This show is pretty wordy which can turn a lot of viewers off. I'm watching it precisely for that reason.

The scene with Mary and Blood was incredibly sad. Hard not to share a few tears with Will.

That's just freakin' hilarious. Instead of using the idealist "love & bravery" teachings from his mom & dad, Will went straight to Gus' teachings which is: "Shut up & take my money!!". O wise Paladin Will knows that coins solve everything

But seriously though, I like all the negotiation tidbits that Will did in this episode. It makes every interaction interesting and makes me feel like I'm watching Spice & Wolf again or at least it has that vibe.

Now that you mention it it does have that feel.

Knowing that the author is DnD-inspired, I'm always imagining that if I were playing Will how would I approach these situations. Needless to say not nearly as cleverly.

My boy Menel is finally here! A very nice episode, the way Will makes his way through this unfamiliar world he finds himself in is much more natural than most isekai.

Will is really an old school paladin type, but with a bit of a modern twist as you've described. You really don't see characters like that everyday, Ray is the only other similar one from what I've seen of recent anime.

Episode 6 was really good, loving the outside world and seeing how it is along with Will.
Really liked how Will handled his interactions, and aiming for the least conflict, even if he could have solved everything with a show of force. And liked that the "npcs" he met were very reasonable.

Also really liked the constant praying. He really is a wandering paladin after all.

I do like how just about all lf Will's interactions with other people are made into negotiations. From just sharing food to paying off executions, just about every character requires him to keep his wits about him. I also like how they incorporate his praying and chosen faith.

It's quite different from the usual unconditional altruism common to leads of these works (likely coming from shoujo/shounen works). Only other one I can think of who was also cautious was Naofumi of Shield Hero (although there was strong elements of cynicism and calculativeness mixed in due to his sufferings).

Now, as you can probably tell, they adapted the Prologue and First Chapter of Volume Two in this episode and, to keep things moving quickly, they cut out some of the finer details:

