If you want a taste of Japanese full CGI animation with cel-shaded characters, you can try the two Appleseed movies: Appleseed and its sequel Appleseed: Ex Machina. They’re pretty entertaining sci-fi action. It’s from the author of the popular Ghost in the Shell.

No, I was giving you a complement. I'm saying you're much more understandable now. A year ago when I was more active and paying attention, whenever I read your posts I had to fill in blanks. Now they're much more coherent.

And yes I agree the CG is great in that PV. Not obtrusive at all and honestly looks better than some of the god awful 2D animation studios are putting out. It would really win out if it could stay that consistently good the entire season as well.

Don't worry about that, guys, I'm sorry to misunderstand the replies at first, but I get over it.
My first experience with Japanese CGI animation in television media happened a year ago when I watch an episode of Kingdom and it was pretty okay. But with Arpeggio, I'll definitively watch that once I realised that the animation in the PV looks great, it's a bit sloppy and glossy but still retains the typical anime style and I would be even more excited if the cast is the same as drama CD.

The anime PV is out!!!

The 2D a bit lacking but at least the 3D is better than I expected!

*watches PV*

I-I'm okay with this...

In fact it looks really good, especially in motion. If I hadn't known the characters were 3D it would have been difficult for me to tell at all.

It’s the opposite for me. I can instantly tell that the characters are cel-shaded the moment they move. IMO anyone who have experienced watching cel-shaded characters before will (easily) notice it.

I watched appleseed (all of them), wonderful days and Vexile, still I wouldn't notice that unless it got critised here...

That PV was nice, the "glow" effect of cell shading is still here but it's less noticeable.

You seem to misunderstand something here, my saying “I can easily spot cel-shaded characters when I see them move” isn’t the same with saying “That cel-shaded characters SUXX!”. To put it simply, my previous post above you isn’t a criticism. I simply meant: most cel-shaded characters have some peculiar movements in them which I can easily spot. Arpeggio’s cel-shaded characters themselves aren’t technically bad, that much I know. So, you understand now?

I wonder how they're going to animate this considering the source material is still essentially somewhere in the beginning of the plot line.

Lots of awesome naval battles though which is sorely lacking nowadays.

Heh, you got better perception than I then. This would be my first time watching as cell-shaded show. I think what gives away is the art away more for me, is the odd glow the characters have around them as FRS said.

Yes, I agree. Almost all Cel-shaded characters have peculiar glow and marionette-like motion (like I said some pages back). Those are the things that makes them distinguishable. Cel-shade itself is something between 2D & 3D, for better or worse.

As for myself, I didn't really see it. However, the clip is pretty short, the girls didn't move that much, and my eyes are getting older. I did see a few episodes of Appleseed XIII so I do have an idea of what Obelisk is talking about. I think I'll reserve my judgement until we can see some longer clips.

Even without knowing beforehand how much 3D this show was going to incorporate, the models were blatantly obvious to me. As for the quality... Eh. It's not awful. But it's not amazing, either? I don't know if this is the intended end product, or if a lack of budget is to blame. It reminds me of how I'd expect a bad anime-esque PS1 game to look... or something.

But there's certainly worse out there (some of which has been recently done, too), so I suppose there's something to be said there.

My guess is that Sanzigen Studio can’t do (or doesn’t want to try) 2D animation for various reasons. So they decide to just cel-shade the characters. They’re only known for their 3DCG works after all (no 2D works so far).

I just realised, we don't know it's format yet, do we? It would be far from suprising if it was movie series as Break blade or Appleseed.
