I guess it isn't surprising to find alot of katana love on an anime forum, hehe. My particular favorite would probably be either a Scottish claymore:

Spoiler:

or a flamberge:

Spoiler:

Love those curvy blades, hehe.

Hey, me too!

I love the claymore because it's also really the archetype of the classic scottish warrior: unchivalric and brutal. I don't know if you guys know this, but the guard on the hilt is not only for protection, but if the warrior holds the sword by the blade (obviously only while wearing gauntlets), he can grab the opponent's weapon and throw them off balance. The downside to the claymore, like most longswords, is that they are slow and you can't use a shield while wielding them, potentially losing additional protection from other forms of combat, such as archers (arrows can easily pierce chainmail, which was the standard protection for scottish warriors) or other fast/piercing weapons.

If i remember correctly, marine swords and other such version of them are nothing more for than decorations during events and commemorations, and they have really no value in actual combat, correct?

I have always loved katanas but I would love to have a nodachi, a two handed, longer version of a katana

But having a ninjato would be cool as well, it is a short dagger like sword used by ninjas

yea, the nagimaki was actually another form of the nodachi. if you measure, the nodachi and the nagimaki are pretty close in lengths.

Katana's just the best if you are to spill someone's blood. If a knight in full plate shows up...I'll just laugh and run circles around him until he falls over. XD

All swords currently issued in the US Military are ceremonial swords and aren't authorized for combat use...

...of course, that's why they have Ka-Bars instead!

Spoiler for USMC issue Ka-Bar:

Yeah, I know it's not a sword, but it's a bladed weapon, a combat knife, so it counts in my book...

Some of the most beautiful swords I've seen have all been Viking swords. But when it comes to practical use and the style of swordsfighting that I'm the most comfortable it's the rapier that I prefer. That being said, there are many bautiful rapiers aswell.

I've always been a fan of Soul Calibur.

Sure, it wouldn't be practical at all in real life, but one can dream...

I think I'll stick to my guns...

Spoiler:

But if I had too...
Give me a double-edged short sword, preferably thin, designed not for a straight up fight but for ambushes and quick killing.

Roman Gladius is one of my favorites.
it's not very pretty but it got the job done.
it's partially responsible for much of our culture.
Spoiler for Gladius:

Everybody knows...

The best swords are the ones that are too big for you to swing.

That way, you never have to actually fight someone. I mean seriously, who the hell would attempt to fight a guy carrying a HUGE sword on their back with some small and regular sized affair? I'd get my ass away from the guy toting that around!

Honestly, the love for Katanas and the many katana-like (or katana-esque?) variants is pretty justified. A lot of extremely professional work goes in to the manufacturing of those swords, and to my knowledge they're pretty trustworthy.

To be honest I'd probably be more preferrential to smaller and lighter versions like the Kodachi (... That's right, right?). I'm a wuss, I can't swing around heavy things and expect to cut anything that isn't lower than the tip of a carpet's fabric.

That's a tactic that was used quite often. I mean, who's gonna fight someone with a gigantic sword that's like 5 times the length of a Roman gladius?
Spoiler for like this... scottish claymore:
