either way, its just an unknown shinigami...anything else is pure fanbased speculation

Unknown is the only answer you're likely to get about the Shinigami, I don't think there are any hard facts besides what you saw in the episode, interpret as you will.

And yes, Raito is Light. (Think Japanese pronunciation and you'll get it.)

It should be 12 volumes, and one How-To-Read guide. You can double check with Amazon. I believe that it's a total of 108 chapters.

Yes, that's right: 12 volumes of story, volume 13 about the series plus the pilot chapter, and 108 chapters total.

Okay, I just got hooked on the series a couple of days ago, and it wasn't the first episode, so I'm a little confused about who is who. Which one is L? Is he the one that has the dark eyes with the large pupils? And what is the other one's name? The one that in his thoughts(?) is blue? Please be nice on the answer. *-^\\\^-

I will happily answer your questions.

You are correct, L is the man with the big pupils that sits in strange postures and eats a lot of sweets. But do not let the names confuse you as he does have many different aliases (Ryuzaki). The protagonist, and owner of the Death Note, is Light Yagami who is also known as Kira.

When the characters are deep in thought they are often represented by colours, as you stated. Light is usually red, L is blue, Misa is a lighter blue, and Matsuda is yellow.

L(Ryuzaki) = Blue
(I didn't know Misa had a color) It must have been shown very scarcely for me to not remember it.
Matsuda = Yellow

Than Yotsuba member also got the color purple, I forgot his name, though. It was the slick looking one that actually looked like Mikami if he had smoothed out hair.
