I'm tempted to add "Homeworld 3" to the list...

But the situation is still too fluid to truely add that in.I'll add it in anyway though.

Have you ever wondered how it would be like to play a game with giant space warships shooting at each other but actually in a Space and not some flat isometric plane like traditional RTSes of the past?Ever wondered what it would be like to see squadrons space fighters zoom in and out,evading fire,soaring and falling between those massive warships in beautiful motions?

Than Homeworld was your game.

Homeworld was released in 1999,and although a good many players may not know of it's existance,the release of this game triggered a revolution in the Real Time Strategy genre.Finally,a game that broke the mold,a game that destroyed the shackles of a birds-eye 2D isometric view and finally allowed you to see up close how a war could be fought.Although such things would have been thought gimmicky,this was not true in Homeworld's case.The game featured it a truely epic,emotional storyline (there are some instances of people nearly moved to tears while going through parts of the game,I kid you not) ,the music was top notch,the graphics were amazing at the time,and would have been considered dated only recently if it's successor had not arrived.Even the music was incredible,featuring none other than the rock band YES singing an unforgettable song that was made for and fit perfectly in the game.The gameplay was very new as well,as this was the first strategy ever to have a fully 3D landscape.You could attack from above,below,to the sides,it was a truely unique experience at it's time.

The game itself ushered in a entirely new subgenre of Real time Strategy games,the 3-D RTS.It can be argued that without a Homeworld there would not have been no Ground Control and it's sequel,no Dawn of War,no Nexus,and no Battle for Middle Earth,at least in thier current forms.This game was played and enjoyed for years by a small yet dedicated community of fans,the likes of which I have never been able to truely find in another game.But than the Sequel arrived.

The sequel,Homeworld 2 was promised to be an evolution of the first,building on the prior game's strengths,while introducing new concepts into the mix.The game itself was good,but it was rushed,a fault that is now contributed to the game's publisher,the now defunct Vivendi Universal.It was better than most games on the market,but it was simply not Homeworld,it seemed to lack something the original had,you could feel it while you played.Most people were disappointed.

However,we were willing to forgive the developers,Relic entertainment,if they redeemed themselves by perhaps offering an expansion pack or even a new installment to the series.However,this was not to be,as we were totally caught off guard by an announcement that Relic had been working on another type of game,this one another 3D RTS set in the Warhammer 40000 universe.We were shown that a large part of the company was made up of many avid gamers.At first we were skeptical,and information was lacking at first,but eventually we were given our glimpses into the game,and we were wowed by it.The game seemed to be a great one,and perhaps capture the spirit that Homeworld 2 had lost.We were certainly pleasantly surprised,along with newcommer 40kers,that the dev staff this time was actually knowledgable of how the game worked,and even had hired the man who did Total Annhilation's music to do Dawn of War's music.However as die hard Homeworld fans,we still hoped that another installment was being worked on even as work continued on Dawn of War,that perhaps another secret project was underway with VU,even as repeated requests and pleas for a second patch were ignored.

We should have known better.

It was May when we found out that publisher who was going to publish Dawn of War,THQ,was now going to BUY Relic entertainment.It was than that we knew that there was now no more hope for a Homeworld 3.But infact,Relic had jumped ship just in time.VU was in serious financial touble,and only 2 months later,VU had effectively stated that it was going to die,and that only games under development than would bear the VU logo when they were relased,and no more.Now the situation is an odd one.Relic cannot develop a Homeworld 3 beacuse it is now a part of a rival publisher to VU,but VU is clearly showing signs that it will kick the bucket soon.Who knows?Maybe,one day,we'll get our Homeworld 3 again.

For now though,we'll have to settle for a spiritual sucessor.

Hahhah, nice on the Homeworld spoiler! However, not sure if it counts as graveyard as a few people still play it (not enough though)!, Starcraft - Brood War. (prefer it without brood war though). That game is still legendary. Its the only game where you actually have to build different units and adapt in order to win the game against your opponent depending on race/unit they building etc. 3 different races which are totally unique from each other in the way they build/mine/fight etc. How can it be better. Graphics were top notch for its release date and it was even the best place to game in terms of servers for its time. Even the Cinematics are comparible to present day ones. Its storyline itself was very original and unique. War 3 maybe have the 'superior' 3D graphics (in my opinion is sucks) but in terms of RTS strategies, SC is the best out of all the ones i have played although TA did rock as well. Can't wait til SC 2 is out if it is anything as good as SC.

How do you play a game that hasn't even been worked on yet?

To state that there's no market for adventure games is like saying there's no market for anime...it may be small, but there IS a market there. I swear...stop thinking about money and get back to your roots LA...you had great games

Of course, let them slap out another lower quality Monkey Island game and have them say that they are commited to the genre...

Another franchise that is now dead is the Command & Conquer series....THANKS EA, YOU ROCK! :fingers:

Hmm... been wondering, are you a Relicnews member? if not join us at www.forums.relicnews.com, we've been discussing if there will be a HW3... and I am sad to say that there's only little hope for the game to exist... anyway...

My hopes are high for Diablo III... but there's a little chance for this game to exist... oh well...

So I'm ahead of ya by a few years

Total Annihilation was a great game (I still play it to this day with some other freaks) and Kingdoms was also good. Secretly I hope that someday someone will anounce that they have been working on TA2 for years now, and that it will come out this year.....Ya right....

Kingdoms was an interesting game. I don't think it sold that well, but it had a different feel than most RTS's, which was nice. The King units and summoning in all your units and the way resourcing worked was quite fun, along with your units (and defensive structures) becoming "gold" as they gained a lot of kills.

A good friend of mine and myself had many a long night squaring off in that game.

Without a doubt, Duke Nukem forever is the laughing stock of the PC gaming industry. Who would have though that the forever in Duke Nukem forever will have such a meaning?
Half life 2 has the potential to become another Duke Nukem forever. My feeling is that after seeing Far Cry which has better graphics than HL2, Valve might have decided to redo the game from scratch the way they did for HL.

Any game that takes more than four years to develop, will have problems(with a few exceptions). When did they start on Duke Nukem Forever? Like 1997? It's been seven years now, and nothing.

There was supposed to have been plans by Interplay to create a sequel to the early pc game, Wasteland. I forgot the title, but Fallout eventually became an unofficial spinoff of Wasteland.

Sega's game designer Yu Suzuki said that the Shenmue series would be a total of seven games long. The second one has been completed, but I doubt they will make it beyond that.
