Wonderful episode again. The scenery involving Irisviel and her descent and downfall was disturbing and the final part where she sinks into the darkness, really just drives the point home. Kotomine as well has continued his journey to the point of no return.

Achieving world peace and a non-violent world through some combination of diplomacy and leading more people into freely choosing to adopt a more pacifistic philosophy would be one thing, but achieving that essentially through magic is another thing. As vile a human being as Kirei obviously is, he's right on this particular point. Kiritsugu's desired wish is a real threat to free will, and possibly even our very sense of humanity itself. If this Grail War was going on in the real world, I'd probably be rooting for Kariya/Berserker (if that's still an option; if not, I might have to pinch my nose really hard and root for Kirei of all people). As much as I like Saber and Waver/Rider, the desired wishes of Rider and Kiritsugu might be dangerous for us all.

Granted, that bastard doesn't deserve it and likely will harm some people during his immortal life, but it likely won't have the universal repercussions that Kiritsugu or Saber or Rider's wishes would have (Rider's wish could cause a major war). As for Kirei, I don't really trust the guy (so Zouken's known wish is probably safer for humanity), but at least there's a chance Kirei won't make a harmful (to humanity) wish.

Well, the best wish for him would be that Zouken dies, for good, X years in the past. That way he can attempt to woo Aoi without fearing what Zouken would do to her, or allow her to continue as she has and give Sakura to a less demonic family. Plus, it would save his life.

I couldn't help but laugh at the Kiritsugu and Saber scene. Saber is depressed and doesn't know what to do and Kiritsugu basically just sits there looking sullen while pretty much telling her to F off.
Again though it was Kotomine who stole the episode. His scene with Iri finally seals the Kotomine vs Kiritsugu dynamic in full. As a man who went through a lot of toil to be pious, and an upstanding husband, son, and more, but could not get any joy out of it no matter what he did, there was absolutely no way he'd able to accept someone like Kiritsugu. A person who willingly became like Kotomine, throwing away his happiness and joy in order to pursue an ideal to its fullest. An ideal that is basically unattainable by normal means, a childish dream. Kotomine obviously would feel anger and hatred towards this person who had everything he couldn't have but willingly became like his for such lofty ideals. Now his quest to destroy his dreams in turn begins. Delicious. Can't wait for the showdown of Gil and Rider next episode.

Good news, episode 23 still airs tomorrow. Even I thought that it will be on hiatus because there were no usual previews on Wednesday/Thursday, but finally it released today:
Spoiler for Episode 23:
ufotable said in a recent interview that they had the best team for the Ionion Hetairoi for this episode, so that will be something to look forward for. |
