There is one thing not so clear. The humans have been living inside the wall for more than 100 years and no giant could took that down. Where does this abnormally big giant came from ? Do the people not have the knowledge that there is such a giant exist ? It's quite far-fetch.

While re-watching the first episode I noticed something that I missed the first time around. Moments before the super giant shows up there is a flash of light that looks like lightening. Giants are bad enough, but giants who can throw lightening bolts . . .

Did anyone else notice this? Any ideas on what it could be?

My guess is that it was the effect of the super giant suddenly appeared out of nowhere (like teleporting in or something). Why I think he teleported in is because people on the wall should have seen such a big giant coming from miles away and not until when he was so close to the wall.

Well, just my theory .

I have to say I just cringed when the guy gave the woman her son's arm. Like seriously who would actually give a family member a bloody body part and be like yeah thats your son. Have to say there is a lot lacking in the story department and it just seems rather incredible(in a bad way). That being said I will probably keep watching it for at least a few episodes and hope that their left field story telling eventually becomes a bit more reasonable.

It's possible. It got itself teleport from somewhere because scouts doesn't have knowledge of it coming to the wall.

Why don't it just teleport to the inside of the city then?

It also disappeared after it broke the wall.......hmm.

I'm wondering if the lightning bolt hit one of the regular size Titans wandering outside the wall. There are a few scenes showing Titans right outside probing the walls. Perhaps this lighting bolt supersized one of them. I could be wrong, but it's a possibility until we know more about what happened.

I need to see this again.

I also discussed this earlier with a friend. In Greek mythology, Zeus took/was given the thunderbolt/lightning from the titans. Hence, in that regards, the titans in Greek mythology originally controlled lightning. Now, if this has any bearing on the story remains to be seen.

I've been wondering why the translated title of Kyojin has been "titan" instead of "giant", since either would describe what we've seen so far. Furthermore, titan is usually used to describe those found in Greek mythology; hence, I'm also wondering if Greek mythology will have an influence in the story.

Edit:

I'm beginning to wonder if that one is a shepherd of sorts, used to get the "cattle" for feeding by breaking down walls when the livestock is fat enough, since this theme was repeated in the first episode that humans are like caged livestock.

Eh... maybe it likes making dramatic entrance

Anyway, there might be some kind of conditions for it to appear. What confuses me is "Why now?". If the invincible wall can be break down with ease so why wait until now?

It woudln't've been very dramatic if they broke in before Armin made his little speech. Do you realize how frustrating it was for them to wait an entire century for someone to say, "The walls aren't going to hold forever"?

I think that is exactly what the story is about. After 100 years of relatively peaceful period, The big fukking giant just pop out of nowhere and ruin it all. I am sure this mystery will be revealed as the story go on.

I did. My interpretion of that scene is that it's not the giant that throw lightning. It's the lightning strike precisely at one of a normal giant which in turn mutate/power up him into a colossal one. As you saw, after that colossal titan kick a hole in the wall, he seem to shrink and is nowhere else to be seen for the rest of the episode. (or perhaps he still stuck outside because he can't get in the tiny hole he punched ?? )

EDIT: oh many ppl seem to have same interpretion as mine. This is what I get for leaving reply page open for too long and don't post it lol.

I think Eren has some kind of psychic ability, dreaming about giants invading the city and shadowy image of his mom picking up by the giant from the ruin. That will be good if he does because people only have sticks and stones to defend themselves from the giants. No hints about super power in the opening sequence though.

It's really entertaining to read these speculations about psychic abilities or Greek mythology somehow connected with the Engrish translation of the title

there's a specific reason why the human civilisation goes down that tech tree, hopefully ep2 or even ep3 will be able to address that

Because it would be much more interesting to see the soldiers with great agility leaping around the Titans and kill them. Using Cannon/Rifle/Artillery against them would be boring to watch (=3=)

Hey! those "harpoons" aren't "down" in the technology tree.. They're very advance technically.... with exception of artillery, my other examples are pretty.. easy to make...

There is one scene where you see a cannon on top of a segment of the wall, which did make me wonder why they wouldn't use those to keep the numbers down.
But then there did seem to be some religious significance attached to the wall which possibly came along a long time since the cannons went up.
