I'd definitely concur with this. IF you can make it past the rather simplistic animation, you will find exactly what you are looking for. You even sympathize with the antagonists and wonder what the hell is going on, but like Mizu said, it all comes together in the end. It's that good.

Yeah, I usually drop things like this right off the bat but I'm glad I didn't. There were moments I thought my eyes were going teary. Also the OP and ED were beautiful. The scriptwriter's other works didn't work for me however though some people quite liked Cat Soup (not available in your local restaurant).

Elfen Lied was somehow not mentioned, but it also technically fits the theme. If you can stand tragedies, then you can stomach this.

(What the hell am I saying since most 'mindfuck' series involve some form of tragedy or another. )
