Satoshi Kon (Paprika and Millenium Actress) has died at the age of 47

I was heading to Twitter when I heard this story and it's just really saddens me man.

http://twitter.com/MasaoMaruyama

From what I heard Satoshi Kon was in poverty and may have cancer as well. I'm not even trolling this is from CEO of Madhouse, so If anyone can translate it that would be awesome. It's sad we lost a great man who had a great mind to his works.

God Bless You, Satoshi-Kon sama

I have yet to see a reliable source. Only source is from twitter accounts, that would likely be in Japanese.

Should this be moved to the anime section (since Kon was a well respected animation director)?

Whatever the case, what a loss of a fine artist. Millennium Actress is still my favourite piece of Japanese animation from the past several decades, and Kon is definitely one of my favourite anime directors. My condolences to his family and friends.

edit: merged the [General Forum] thread with the [General Anime] Thread...

R.I.P. to a legend. Satoshi Kon made quality anime films that defied standard conventions. He will be missed.

They are rumors he had cancer and lived in poverty quite awhile. It's really sad, I mean just sad!

WHAT THE FUCK. We just lost one of, if not THE BEST anime film directors in existence. I'm so sad, and speechless about this. We are never going to get another work from him? Fucking ridiculous. Sigh.

Well he definitely left his mark on anime, with some really great works. I agree with James that Millenium Actress is one of the best pieces of animated film in the last decades...

Man. I thought I was supposed to be at least 10-20 years older to start seeing some of my favorite actors/directors/etc. passing away.

I hope so much than it would be a hoax, but it don't look like it is one.

We will be missed.

This is gonna hurt....Kon and Nujabes in the same year...

You see shots of him from a year or two ago - he didn't seem unhealthy or the like. This is one guy I wouldn't have called to die that young...

Anime and humanity has lost a legend, a champion.

And on the question of whether he was in poverty - I can very much believe that. ANN and other places have discussed that most anime directors actually earn less than people working in retail in the West or the like.

Yet despite that he kept the passion and the quality. Which is so rare these days....

Argh, I hear this right before I have to go to work!!! It's gonna be a really freaking sucky day.

Well, I'll give my two favourite Kon quotes.

'The women in anime don't exist in reality'
'The true horrors of the universe come from humanity'

Farewell to the master of the psychological thriller. Another dead hero.
