That way, you never have to actually fight someone. I mean seriously, who the hell would attempt to fight a guy carrying a HUGE sword on their back with some small and regular sized affair? I'd get my ass away from the guy toting that around!

Yeah see... I wouldn't attack him with a:

Twenty-nine and a half foot Speaaaaaaaar! [Insert Grinch Music Here]

That thing could be made of foam and he'd probably find a way to kill someone with it.

Foam or not IF I see anyone wielding a chunk of iron like that in the battle field I will certainly not stick around to find out.

I wouldn't even shoot him with a beanbag from several yards away!

Sousuke Sagara wouldn't touch that guy! We all know what he did to that chef...

Also the folding techniques used never became as refined as it did in Japan. This is for many reasons.

Also the sheathe made for the sword tended to be metal. The sword was not normally carried on a belt or attached, but normally carried in their hands (although this isn't the case every time) This is because the sheathe itself probably was used to block.

Ancient Koreans though tended to use various spears more than the sword. Infact there are quite a few cool spear designs they have. although now people tend to like the swords more than the spear.
One of my roommates had one of those...or something close to it. We used to take it out into the backyard and throw fruits at each other and chop that shit out of them in the air. Ohhh the good ol' times

I actually started learning how to use a traditional katana, but I think I'd rather use a spear or even that thing that guy from inuYasha had...
(The leader of the Band of Seven) What was it called?

My favorite sword and favorite anime weapon ever is the Eternity Eight. That thing was so awesome. It's my favorite color, has mind control powers, can levitate around you, act as a shield, and you can even step on it like a levitating disk. Oh, and it's a sword too.

I saw several of those when I was visiting some of the castles in japan. Those things are crazy long.

As for mine, It would have to be the Uchigatana, seeing as how I own two and a wakazashi.

Well, if we're talking about tactics, you might be right, but that's assuming the shield wielder can get close enough first. Someone using a shield is probably not going to have a very long reach because it's hard to wield a longsword with just one hand, in general. However, similarly, someone wielding a longsword can't effectively wield a shield any bigger than a buckler because it would obstruct their swings (which tend to be wide, sweeping movements). However, longswords/greatswords could possibly smash right through a shield if it's made out of wood or anything weaker than solid steel. Frankly, in close quarters combat, I'd bet more on the person with longer reach if it's an open battlefield. Now, if it's in a building, the person with a shield + short sword would have the advantage, because the longsword wouldn't be able to get in the wide sweeping swings it needs (I figure stabbing tends to be more difficult, slower, and less practical than slashing for longswords).

I was thinking more on the lines of a typical Roman Legionnaire. (Gladius and rectangular scutum)
