And I like both of them!

Besides, the "older" Robotech 'heathens' probably already know about the Macross universe since I'm sure that they were curious where the original footage came from... (and more than likely own both Robotech and Macross DVDs)

As much as I understand the Robotech/Macross Hatered.

You have to admit, that Macross will probably never get license in the US because of Robotech, and as such, we will never see Macross as Macross in America. Which means it will never get licensed.

We never denied it.

Hence the valid Robotech hate.

Don't say so too soon. Things might change. With Macross going as is, who knows when the production companies of Macross would team up together and drop the hammer on HG, which they could, and win.

Just for the shits & giggles, let's consider a happy ending scenario vis a vis Robotech / Macross.

For the sake of argument, I'll put it this way, Macross is the true Robotech.

What I mean by that is, I had vivid recollections of the SDF portion of Robotech, fond but vague memories of the Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross section, and very hazy memories of the Genesis Climber section being kind of bad, annoying, and generally less interesting. (the transvestite lounge singer? the extremely annoying red-haired girl? ugh) I think that'd be true of most non-anime fans who grew up with Robotech as that one, different, supercool cartoon. If you showed them the SDF Macross with english overdubs, they'd just say, awesome! That's the supercool show I used to watch as a child! Memories of the other two would be less clear and less fond.

So... to most, Robotech is simply the English word for Macross. They don't know or care about Shadow Chronicles. They will say "WTF is this MACROSS???" (but what they really love IS Macross!) If you like, you can embark upon an education campaign regarding the licensing, the splicing and dicing, copywrights, lawsuits, the macross universe vs the robotech universe, the sub-universes, etc etc. By then they will think of you as the comic store guy in the Simpsons and have walked away.

So... my most realistic unrealistic happy ending for the Robotech/Macross conflict is: Warner Bros buys up or negotiates all rights. Robotech is killed dead, dead, deader than Elvis. Macross is then marketed, true to Macross canon, but under the Robotech brand name and using old Robotech terms and names whenever it will not harm the characterization, plot line, etc. Macross is now released in the states using the name Robotech, maybe they redo the original series staying TRUE to the original series with updated graphics as a Saturday morning or after-school cartoon. With that established, the hounds are released and all the various Macross products and shows are released to the US.

Now, consider that Warner Bros is going to do a movie that sticks to the original SDF Macross. If it is successful, then they are at a crossroads. There are clearly two different storylines and products extending away from that original movie... the Robotech line, and the Macross line. Which one is the superior product? Exactly. Macross is clearly, vastly superior. So at that moment, after the first Robotech movie has been successful, but before a sequel is in the works, there will be a strong motivation for Warner Bros to throw their weight around, buy up whatever rights need to be bought, and bring in Macross.

Dunno Wildstar this is where the whole Intellectual Property rights gets into the picture.

The original storyline, mecha designs and characters has been ruled as property of Big West and Studio Nue.

Harmony Gold can't redo a Macross storyline movie without getting lawsuits on their asses.

Ergo either Warner Bros pays Big West and Studio Nue their due or stop the production due to the legal mess.

If they do yet another "backward compatible" loose intepretation of the events of SDFM like DYRL, while avoiding straying too close to DYRL's script they might avoid legal problems. It's not like it's possible to adapt the original screenplay into movie size anyway. I don't think that basic plot premises can be copyrighted.

(Disney in particular is infamous for doing this, Tezuka's Kimba the White Lion -> The Lion King, Gainax's Secret of Blue Water -> Atlantis).

Hollywood being hollywood, character and mecha designs will almost certainly be altered beyond recognition (like the Transformers movie).

And most of the character names have already been conveniently changed to protect the guilty. Although the character "Lin Minmei" may be a problem.

If HG redefines the Robotech movie for use in referencing their canon backstory and characters, and relinquishes their baseless claim to the Macross trademark once and for all, it may even be in BW's interests to let the movie fly. They're banking on MOSPEADA/Shadow Chronicles for the Robotech franchise anyway. But somehow I doubt that will happen. Also, reinventing the backstory YET again is likely to piss off their already diminishing fanbase.

It didn't stop anybody making lawsuit though.

For example George Lucas made a lawsuit on the original creators of Battlestar Galactica during its run.

It being close to his pet Star Wars. Now the irony is his company ILM was also the FX guys of BSG.

The producers of Robotech chopped the three series apart then pieced them back together in a way that allowed them to make a 'new' longer series out of them so they could achieve syndication.

To watch Macross in chronological order follow the list below:
  1. Super Dimensional Fortress Macross (TV)
  2. Macross Zero (OVA)
  3. Super Dimensional Fortress Macross - Flash Back 2012 (OVA)
  4. Super Dimensional Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? (Movie)
  5. Macross Plus (OVA/Movie)
  6. Macross 7 (TV)
  7. Macross 7: The Galaxy's Calling Me! (Movie)
  8. Macross Dynamite 7 (OVA)
  9. Super Dimensional Fortress Macross II: Lovers Again (OVA - Released in US as Movie)
Macross II isn't part of the official canon.

