with only this now is making his workers, trafic his "food drugs" to the other world to lure even more peoples to his evil place, now i'm trully conviced which he is really aiming to take over this world by turning everyone on this world in food "zombies", which will do anything he want to eat his food, this anime is start to remember me one episode of a old "psicho-horror-supernatural serie episodic where each episode was about something supernatural, this remember me the episode where a guy which was a gourmet which goes to a chinese or japanese restaurant and give nasty comment about the food in the next day he goes again and find himself unable to stop eat and ending trapped inside the restaurant eating "forever".

this anime remember me a lot this episode the way of the peoples are totally adicted by his food.

lol well this episode mermaid and the demon girl getting a new job was interesting and must be really creep having someoone aways talking direct to your brains by telepathy, you must feel "invaded and loosing your privacity.

honestly i would know what he do with all the gold he get, i know which he use part of it to buy ingredients from this world but the ammount of gold/silver he is being payed for sure must be much more than what he need to pay for the ingredients and for the waitress salary/incomings, he can melt all remain gold and try to sell in in our real world???.

This week's episode tastes like diabetes. Not that I mind. The mermaid and the fisher boy make a cute couple. Though I have to wonder how she got introduced to the restaurant...

Aletta moving up in the world was heartwarming to see, and cookies solve racism, good to know

Also, I found it hilarious when the mermaid Arte asked for the silver coins as payment without hesitation, it made me think for that entire arc "Don't do it man, she's only into you for your money!".

The fact that Aletta was hesitant to discuss just where exactly she got the cookies really further adds to this impression. Soon the world will be dominated by an underground cookie ring!

Good for Aletta. She's finally reached a comfortable place in her life. Makes me think it would have been a good idea to ask about potential work earlier. In the end all's well that ends well. Thanks to Sarah she's got a roof over her head and stable employment. Plus she has someone who understands her other job and is trustworthy. Now even has a friend made over cookies .

I can understand Shia being worried about her sister. Not unfair to call it a curse considering how dangerous that kind of life of treasure hunting can be. Unfortunate that it is probably a natural reaction Aletta faces to have people not trust her initially. At least Shia kept her cool and changed her opinion given time. And props to Aletta for using her own cookies in the first place. I'd probably be more selfish and only put out one or two....

The mermaid and fisherman story was cute enough. She's secured her money for the restaurant now .

I do wonder. Maybe she was just exploring the island for some reason and stumbled onto it. If she can gain legs like that she might have been tempted to just test it out in a place without any people.

Don't forget it is a live in job too, so she doesn't have to sleep in abandoned houses anymore.

Speaking of which, I'm curious if everyone's mind is fully open to Kuro with her telepathy. Maybe she can choose how far she wants to hear.

As for the episode itself, I think this probably the best so far. The food this time felt like least important part of the two stories this week which was a more welcome variation from the usual formula. I wish a lot of the other stories were like the one mermaid and the fisherman in particular. Typical as it was for that type of story, it was charming.

Aletta's new job certainly a step up and surprisingly economical. I don't know if I would necessarily call it the best example of networking, but does show how knowing people in a job like that really helps when your in a bind.

Honestly I think like with Dagashi Kashi, think this show would be better served (yes, that was intentional ) as a short with how rigidly it has most adhered to it's setup. Except for Ep 6 I think every episode basically been two disconnected stories which brings about a lack of cohesion you would expect from a 25 min format. Cut that in half and you wouldn't loose anything. It would work better for the food of the week.

yeah and the fact which the mermaid was asking for money for her help and even bring a new costumer" make things even more suspicious, all he need now is make a door open to the human supreme king and demon king and make then taste the foods and he will reign supreme over this world, he already have 2 dragon godness at his protection and service, have a full lizardman village some powerfull mages a very skilled elf, some nobles, he already have enough things to almost conquest this world and now which his food being sold "out" of the restaurant now he is even at better place for his evil plans!!!!.

The fisherman and mermaid are a cute couple and they have a good partnership going on. He gets companionship and a beautiful girl by his side and she gets money for the restaurant.

Can't completely blame Shia for being suspicious of Aletta, but luckily Aletta had the perfect weapon against racism:cookies

Even mermaids exists in this series! Nice. They're bringing in all sorts of fantasy creatures.

Probably one of the weaker episodes in terms of food content although I still think this steak meal looked delicious:

For the love of god, of all people in the internet... Food, drinks & cuisines in general are what helps people, communities & societies from different cultures, to get along with each other, regardless of ethnics & nations. It's sort of an Asian cultural thing, especially in Malaysia. It's natural that when people enjoys great foods, they'll forget about any bad stuffs in mind.

Hmm, the chef certainly has some strong people wanting to eat food at his resto... the two dragons alone assures that no one will try to destroy the restaurant, and the other customers would probably become aggressive / hostile if someone threaten their source of food addiction - an angry lizardman, lionman, or samurai would be a scary thing.

Watched episode 8:

The first half is really nice... almost looks like the start of a Disney love story between mermaid and human.

Second half is Aletta finding a good home at last.. treasure hunter girl trusts her like a friend. Oh, and a month's worth of money for a box of cookies????!!!! - she's lucky that Aletta is an honest girl who say the true price of the cookies, only one silver for the small, and 2 silver for the big can.

Drinking game: Take a drink every time someone says, "K-k-k-kore wa---?" ("What is this---?")

I think I'm gonna die of alcohol poisoning.

Jokes aside, Isekai seriously needs to become its own genre at this point. I like this show, though. It's basically an Isekai show mixed with Shougeki no Soma. I love it.

But it already has a genre. Isekai belongs under the genre high fantasy.

I'm also wondering what the chef is using his profits for.... surely he does not use up all the profits to buy ingredients from the fat merchant.

Guy was surprised that Arte just asked for some cash when she saved his life. That 10 silver coin he gave her should be equal to 10 hamburger steak. Fisherman has a job that earns money - being a fisherman - so giving away one silver coin a week to "date" his mermaid friend does not seem to much of burden.

And one last thing... a "blue god" was mentioned.. could that be the blue dragon? If that dragon somehow also finds it's way to the resto.. chef might have 3 dragons eating at his place.
