You mean Haze ^^

About ps2 and ps1 compability,
at the moment current ps3 uses the ps2 EE+GS chip from the slim ps2 (SCPH-7X00X)
to run the games. (note that some ps2 games do not even run on the slim ps2)
Later version will have the chip removed and backwards compability
will run through software emulation.

Pretty much its crysis for next-gen consoles, even doh PC is getting it aswell. Ubisoft is developing the game also, so you know it should be good.

I'm currently miffed at Ubisoft for not supporting Shader Model 2.0 in the PC version of Splinter Cell: Double Agent. Which is really sad, because both Crysis and UT2007 support it, and they look eons ahead of SCDA.

It does look good though, this Haze. Not Crysis level good, but still good.

I like outdoor environments. I hate jungles though.

I'd always wished someone would make a REAL urban shooter. Amidst skyscrapers. Maybe a college campus. Such would be beautiful.

hmm, me always late... ^^

Actually ubisoft is only the publisher, the game and engine are
developed by the monkeys from free radicals design (timesplitters series)

http://www.frd.co.uk

btw:
Apparently ps2 games have a shorter loading time, due to faster dvd drive,
on the ps3 (but only of course if the game works)

Well SCDA was a port of an game originally developed for the Xbox, just touched up for next-gen. Although I thought the game looked fine on my HDTV, but it still could of looked a whole lot better if it was originally developed for next-gen. Good thing SC5 should and will put that to rest

@Sides

thanks for the clear up, didn't know that

A little more detailed article on the compatibility problem: Here.

I still mean to buy a PS3 eventually, but I also took the time to actually look up what I already had.

The website database they referred to that carries the playability status of games is here. It is currently only available on the JP side of the site unfortunately.

What I have seems pretty spotless for now other then some memory card issues. I never meant to let go of my PS2 anyway. lol

This comes as a disappointment for me, but due to the fact that the genre's and brands of games that I enjoy will probably continue to be on Sony consoles, it doesn't really change my expectation that I'll buy one eventually. The thing I would dislike the most is if I had to consider investing in some other console just to play what I like... thats just a waste of cash to me... lol

To me it seems like Sony missed the train. When there are a lot of customers but not enough products, most of these customers will turn to competitors. Nintendo has already announced that they will be able to manufacture about 6 million units right from the start, at a far cheaper price, whereas Sony manages to produce only some hundreds of thousands.

Of course, I'll be happy to have just PS2 for the first time. Good price, can be modded, and a lot of games. Oh, and a rumble-pack too. None of the new consoles have that.

You're just getting one now? Or do you mean that you'll be playing it exclusively?

I'm fairly sure XBox and PS2 both do not support Pixel Shader 3.0.

Really, Ubisoft has no excuse in not supporting SCDA. Well, their excuse is that "PS3.0 is the core of SCDA. We will not support 2.0 for this reason." That's taken almost verbatum. Since when was blur a huge part of a game where you run around in the dark?

@Wordplay: I'm pretty sure XB360 has rumble. And rumble is good for only a few types of games, driving being one of them. Otherwise it's extremely disruptive.

Same problem the 360 was having aswell, with some of the BC Xbox games.
You can't really compare, as the PS3 uses a PS2 chip for backwards compatibility, while the XBox 360 uses software emulation. In this context, the PS3 lets down.

I think the rumble feature is pointless. I never thought it added anything to games.

Well I was trying to make a kind of positive spin on it. They seem to be having some bad press lately, so I tried

Depending on how many games can be played without problems (which I suspect is most of them), PS3 BC still deserves a positive side. The 360's BC list is still pathetic after a year, and it's Microsoft's fault that they delegated so many tasks on the Xbox that hardware emulation wasn't a possibility.

It does puzzle me, though, why this is even a problem. If there's a full PS2 chip in the PS3, why should there be any problem with any games at all?

Simple; a chip doesn't govern everything. There's RAM, processor (which I assume is the chip? no clue here...), GPU, etc. One of the biggest problems in emulation is the graphics processing unit (GPU). The PS2 used an inhouse Sony GPU, I believe, whereas the PS3 GPU is developed by NVidia.

There's obviously a much bigger problem when you look at the XBox's BC. XBox used an NVidia GPU, but the XBox 360 uses an ATI GPU.

Also, regarding pixel shaders... yeah, it's just one of those little graphics things that makes a game look better. In short, it's responsible for high dynamic range (HDR), that cool stuff you see in Half Life 2 Lost Coast and beyond. The thing is, Valve was nice enough to EMULATE PS3.0 AND HDR USING 2.0, for all of us without mid-2006 video cards. Bah.

Regarding PS3 as PC,it may be called "Reasonable"
In fact, the parts in PS3 are expensive and a high-quality.
See,I see it as PC not game.
But,the most plobrem is PS3 is video-game hard.