The Winter weather as Will traveled made him consider heading back to the city, but he was afraid that if he had waited until Spring he would have probably never left. He would have protected his parent's graves and taken over protecting the High King's Seal for the rest of his life. But that would have been no different than remaining in his room, holing himself up, and basking in his family's gentle tolerance. He had to keep moving.
Will was panicking when he ran into Menel the first time because of the circumstances as he couldn't think of a greeting that wouldn't have a downside. If he approached for a handshake it could have been perceived as hostile, dropping his weapon could be perceived as the beginning of an attack, using a benediction could be perceived as throwing off suspicion of being a follower of a malicious god, etc. It was thanks to Gus' lessons on natural history that he recognized the bow and spoke in Ancient Elven.
Menel being a half-elf is notable because of his ears. They're round like humans and only a little more pointed, but Will noted he had the face of a boy with somehow feminine beauty, paying attention to his elegant chin line and thin lips.
Menel notes that Will's way of talking is rather old despite his apparent age. That's because languages shift over time and he learned to talk from people who have been isolated for two hundred years in the past.
They go into a lot of details about how Will and Menel handle cleaning the boar, from removing the metal fragments of the arrow to prevent someone from eating them to carefully removing the innards to prevent it from spoiling the meat.
Faeries are given a more thorough explanation in the Light Novel as nature's mediators, and thus being able to communicate with them and make use of them were Elementalists (the third school of magic aside from Words and Benediction). Since Elves were created by the God of Fae, Rhea Silvia, they have an easier time doing so and even Half-Elves like Menel are capable.
When Will needs to find the village, he books it through the forest by using the Words of Searching to get a general direction and then took a lot of shortcuts by using things like Feather Fall to get down a steep slope.
The fight between Menel and Will is somewhat expanded. Menel immediately fired three arrows at his face, arm, and leg, and when he saw Will accelerating he used the Slip spell from the gnomes that would have caused him to basically fall down and sprain something given how fast he was moving. Will, as seen in the anime, got around this by using sheer strength to stop the ground hard enough to shake it and stop everyone including Menel, the raiders, and defenders, in their place.
Afterward, as Will approached him, Menel switched from arrows to throwing knives that moved in arc to attack him from the left and right. After he dodged or blocked them with his shield, Menel pulled out a hatchet and attempted a feint by attacking but then calling forth Fire Breath from the lantern behind Will while he has his attention. However, Will noted that compared to how he got tricked by the God of Undeath and even Gus and Blood, it was too easy to see through so he stabbed the lantern and snuffed the flame before knocking him out.
The questioning of what to do with the prisoners happened in front of a makeshift shrine to the virtuous gods made from irregular stones the villagers found while cultivating the fields and didn't know what to do with them.
The name of the Villager who talked to Will was John. The name of the Elder was Tom. Tom was smart enough to pick up that when Will made a vow on Gracefeel to protect everyone here it applied to the prisoners in the event they had a good reason for attacking them and things got heated again, which was part of why he questioned them so that they didn't appear to be hiding anything from Will.
Menel wasn't at the village when it was attacked. He was tracking the boar when he came across the aftermath, hunted it down so their immediate need for food was satisfied, and then came up with the idea to attack the village because while he didn't live there (he's independent and goes to numerous villages), he felt like he owed it to Marple.
Will summarizes the situation being unfortunate all around, as he acknowledged that the village couldn't take them in as refugees if they approached peacefully and both sides understood that it would have turned to violence to survive. None of them were happy about it, they were neighbors after all, but they had neither the method nor resources for anything other than violence.
When Will makes his proclamation about his intention to Gracefeel, he plays a little trick by calling up a small miracle to light a flame at the shrine to the virtuous gods to remind them that she exists and in doing so aided in averting the crisis. It was a bit much but got the job done and all he lost was a little gold.
Will used Close Wound and Cure Illness to treat the survivors who were worse off and got the village to look after them until he retook their village. It wasn't ideal since it was dependent on him not dying, but it was still better than nothing.
Part of the reason Will brushed off the attempted murder was that he acknowledged while he could say that any sin is a sin and they had the option of lying down and dying without hurting anyone, stealing to survive was far more natural, more so when they had something to protect, and he doesn't like passing judgment on a normal person making a normal decision.
The reason that the villagers may have become undead was due to Stagnate's benevolent protection. You see, Stagnate rarely comes down to make a contract as he did with Gus and the others. The nature of the gods meant that they have passive protections from both virtuous gods and Stagnate, so if someone dies with lingering regrets they can rise again. Will can send them and wandering souls off to samsara via Divine Torch, but he has to find them first.

He does exactly what I do, in PAthfinder, namely at least trying to save as many as possible... Usually bringing me close to the point where I'm about to loose the necessary alignment for Paladin Powers. :P

Looked at the author's Syosetu activity report; they admitted they were diagnosed with anxiety, are still on anti-anxiety medication and that it has affected their capability to face and write out Paladin's manuscript.

Well, this episode boils down to good heart-to-heart dialogues between characters.

It's also sad to see people turning into ghost & undead coz they still have attachment to this world.......until Will came and sent them to the reincarnation cycle. But I wonder... in cases such as this, did Stagnate actively turn them into undeads or is it something more collateral due to demon attacks?

Menel was still on guard, but he warmed up to Will, due to just how devout and sincere he is in his every day mannerism and gestures.

mindless undead skeletons, or clearly suffering bodies, sending them off makes sense.

But what about the village elder who became a high rank ghost with her ego intact? Like other than following the cycle according to gracefeel, is there any harm in her just hanging around the village if she wanted to?

Maybe its something like in And on Sunday God abandoned the world (Or however it was actually called) where undead just became greedy as hell. Would kinda fit, since thaat was also the reason Bloodymary didn't want to stay...

The dialogues seemed to imply the possibility that with time she might lose her mind and become a malevolent spirit. Anyway, from what we have seen so far not being part of the cycle of reincarnation is considered a bad outcome so I guess Marple herself didn't want to stay in the world as a ghost.

I'm a sucker for paladins and warriors of faith (partly because holy avenger OP) and I definitely like this. A pity the author has been unwell for quite a while. Hope this story doesn't end up without an ending and the author recovers well. *sad*
