If you want to buy cheap and legal R1 DVDs, shop on DVDPacific.com. If you want cheap R2 DVDs, shop on amazon.co.jp. I got mine Shana DVDs from amazon.co.jp separately for ~5070¥ (~$47), with some discount. Shipping & handling to Europe was 900¥.

I hate to say it to you, but you got robbed. If you want to buy legal ones, wait for september's(?) release of the American vol.1 DVD.

They are DVD magazines, where the DVD describes the media the magazine is in, kinda like e-zine. They're just normal extra DVDs that Geneon JP is not releasing to Geneon USA.

Volumes 1 and 5 have bonus "Magazine" DVD's with extra stuff on them (FIRST PRESS ONLY)
Volumes 2 and 6 Limited editions have collectors boxes which hold 4 volumes each
First Press of Each volume has Calendard cards for 2 months which go in to the Calendard card holder provided in Box 2.

Volume 7 is released End of July
Volume 8 is released End of August

The Magazine DVD's are not related to a Magazine they're just called Magazine dvd's dont ask me why. I guess it's becuase theres a variety of features LIKE a magazine eg clean OP/ED's, Naze no Shana, Round table cast interviews.

As for their availability to Geneon search me but trust me when I say that even in Japan these bonus DVDs are hard to get hold of. I *just* managed to get the first press edition of Volume 1 and get my hands on the bonus dvd of volume 1 because I missed out and only started collecting as Volume 3 was coming out.

Regards

Yup, thanks guys - that's what I figured. I do actually have all 6 released DVDs as well, and was fortunate enough to get both of the Magazine DVDs (even some people who had pre-ordered didn't get them). What I didn't get was why Geneon USA'd be able to get some extras and not others just because they're on "Magazine" discs (since I figured as well that it was just a name), but I guess that's life. It's unfortunate for those planning to collect the R1s, however, and as you say, it's almost impossible to get nowadays even in Japan. So, they really weren't kidding when they said "while supplies last".

Actually, you're wrong about that part. I just received vol.4 (along with vol.6 with the box) and it was the regular edition. It had the calendar card in. (pic1, pic2)
So, only vol.1 and vol.5 had special extras in their first press editions (those were the two DVD Magazines). I'm not sure about the calendar card holder for vol.2 since I got the first press edition. The limited editions of vol.2 and vol.6 came with a box.

EDIT: Never mind.

Inccorrect - That Volume 4 is first press, the pink label denotes that it's first press. DVD's without pink labels are regular editions.

Ah, I just assumed that I'd get the regular edition since my order was shipped 2 months after the release date and because I saw different japanese words on the top. They were actually just announcing the Shakugan no Shana movie and the actual "first limited edition" press was in a small font underneath.

I've got a couple of questions. How much of the Novels does the series cover, and is there anybody doing a translations of the Novel like the Suzumiya Haruhi novels (Am I even allowed to ask this?). I hate it when anime's don't finish the storyline of something so if this is the case I usually read the novel or manga instead if I have a choice because I can't stand leaving stories unfinished. Okay thanks.

Well, besides the chinese translated version, I believe it was under consideration by TokyoPop. However from a recent post made by the Novels Editor, the novels are apparently picked up by another company. So there may be english versions released, but even if that does happens, it probably won't be anytime soon.