While that is true, its original producers did consider MII to be in the canon.

Then again, thats why you watch it last.

Although I'd place ZERO before Macross: SDF, but I guess visually, you'd want to watch SDF first.

At least not yet anyway. Give them time...they'll make it fit.

I have no problem with Robotech.

Captain Harlock and the Queen of a 1,000 Years....that's a different story....

Highly doubt it. Kawamori was not involved in II, and he doesn't like II one bit.

It has been considered a parallel development by official sources as well. Moreover, rumors would suggest that Kawamori himself has plans for that specific timeline...

Well to me Macross II is based on the DYRL timeline.

And the PC Engine games Macross 2036 and Macross Eternal Love Song are between them.

Quote:

2009~2010 Do You Remember Love Game and Movie

2010 ~ 2036
- During this period, several Zentradi fleets attack, but they're repelled by the UN Spacy forces lead by Commander Britai, as well as by the shock caused by the the Minmay Attack. Development of the VF-1R Valkyrie equipped with the SP-II Super Pack.

2014
- Launch of the interstellar emigration ship SDF-2 Megaroad, escorted by VF-4 fighters.

2018
- Lott Sheen born.

2019
- Komilia Maria Jenius born.

2032
- Dr H. Tachikahof passes away. He was the father of the VF-1 and VF-1R series.

2036: The Super Dimension Fortress Macross 2036
- Maria Jenius and Lott Sheen underwent pilot training under Britai's supervision. Just before their graduation, a Zentradi fleet unaffected by the Minmay Attack invades the Solar System and engages the UN Spacy fleet.
- Maria, Lott and the others cadets are allowed to fight in the light of the crisis.
- Maria battles and defeats Quamzin Kravshera and his underlings Jinna and Grimzo. The infamous trio manage to survive and to flee.
- The UN Spacy fleet defeats the so-called Neld Fleet
- Maria Jenius and Lott Sheen promoted to the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Maria becomes commander of the Red Horns Squadron.

2037: The Super Dimension Fortress Macross ~ Eternal Love Song
- Earth is under attack of the Zentradi Burado Fleet and of the Meltrandi Mokurendis Fleet. After an initial retreat, the UN Spacy launches a counterattack spear-headed by the Prometheus 2 taskforce.
- The Meltrandi Mokurendis Fleet withdraws.
- Meltrandi ace pilot Misty Klaus joins the UN Spacy with the rank of 2nd Lieutnenant
- UN Spacy cadet Kiryű Hayato is promoted to the rank of Major, and appointed CAG of the Prometheus 2 ship.
- Introduction of the VF-4 Siren, the "super" variant VF-4SP, and the funnels-equipped VF-4ST.
- The UN Spacy main fleet and the Prometheus 2 launch a combined attack on the Burado Fleet. The UN Spacy launches the Minmay Attack (Ai oboete imasu ka) and defeats the Burado Fleet.

2040s
Earth enjoys a relative peace.

2050s
Development of civilian-use Valkyries (the so-called VC series) begins.

2051
Development of the VC-51.

May 2054
- The Macross-class interstellar emigration ship "Million Star" is attacked by Zentradi rogues while cruising at 1.8 light-years from Earth.
- To defend itself, mankind establish a defensive perimeter at Pluto's orbit. The Britai Fleet and the Minmay Attack plays a key role in this defensive perimeter.

December 2054
- The Zentradi rogues enter the defensive perimeter. The UN Spacy repels the invaders but suffers terrible losses.
- The Britai Fleet is decimated (both men and equipment) .
- The UN Spacy captures a Zentradi factory satellite.

2060s
- Development of the VF-XX series begins.

2072
- Roll-out of the first VF-2 series fighter.

2079
- Development of the VC-079.

2081
- Development of the VF-2SS (space-use variant of the VF-2 series)

2082
- A Zentradi fleet attacks Earth. The VF-2SS takes part to actual combat.

2086
- Development of the VF-2JA (atmosphere-use variant of the VF-2 series)

And then Macross II...
The series 80 years after the Space War One so probably 2089~2092. In the first episode, Sylvie says the latest Zentradi attack took place 10 years ago. If it's the 2082 invasion, then it would put Macross II around 2091~2092.
The Shoji Kawamori/Studio Nue timeline

Macross Zero -2008

SDF Macross - 2009~2012

Macross The Lost Two Years/Classic/Perfect Memory- 2010

Macross Flashback - 2012

Macross M3 Game - 2014~2030

Macross DYRL shown in theaters -2031

Macross Plus- 2040

Macross 7/Macross 7 Encore/ Macross 7 Trash - 2045~2046

Macross Dynamite 7/Mylene Beat/ Macross VF-X game/ Macross Generation Drama Album - 2047

Macross VF-X2 - 2051

Macross Frontier - 2059

Well u don't really have to hate robotech since they are presented without their own will
HG is the one to blame for the greed they have

And shadow chronicles are as good as transmorphers in terms of gfx IMHO, no where near the quality of the new Macross TV series let alone the movie they are doing now
