You are right, but wrong as well, he may not care about Ellen suffering, but he would care if anything prevented her from being a usable tool for him.
Of course he would probably just find a replacement as quickly as possible if she did die/become crippled, but it would be a major setback to his plans and inconvenient as he lacks any combat abilities of his own.

Does anyone share my belief that it was some man-made incident that caused the first spirit to manifest in the giant space quake 30 years ago?

Rinne was Da'ta (Da'at is the location (the mystical state) where all ten sephirot in the Tree of Life are united as one) Which makes sense because of her origins .

She was born as a result of a large amount of the sprit energy in Shidou suddenly forming a consciousness of its own. and does not appear to exist in the Novel universe and even more likely so after the events of volume 11

The novels really hint that it was Wescot and Woodman that caused the event 30 years ago

Reine is the #2 spirit. There are a lot of small hints that Reine is Phantom and Shidou's mother. This brings into play Mana and Shidou's true surname Takamiya 崇宮 starts with the Kanji 崇 and breaking it up you get the following kanji parts 二 or 2 宀小山示

There is also large amount of small details in the books that point to her not being a normal human (Claiming to have not slept for 30 years, the massive amounts of sleeping pills, the Tea she drinks with literarily more sugar then tea, exactly how did she hold off that Bandersnatch and protect Origami as it seems that it was more damaged then it should have been and the timeing seems to be off based on Reine's story to Origami) Add to that the spirits are base off The tree of Life compare the hair colors for all the known Spirits but Touka, and even then her black hair is one of the colors linked to the 10th, and you will see they match now notice what color 2 is. Phantom seems to bring up Origami's brake down from vol 5 and Origami recognizes Phantom's true voice.
