Perhaps we should form a "long hair group" on the forum. If it was good enough for the last 50,000 years, its good enough now None of this "cut it all off short-lived fad" stuff

All my employers have rather strongly suggested I cut my hair. While I don't have any particular attachment to it's current length beyond the benefits I get out of it during the winter months, they're typically told to deal with it and stand in awe of my salesmanship.

I frankly have *never* gotten a rational answer from anyone who ever whined about my hair (which is really pathetic since I actually know the answer of why long hair makes "the Man" nervous and it dates back many, many centuries).
But I've managed to keep it for 40 years now (though I'll certainly admit it was shorter for the first 15 years or so - not quite long enough for a ponytail). It certainly never comes up in interviews but the industries I've worked with - generally only the unproductive idiots wrung their hands about it. But I'll also note that if I took a job where it actually mattered, like for safety, or perhaps the company has some weirdly strong branding for which shorter hair made sense - I'd cut it. Example: if I took a job in Japan, I'd cut it in a heartbeat if I thought it was going to be a business cultural issue. It all depends on what you want badly enough I suppose.

It usually went like this: Parents: When are you going to cut your hair? Endless Soul: Why would I do that? Parents: Because only bad people grow their hair long Endless Soul: ~points at the picture of Jesus hanging on the wall~ Well Jesus had long hair, and yet you think he's a good guy (I can't believe I actually used the "Jesus had long hair" argument) Parents: Yes...well..that's different! It usually went on and on, with me countering their every argument. I wasn't scoring any points with them, but Niffer always seemed to be snickering in the background.

Shorn hair historically was the mark of a slave, someone not-in-charge, or indentured servant. It was also was used to mean you were a servant of Rome (part of the "uniform").
The corporate dress codes, in general, have no purpose other than to remind you they own you. The company where my wife works - at her location there's no public contact other than voice, yet they have an inane dress code that makes a high school code manual look mature and it changes every few months. I used to dress what I'll call "academic style" at one company (casual jacket, collared shirt, no tie) and the whining that if I'd "just wear a tie" was hilariously pathetic when I'd ace every performance review. "cut your hair and wear a tie because its professional" ... No, professional is working your ass off to get it right on schedule, to go out of your way to protect the company's interests, knowing your needed skill sets, learning a new one at night for use the next day, etc etc. Ever notice how the strictest dress codes are wielded onto the lowest paid employees? The ones who can least afford it?
