I've only seen the first episode, and need to catch up on the most recent two. But, my initial thoughts was this show was more style then substance. That isn't necessarily a deal breaker for me if the characters are at least entertaining, but so far the jury's still out on that verdict.

Shibuta Naoaki directed episode five, his first shot at this role since joining SHAFT. I suspect Simbo Akiyuiki, who is credited as Chief Director, helped his kohei along. This episode was visually stunning at times, and the story goes into a weird place with the Boys+1 fighting to stop the development of a technology with military implications. But overall, I'd say Cloudedmind's early judgement has been confirmed as the show has continued along. Perhaps a surprising comment to make about a NisiOisin story, but I wasn't that impressed with the story in Bakemonogatari and never watched the later ones.

I did eventually catch up, and the problem I have with this show is the same problem I have with many of Nishio's work. The characters talk so much yet say so little.

Well, you won't like this week's episode. Sakaguchi tells this long story about his engagement to young Kodaki, but the scoring of this scene is lovely. Really this episode didn't go anywhere, but again it was nice to look at, and the score is often remarkable.

The scene on the train reminded me of the opening of another detective anime Mouryou no Hako. Perhaps it's a favorite of Simbo's? Like Pretty Boy, there's a lot of talking and not much action for long stretches in Mouryou no Hako.

Sakaguchi holds the painting in a manner similar to the man with the box.The costume Mayumi is wearing is similar to the outfit worn by the girl Atsuko in that show.
