Actually their was 1 light novel made called Highschool Of The Dead: Owari No Hi it took place before they left the school what it's about I don't know, I suck at reading all text japanese.

The manga has a total of 7 volumes and the first chapter of volume 8 after a 2 year hiatus will be released this month.

As for the anime it basically covers volume 1 to 4.

No need to worry about scanlation -- Yen is releasing Chapter 30 the same day it appears in Japan. No word on how they're handling it or whether it'll cost money, and it's not clear whether they'll do it for subsequent chapters.

The anime differs from the ending of the manga since it was roughly when the manga went on hiatus. The ova never happened in the manga. Like everything HotD fanservice fanservice.

Regardless if there was one the light novel had little scope of the story compared to the manga.

The anime stayed quite true to the manga. The only real difference with the story of manga and the anime is Studio Madhouse inserted the short temple arc of Takashi and Saeko before they reached the Takagi estate. That arc happened after they fled from the Takagi estate in the manga. The manga went on its second hiatus several months after the anime ended and it was way past where the anime ended. And yes, the OVA didn't happen in the manga and like you said its about fan service.

That one light novel, better yet call it a short story, was just an alternative take on the first chapter of the manga. Slightly different family backgrounds for the characters, Saya ends up on the roof with Rei and Takashi, Saeko does not appear at that point, etc.

Oh come on. Triage X isn't that bad. You can place the blame to the writer Daisuke Satou for this monumental fuck up delay with HOTD. The art Souji Satou can draw the manga anytime but without the writer he can't do anything about it.
