I must have watched that scene hundred times back in the day. If the big glowing Vergil standing behind him wasn't enough indication, they were clearly showing their similarities with that line.

Vergil couldn't protect his mother, that's why he wanted power. Nero found himself in a similar situation before with Kyrie.

Oh? That's weird, I don't remember that at all. But yeah, it's weird.
Still, didn't Vergil challenged Mundus at the end of DMC3? Maybe he was trapped in hell and uses Nero as a medium or smth.

Vergil was in DMC1.

But already corrupted/in Nelo Angelo's form. Maybe he's struggling against Mundus's corruption and hence...this link with Nero or whatever (in the end he still lost).
It's wild guess though.

According to the DMC4 Novel (which has a canon story), Nero is Vergil's son. IIRC Vergil visited Fortuna City some time ago prior to DMC3 event, and he had an "affair" with the local whore there....

Nero has lived an isolated life and feared (because of his white hair) before he was picked up by the order.

Dante himself in the novel stated that Nero somehow resembles Vergil. One of the reason why in the end he gave Yamato to him. He also said that Nero's power somehow resonated with him too.

Sorry that I can't cite the source since I forgot where it was (it's a story summary post of someone who bought the novel) and it was already long time ago. Maybe try googling about it?

As for Nero's Devil Trigger, you're correct that it is a projection of himself, not Vergil. It was in a form of floating spirit due to the game being rushed so they haven't completed the DT model.

From this artbook scan, we can see that originally it is intended to have a dark blue-red color scheme similar to Nero's clothing. The light blue shade we see in the game + the incorporated Yamato sheath with the left arm are what made us assume it's Vergil.

I hope in DMC4SE we'll have some story alterations and not just having Vergil running around Nero / Dante's maps

although I'm still fine with the latter.

Fun fact on Nelo Angelo, they did not make any sketches of him and Kamiya and Capcom back in the day only made him directly to 3D.

The demo seems to have Jump Cancelling and fast run already. I hope they stay ever since the beginning of the actual game.
